Well, its been a little while since I've had a chance to log on and bore you all with another installment of what I've been up to - so sit back and relax, this could take a while.. It seems like the last couple of weeks have absolutely flown by. Our wonderful Contiki tour manager Matt did mention that 16 days would go by quite qickly, and he wasn't kidding! We finished our Contiki tour yesterday - I would never have thought that I'd actually be disapointed to see London, but I've had so much fun I really didn't want the tour to end. Although, its probably a good thing that we didnt go for too much longer - good to end while most people were all still on friendly terms! I'm having trouble remembering exactly ... read more

Well, not really 'flooded' I guess, it's more of a drizzle - the first rain we've had so far so I suppose we can't complain. After our guided tour of the city Emma and I have sought refuge in an internet cafe in an attempt to remain dry until we meet up with our tour manager guy again. Florence is kinda cool - now we know where the ninja turtles come from (Donatello, Rapael etc). More importantly however, it's EASTER today, and you would not believe the size of the egg we got. Our lovely tour manager and his side kick driver aquired a 3kg which they passed around the bus for us to share. Mmmm, chocolate. Unfortuately for me, it was dark chocolate - but hey, it was a good idea. We're still in recovery ... read more

Europe » Switzerland March 22nd 2005

This has got to be my favourite place so far, in fact if the 'z' and 'y' were in the right places on the keyboard I'd be happy to live here. Firstly the chocolate is INCREDIBLE - it really does melt in your mouth. Oh, and the whole Swiss alps thing is kinda cool too.... Actually it was pretty amazing to wake up this morning to see the sun hitting the snow covered slopes of the Alps, absolutely amazing - I don't think you'll ever be able to convince me something like that can just occur by chance! After wandering around in Lucerne yesterday, and then half freezing to death on a lake cruise we arrived at this village in the Alps to a really really nice hotel with an unbeatable view (I promise I will ... read more

Europe » Germany March 20th 2005

Today we left Amsterdam and ventured into the German countryside - man, there are castles everywhere there! We only had a little bit of time in Germany, but we did get to do a cruise on the Rhein river which was really cool - all the little villages on the banks looked so German (yes, I know that sounds obvious, but they did!) We spend the night in a small town called St Goar which seemed very touristy - I get the impression they make a lot of money from tour groups like us! Pretty cool place though.... read more

Ok, now Mum - I don't want you to panic.... :-) Today's been a huge day - we were all up bright and early this morning to head off on a bicycle ride through the village of Edam (just outside Amsterdam). Thankfully the entire country is quite flat so the ride wasn't too taxing - although a fairly large group of us did manage to get lost for a little while... After that it was off to see how cheese and clogs are made, and most importantly, sample some of the local cheeses (mmm, I LOVE Edam cheese). Soon after we were dropped in the city of Amsterdam to fend for ourselves for the day. We'd already had a bit of a glimpse of the place last night when we went on a canal cruise and ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London March 17th 2005

Well, I'm sure you all (except maybe Andrew, judging by his comment...) will be pleased to know that we arrived safely in London at about lunchtime yesterday. The landing part of the flight was really really cool - London is absolutely huge! Yes, I know that's probably rather an obvious statement, but the enormity of it really hits you from the air. From Heathrow we had to find our way to the Royal National hotel where we are staying, a seemingly simple task... which in the end turned into a bit of an 'adventure'. It turns out that the train loop that runs between the terminals at Heathrow is being upgraded, so we had to get a bus from the terminal to the nearest train staion - that was easy enough. From there we lugged suitcases ... read more

We're working on the theory that if we don't sleep until its night time in London, then we won't get jet lag. If this theory is wrong - dont tell us, we dont want to know! Right now we are at Singapore airport and its 3.30am local time. I think thats about 6am Sydney time - Deb, Emma and I haven't slept since whenever we got up yesterday morning, so we are staggering a little and this is taking rather a long time to type. The boys caved in and slept fairly early, but they aren't looking much better. Of course, the scary thing is that the first bit was the short leg of the trip...we can't even remember how long Singapore to London takes, but I can't wait to get on the plane and go ... read more

Well, not long to go now. Unfortunately I seem to have rather a lot left to do... I'm not exactly sure what, I think it mainly involves making decisions about what I do and don't need to pack. Today I figured I'd better bite the bullet - I started the day with every item of clothing I may want to pack laid out on the living room floor and then began the selection process.... The question is - can I fit all the stuff I need into just one backpack? (I'm assuming the answer is yes!) Odin seems keen to be included too...... read more

Ok, so I'm not technically travelling yet - but I thought I'd test out some potential blog sites and see which one I like the most. (Yes, I know I'm a nerd - but you all love me anyway...right?) It looks like its going to be kind of cold - Marg kindly emailed this article to me from the SMH this morning: url=http://www.smh.com.au/news/World/Snap-freeze-temperatures-plummet-in-Europe/2005/03/02/1109700504579.htmlSnap freeze: temperatures plummet in Europe Now, I wonder how I go about inserting a photo?... read more
