Our last night was plagued by thunder and lightening so the planned pleasant stroll in the Saturday Market nearby and breakfast at Winterfelt was not looking promising. And it wasn’t. The cafe wasn’t open and the rain barely allowed time for a quick look, buy some supplies at a bakery for the train ride to Dusseldorf and have breakfast at a popular cafe that took your order at the counter and then the waitress came empty handed to the table to tell us it was ready to pick up. It was obviously popular because the coffee and food were good; there was no service. The public transport in Berlin is very organised and efficient. We had been on and off trains and buses many times and never waited more than 4 minutes for a connection. A ... read more

It’s dificult to pigeon-hole Berlin, as it is a diverse mix of old and new, is very multicultural and heavily steeped in history. We bought daily transport passes and changed from buses to trams to trains very regularly. The main points of interest are quite spread out and there doesn’t seem to be the congestion that we experienced in Budapest. Obviously, due to its part in WW2 and the destruction of most of Berlin in 1945, the buildings are relatively recent and many are reproductions of what stood there before. It makes for an interesting mix of socialist modernist styles, Soviet architecture in the East and newer buildings highlighting modern Germany and its place in the modern world. You can’t visit Berlin without commenting on its role in WW2 and the Holocaust but I think it ... read more

I wake up this morning to birds. Early light and twitter stream through the small window that overlooks a cared for garden surrounded by walls of vines waiting for the warm cover of spring. The largest tree towers over our 3rd floor room and small birds busily swap branches, then swap again, as a cold breeze drifts into our room. It’s 6.30am. I am also an early bird. Last night we visited the Brandenburg Gate, the Deutscher Bundestag, the Germany’s Parliament, and followed the path of the Berlin Wall which has the original site outlined by a double row of cobbled pavers faithfully tracing the route, often disappearing into the wall of a building only to reappear further along the way. It’s always been foremost in my mind that the places we visit have a deeper ... read more

Today we revisit the Central Market when the doors are open. We have been there before but it’s worth a return visit and is the cheapest place, with the greatest range, to buy traditional linen and crocheted articles in Budapest. Taking the escalator to the first floor, you realise how large the market is. In 1896, 5 markets were opened simultaneously in Budapest. Four of these markets supplied their local area, whereas the Central Market No1 was designed to supply a greater range of goods for the Budapest region. It covers 10,400 square metres indoors and its location was chosen due to its proximity to road, rail and river transport. There was a 120 meter tunnel joining the Market to the Danube to facilitate the easy movement of goods from boats. The ground floor is dedicated ... read more

It was a busy day on public transport today; trams and buses zigzagging across Budapest for Natalia’s last day here. The Ruin Bar, where we were meant to go last night but it was too busy, was abuzz with activity. It turns out it operates a very eclectic market of food, artisan produce, and home grown arts and clothes, before morphing into a very popular target at night. All the inviting colours and smells of the cheeses, salamis of all sizes, shapes and origins, combine with the ‘Free Bread’ stall to compile a visual sandwich that has your mouth drooling; and it’s calorie free. It turned out the bread was gluten free, not really free. It’s a little intimidating at first as there’s so much random looking paraphernalia suspended from the ceiling, and various oddities wired, ... read more

Breakfast was on the house today and it was the full blown sausages, bacon, eggs, various cheeses, cereals, 3 types of bread, salads etc. etc, and juice, tea and coffee; just as they like it in Europe. After eating Chimney Cake late last night I was still coming down from a sugar overdose, so breakfast wasn’t high on my priorities . It’s a Hungarian specialty consisting of sweet dough, rolled into a coil, wrapped around a wooden spindle and rotisseried until golden brown. It’s then coated in butter and sugary flavours and served hot. My favourite is cinnamon sugar but it’s a treat to eat sparingly. It’s basically sugar. Stepping from the sanctuary of our appartment into the slowly waking lane dividing Gozsdu Court, I am suddenly in the world of early morning market stalls setting ... read more

Approaching the station by tram I couldn’t help but notice very few people about; strange for 8.40 on a weekday. Surely the Slovaks hadn’t gone on strike in solidarity with their European neighbors, the French. No, it soon became evident that the wind howling down from the blue icy sky had driven all the police, vagrants, touts and smokers into the main station to avoid becoming ice sculptures. It had become a demographic microcosm of everything Bratislava had to offer. Normally the authorities have little tolerance for any activity initiated by the disadvantagged on the streets (ie begging) but I don’t think they had the heart to send anyone back out into the cold. The folk of Bratislava had been deceived by the weather gods; yesterday’s golden warm sun had abandoned Bratislava, with rain predicted for ... read more

Bratislava is a jumble of elegance, style, history dating back thousands of years, and happiness, all wrapped up with welcoming friendliness that is too often missing. I came to Bratislava on a suggestion from Tim and was prepared for an interesting stopover on the way to a desired destination. After two and a half days of turning up tiny laneways, visiting majestic churches, traipsing over castle grounds that date back thousands of years, I’ve come to realise that this should be a quiet priority on any Eastern European itinerary. It may not have the high reputation bestowed upon Vienna, Prague or Budapest, but it sits proudly on the Danube and compares favourably with these cities. As you pass by stately, sometimes neglected, buildings, plaques stop you in your tracks to announce that Napoleon signed the Treaty ... read more

Today I struck up a conversation with 3 young Germans from Berlin. Just 18 years old and recent high school graduates, 2 of these men have opted out of normal society for 10 months, determined to find their place in this world. Their trip is called Lost In The World and can be followed online. Their other option was backpacking in Australia but they concluded “everybody does that.” Their goal is to ride to Tokyo, heading towards Vietnam before turning left into China and onward to Japan. Think of what you were doing at 18; i challenge you to match this. In 2016 I met two 25 year old Koreans in Spain, who had ridden 20000 kms from Seoul , and like the Germans, carried 40 kilograms on each bike. They said their experiences and adventures ... read more

. Our taxi to the airport today was a mix of Uber and the guy next door with a car we can rent. It was a little old corolla type of car with half the boot taken up by an LPG bottle. I’m pleased to report that he has the same sense of pride in his car and makes sure it is washed at least once a year. The case had to sit in the front with the driver and 3 of us squeezed into the back. I didn’t even bother with the seatbelt. The upside was that he knew the way, took a few risks to get us into the traffic, and he only cost about $5. He had a very good tip because where were going zloty are of no use. , We are ... read more
