Today was pretty hard. For the first time it struck me that actually pretty lonely sometimes being so far away. I really miss being able to spend time with people at home. Not so much because I've been gone so long (its not even a week) but more because it seems like ages until I will be able to see them. I also have a 4 day long weekend ahead of me and I've been kind of wondering how I will fill it since I don't really know anyone here yet. It's not looking quite as grim now though. I have plans with an expat from the UK, Louise, who is going to take me swimming and then shopping tomorrow morning. Maybe I can find a pilates mat somehow. And on Saturday I have a skype ... read more

Today I woke up up to discover that not only do the bats sleep outside my window, but they somehow manage to aim so that their poo ends up inside my room! I'm just very glad that last night they were sleeping a little further down the wall past the end of my bed, so it didn't land on me in my sleep or something. At least being very small bats they leave deposits that are more the size of mice droppings than the mess left by larger bats. Still, not the best start to the day! After operation bat poo cleanup, it was time for language school again. I had no idea when I signed up just how exhausting it would be. The teachers are lovely but because they are one on one lessons it ... read more

Moving in Yesterday afternoon I moved in to my new digs. My accommodation is a bit interesting. It's kind of like a terrace house (a common style here) but the downstairs is actually used as a charity shop. It's run by an NGO that are working with some children out in the villages. So understandably it not an overly luxurious building! Its not bad or anything, it is just a little more basic than I am used to – perhaps just differences between living in Cambodia and in Australia. House friends The first thing that struck me about my new house was not the house itself, but rather the people. I guess because it is really the people who make a house home. I've been lucky to have a string of awesome housemates at home, so ... read more

A snippet from my thoughts on arriving in Cambodia last night: So, here I am in Cambodia, my home for the next two months. The ride from the airport to the house felt familiar, having at least been here once before helps I think. Makes it feel slightly less daunting maybe. It's difficult to describe exactly how it feels. Scary is one word that springs to mind though! It's all a bit overwhelming actually. I'm ashamed that I feel a bit like I want to go home already! Everything seems really hard (will I really ride a bike in that traffic? How exactly will I teach the team here? Am I really going to be useful? I don't know anybody here, I'm going to be so lonely! Two months is such a long time!...) A good ... read more

Today started very well - with a sleep in and a comfy bed. Our first activity for the day, a trip out to the island of Alcatraz, didn't require us to be anywhere until 9am either. Easy. The weather here in San Francisco is actually way cooler than it has been everywhere else. I think this might be the first time in over a week that we've been in temperatures under 40 degrees. Maybe that will help ease us back into the Sydney winter that we return to in just a few days. In the meantime though, I was very glad to have taken my jacket - the winds on the boat out to the island were icy cold! Taking the audio tour around the legendary Alcatraz is pretty interesting. And they have some fun souveniers ... read more

Sadly we have come to the end of the real 'road trip' part of our holiday. Today the RV has to be returned to the folks at El Monte Rentals in Dublin California. Before 11am. Which means that once again we are up and on the road well before I'd normally like to be out of bed. Surprisingly though even after two weeks I'm still doing fine with the early mornings. We actually made it to El Monte early and faced with the choice of waiting an hour for their shuttle, or lugging all our bags on public transport (which would get us to our San Francisco hotel at about the same time) we took the sensible option and decided to relax in their very large waiting room and wait it out. We had the whole ... read more

A long one today, but it was all exciting. If you're a skim reader make sure you don't miss the last bit Does everybody know what day it is today? That's right, its bear day! Or at least I'm hoping it will be. I did see a bear last night on the way in actually, but it was a statue of Yogi Bear. Not quite what I'm looking for. We actually slept in a bit today before Gez, our driver for the day, once again negotiated the very windy roads into the heart of Yosemite National Park. Yosemite is the kind of place where you could easily spend a week or more exploring everything, so we were looking for some inside information on which spots were a 'must see' for our single day in the park. ... read more

Today is another driving day. Driving days are so much more fun in an RV! I think mostly because you can get up, walk around, go to the fridge, accidentally leave the fridge not-quite-latched, go around a corner, watch salad and strawberries fly out of the fridge and across the floor (without it waking Stu or Gerry who are napping nearby) and then clean up the mess with one ply toilet paper. It all just makes the time pass more quickly really. Other than the aforementioned spontaneous explosion of fruit and vegetables from the refridgerator today was actually pretty quiet with only two real points of interest for those playing at home. The first being that Craig and I both had our first turns at being pilot and co-pilot of the massive beast of an RV ... read more

Today is the day that I have been looking forward to for several weeks. Ever since we booked the Canyon River Adventure actually (and not just because it meant there was no danger of us deciding to hike to the bottom of the canyon and back up). As has become the norm, we were up with the sparrows and waiting patiently at the Grand Canyon airport. The Canyon River adventure is a whole day (6am to 6.30pm) trip which starts with a 45 minute scenic flight over the Canyon. Out of all the activities planned for the day, this is the one I was a bit nervous about - having visions of getting into a very small plane, hitting lots of turbulence and me involuntarily leaving my breakfast on the passenger beside me. Thankfully though, even ... read more

At last, the day has arrived. Today we get to pick up our RV and join the hundreds of other tourists making the trek from Vegas to the Grand Canyon. After short training film, a tour of the van, signing about a hundred forms and working out how to take off the park brake, we were on the open road headed for the Grand Canyon. First stop was Hoover Dam. A massive structure which I'm sure warranted more of a look than I gave it, but with it being over 50 degrees celcius outside I was more interested in why the aircon had stopped working in the campervan. Fortunately Gez got it back into action and we able to continue along our way. I must say though, the lady who runs the souvenier shop at Hoover ... read more
