After the very early morning and late night the day before, we'd agreed a sleep in would be a good idea, and that we'd have a sleep in and meet for breakfast at about 8.45am. Things didn't quite go according to plan though - there was a funeral at the neighbouring temple so we awoke at 5.30 to the sound of singing (projected via loud speaker), drums and music. Fortunately it only lasted 30 or so minutes before it stopped.... and then started again 5 minutes later. And so the day began, with everyone on time we enjoyed a nice breakfast at a nearby cafe before heading to P's place to learn a bit about the work she has been doing in Poipet and the issues that face the people living there. I was really struck ... read more

We all clambered onto the bus early in the morning for the 6 hour road trip to Poipet via Persat. F joined us for the trip to Persat to show us a project there for people with disabilities. After a presentation from the project co-ordinator, a Khmer national, who told us about how they had helped villages to set up pre-schools, pig banks, cow banks and rice banks, we jumped back in to the van to visit two of the nearby villages to see how some of the projects worked in practice. When we arrived at the first village we were met by the village chief himself and the leaders of the disability group. Thanks to our earlier language lessons, were were able to return the greetings we received from the people who lined the path ... read more

Yejj Day two in Cambodia, and P had organised for us to visit Jotham at the Yejj training school. Yejj run a number of different types of training programs including some hospitality and some IT training. Obviously I found the IT side of things quite interesting - they do basic Microsoft type training, along with CISCO training (networking stuff for the non-nerds reading this). What I found more interesting was that Yejj also have a web department, which employs nationals who have completed an IT degree. They mostly work with companies in Europe, generally building relationships with IT companies who deal with the end clients and outsource to Yejj Sometimes they do whole websites, sometimes just a component (like a shopping cart etc) I found it quite interesting looking at off-shoring from the point of view ... read more

Monday kicked off with another session of Khmer 101, ably led by P. The hotel staff were most amused as they listened to us revise our greetings, introduce ourselves repeatedly, ask one another whether we had eaten any rice yet, and express our deep gratitude to one another for the valuable gift of Phill & Di's hotel room key that was being passed around. Whilst none of us were quite fluent after these sessions, we've all gotten quite a lot of use out of the key phrases we learned. Kudos to P for lining it all up for us. Equipped with enough Khmer to get ourselves into trouble, and not quite enough to get ourselves out of it, we set out for our first full day in Cambodia. The mood as we boarded the bus was ... read more

After an early start in Australia, napping on the plane, and an incident involving new shoes, suspected dog faeces and me washing footwear in the women's toilets, we arrived at Phnom Penh safely and pretty much on time. Having negotiated the procedure for acquiring visas and navigating our way though customs we all emerged safely from the thoroughly air conditioned airport and stepped out into the warm and rather humid land of Cambodia for the first time, where P and Sokren were waiting to meet us with the mini van that is to be our home away from home for the next couple of weeks. The van seems to come equipped with industrial strength air con, which led me to wonder whether perhaps I'd under packed and might actually need some warmer clothes for the trip! ... read more

Here I am at Heathrow again, its becoming my home away from home! The last few hours of my holiday are slowly ebbing away - I just few in from Cork in Ireland and I'm waiting for my plane home. I get back in to Sydney at about 6 tuesday mornin (i think... whenever QF2 turns up anyway). We worked out this morning that altogether it will be about 29 hours of trave time...doh! I'm sure it won't be too bad though :) I had a fantastic time in Ireland - it was really really good to be able to spend some time with my uncle bill and nora and see their house and meet people and stuff, We went heaps of places too, but I'll write about that later cos as usual I'm almost out ... read more

Well, here I am at Heathrow airport waiting to board my flight to Cork. today was our last day in London - deb, luke, emma and captain cuddles (a.k.a. aaron ) are probably also waiting for their flight home - but they are at a different terminal. We actually go to the airport fairly early, which was good cos th tube was getting pretty crowdd as it was and any later would have made it a real pain to get here. My first stop once I got to my terminal was the bookshop - where I picked up a biography of Catherine de Medici- which is actually really good! (credit goes to tour manger matt and his mini history lessons for making interested in reading it) Today has bee pretty cruisy, we went to Harrods which ... read more

We're in Hastings now, just south of London a bit. The beach here is just fantastic! No sand, just pebbles, but smaller than the once in Nice. I really like it. And the sea is such a nice blue - not the bright blue it was in Nice, more of a steely blue. Anyway, its cool. You should all come over and check it out. Today we had a pretty quiet day - just saw where the battle of Hastings was and walked around the battlefield, listening to the history of it all. Really interesting stuff - history seems much more relevant when you're actually there! Aside from that though, we're pretty much just hanging out here for the evening. Tomorrow we take the car back to Brighton and head into London for a couple of ... read more

Well, at least I think I'm in Southsea - maybe its Seaforth. Eh, either way - I'm somewhere near Portsmouth, (which I think is in Wiltshire - or at least near there). We're staying in a hostel againg tonight - which is good because it means I can get on the Internet and bore you all senseless with what I've been up. The unfortuate part of the story is that there is only ONE room in this place where you are allowed to smoke - the same room where the internet access is. Doh! Ok, now that I've completely confused everyone as to where exactly I am, and complained about the cloud of smoke I'm looking at this screen through, I'll start on the more interesting stuff... We spent a fair while exploring Edinburgh castle - ... read more

Ahh, the pace of the last few days sure has been different to what we've been used to on tour! It's certainly different to having Matt and Nico to babysit us and take us safely from place to place - but lots of fun all the same! The day after our tour finished (so, two days ago) we made our way to Heathrow via the tube (having sucessfully negotiated the Paris metro we are now qualified to handle any metro system in the world, apparently). We had a fairly uneventful flight to Inverness, although I couldn't help but crack up laughing when we landed...and I saw that the airport is surrounded by empty paddocks! It was just such a change from what we've been up to - Rome, Paris, London and then it was like we ... read more
