Well, they were all great suggestions but they are closed on Mondays. Picasso Museum, closed but had an interesting door with an interesting sign. Le Marche Des Enfants Rouges, oldest covered market in Paris city since 1628, closed, as were many adjoining shops. Regardless, Le Marais is simply an intriguing district to visit. It has many parks and playgrounds dedicated to whoever; important locals I guess, and a very eclectic range of buildings, restaurants and shops, winding their way through small lanes and busy boulevards. Wandering these areas of Paris, I often consider that, if it wasn’t for Hitler‘s arrogant view that soon it would all be his, this historic, cultural part of the world would probably have been destroyed in his quest for dominance. Today was very cold again, with snow still evident well into ... read more

There’s one on every trip. Some clown holding up everyone at Border Security because they don’t pack properly. First it was the pair of scissors in the carry on luggage; the bag has to pass through again. Then it was the gaffer tape ( apparently a potential restraint device) , removed; the bag had to go through again! That’s a lot of peeved passengers, so I suppose I should be grateful they weren’t on my flight, as I no longer had tape to bind them up with before unleashing hell with my little kiddie type scissors. International flights are so boring but there’s no avoiding them. On my 14 hour leg today, part of 25 overall, the irritation knob was turned up to 11, (Spinal Tap reference), by an inconsiderate Frenchman who thought it was acceptable ... read more

A little over a week ago I was following yellow arrows in Spain, on the Camino, which was far removed from yesterday, when I was following black arrows in Richmond, in Ikea. Following the black arrows was far more tiring ! Back to the real world. I'm now looking into the Portuguese Camino for 2018. If you're interested in the Camino, give me a call and I might be able to help you avoid the mistakes I made on this one. Bye.... read more

Little to write about today. I had an early breakfast, an early shower, and an earlier last check and pack up. I'd hate to be on the plane and realise that something I wanted was in my pack. On the other hand, I can't fit much in my small pack. Being a master procrastinator, this took some time and a few double checks. After breakfast I went for my usual nice coffee at my usual nice shop. I can't do that tomorrow and the realisation sets in; this is it. It's 9am and I'm on coffee 3 at my wifi cafe where I will be joined by Ken, John, and Mike, Ken's friend. We had dinner last night and Mike is a top guy; very funny with very Scottish views, most of which I agree with. My ... read more

Yesterday 569 people arrived in Santiago. Whether it's by foot, bicycle, pulling a trolley, or on a guided walking tour, that's a lot of people. Of course there are also many directions to approach it from as well, but the Francés Camino is by far the more popular way. A pilgrimage is meant to be a way of renewal in a spiritual or religious sense but these days it is much more than that. People often face their 'demons' along the Way.People spend long periods walking alone, and unless your tuned into music or absorbed by everything around you, you will think and chop and change, and sometimes delve into places that a normal busy life doesn't allow you too. Last night we had dinner with a woman who revealed she cried uncontrollably a few times ... read more

Another quiet day and the weather has changed to very cool and overcast. I went to an early breakfast and left San Martin in search of better internet. The morning was biting into my skin and I regretted going back to shorts today. The bar near the park was the first I found with internet so I bought a coffee and got connected. After doing what I needed to do I chatted to a couple from Boston for about an hour. They had walked the Portuguese route and were due to go home. It's interesting for me to learn of others experiences and about the different Ways. Elliott and Deb were retired and did a lot of walking, in spite of Elliott's new knee, and completed the Francés last year. When I left the bar it ... read more

Legal breakfast today and had my room number checked off; obviously looked more legit yesterday. I went shopping and bought some jeans and a shirt. Ken and I crossed paths early and had a coffee and a chat. Lauren and George the German came along, and while Lauren admired my purchases, George wanted to find a sports store. He thinks when he sweats his bright green pants look like he urinated in them; sweat, yeah , right George. Ken was going to mass so I visited a few of the tourist shops and saw the same stuff in every one. It's 6pm and I'm back from the park above the old town. As I looked across at the Cathedral and surrounding buildings, I realised this is fast coming to an end. It's so peaceful, so removed ... read more

After sleeping pretty well, I was up at 6.20am preparing for the bus. I left the room at 6.45, John was still in bed, so I made sure he was awake and went downstairs to make some calls. When I arrived at the bus stop there was one Canadian guy there, who was also determined not to miss that bus. I went to a bar down the road and bought a coffee and cake for breakfast, and I hope that will be the last time I eat cake for breakfast. A crowd gathered at the stop, all with backpacks or other luggage and the bus was on time, loaded up, and we were gone. I'm not sure when I'll be back at Muxia but I'll never say never. The normal routine for queuing in Spain is ... read more

I had a terrible sleep last night. Nightclub Titanic across the road was full bore until 5am in the morning, with yelling and fights outside. Combine that with John's midnight return with 15 minutes of organising himself and it was never going to be restful. We met Ken at 7am at a cafe for breakfast ( where the Titanic crew had congregated), and were on the road by 7.30. We walked on roads uphill for about 30 minutes before entering natural tracks and cool, moist smelling forests of eucalyptus trees and ferns. The paths were good but it was a long climb out of Finisterre before it levelled out to undulating paths. At one stage I was walking along a potpourri of pines on one side and eucalyptus on the other, with the ferny undergrowth cooling ... read more

Started walking before dawn, alone. The steep walk out of Cee was rewarded with a beautiful sunrise, the lights of Cee over the harbour, and peaceful meditative walking. I had a coffee and cake for breakfast before leaving town so light was improving and I only needed the torch to negotiate a dark, narrow, challenging rocky path on the edge of town. Otherwise it was all well illuminated. Not much to say today; great tracks, lovely surprises around every corner, and a great end to the day. I had chiperones and potatoes for lunch on the seaside with Ken, John and Lauren and planned to meet to walk to the Cape for sunset. Somewhere wires were crossed and Ken and l walked out independently but the others weren't sighted. Unfortunately, neither was the sunset. It was ... read more
