Great job Kris. I'm really glad you like what you're doing.

Interesting to see some pics of the New Territories, as we haven't really seen that area except on buses/light-rail. Sounds like it was a successful trip (shoes!), especially the quick border crossing. :)

This "Real China" has nothing on Bao'an! Come check out our village and your idea of real China in Shenzhen will be drastically changed. :)

yes and no
There are 2 real Chinas: the city and the country. This is the city version. I've already shown many photos of the country when I went to Yunnan and Sichuan last summer.

REAL China
The real-real China isn't in the cities but in the countryside where some 60% of the people still live, pretty much unchanged from centuries ago. We saw many peasants on subsistence farms along the Yangtze River when we were there a year ago.

'It was like talking to lettuce.' by far my favorite line of the month. LOVE IT. :) happy trails! we're just back from Cambodia and Thailand too so I can feel your pain (though we opted for the pricey FLIGHT between Siem Reap and Bangkok). but look at the fun that we missed. ;)

Viva-Mexican restaurant
LOVE that place. All of our friends went there while in Siem Reap. It was a must and so cheap, great fun.

Kbal Spean
There was a huge waterfall at Kbal Spean when we were there in November and most of the carvings were covered in a stream, it must be the difference in Wet and Dry season. The huge waterfall was a little bit of a walk away from most of the carvings though through some rocks.

Hey, I visited Koh Samet in April 2006 and found it a great place. The beach was amazing and the sea is so warm and lush - I stayed in the south beach and stayed for 2 nights. The prawns there are MASSIVE too..... God thinking about it is making me jealous. Hope you had fun.

Waiguoren
I don't mind "waiguoren" as much as I mind "laowai" - especially when it's being screamed at me at top volume over and over by a rural woman who the Chinese teachers assured me was crazy. I'll take "waiguoren" over that.

You seem to like tea. The dragon well tea of Hangzhou is very famous. But it's winter now, otherwise you can see how the famers make tea by hand in the mountain villiage close to West Lake. Other than west lake, be sure to visit Lingyin temple, which is one of most famous temples in China.

Nice to feel at home
Kris that is so nice that your school actually cares about you feeling at home for Christmas. I was told Merry Christmas by our contact teacher and one other teacher out of the 200 plus teachers at our school. Pete was even asked to teach his class on Christmas Day and the classes that occurred while we were on our way to the party at Silver Lake. Long Cheng Senior High doesn't really know how to deal with foreign teachers.

Bravo!!! Way to go, Kris!!
Great story! Congratulation on your Chinese language success! We only wish that Starbucks offered these dark cherry mochas in the US.

pasting
Many envelopes are also require paste. And it's not a plastic wand to smear the paste, but an actual (sticky!) brush.
