Geo: 46.5897, -112.021We are not having much luck with the weather up here in the northwest. We spent most of the day under a low ceiling, black billowing monsters in the sky which did prove menacing at times. Check out my photos. And the sky did open up on us for about an hour in the early afternoon. But we didn't allow it to dampen our plans. We had a good day.We left Kalispell, MT at 8:20 AM, 63 degrees and headed for Glacier National Park. It took us about 45 minutes to get to the park entrance. We drove through small towns, one of which is called Flattop, where the billboards say they make Flattop Vodka. I thought, there must be a Flattop Mt. around here somewhere. I guess there is, but given the low ... read more

Geo: 48.2016, -114.315I hope I may be excused for my lack of enthusiasm today. I found it difficult to be inspired by northern Idaho and western Montana. It isn't that it's not beautiful country, because it is, but our route took us through no man's land…perhaps I should call it God's country…and how many ways can you describe pine trees? I think I have done it all several times, already. The first photo will show you that even Beamer got bored. And I have to say, compared to yesterday, being in the snow-covered mountains of Mt. Rainer National Park…well…this just didn't hit a home run for me. It reminded me of the Hainesville Woods in Maine, the one they wrote about in a song. I'm talking about Rt. 2 that starts in Idaho and goes on ... read more

Geo: 46.997, -120.549We left Vancouver this morning at 8:10 AM and 68 degrees and began by retracing the route that had taken us to Vancouver from Seattle. It is the only route…down I-5. We spent about 20 minutes at the boarder stop…again the border agent was surprised to hear we had driven all the way from Florida. Are we nuts? Perhaps. The plan for today was to try and see Mt. Rainer. The forecast was for cloudy skies and snow above 8500 feet. We were not at all optimistic about having a good view, or any view at all, of the mountain, but we decided to take our chances and go for it. For the third day in a row, we drove through the Skagit River Bridge detour. This time I got a photo of the ... read more

Geo: 49.2605, -123.114We made it to Vancouver and no worse for wear. It only took 15 days…and people doubted us. We left Bothell, WA this morning at 8:00 AM, 60 degrees and headed back up I-5. Given our experience yesterday with the Skagit River detour, we were ready to spend an hour in Mt. Vernon. But it didn't happen. We drove right through town, never stopped once for a light, crossed the bridge and were back on I-5 in about 5 minutes. Timing is everything. Where the view of the mountains was clear and bright yesterday, it was not the case today. The many peaks to the east were mere silhouettes in the early morning haze. Mt. Baker was still visible because of its bright snow cover, but still it was dimmed by the white mask ... read more

Geo: 47.6353, -122.302An interesting day it was. Our plan today was to go sightseeing on Puget Sound in the morning then visit Pike Market in the afternoon. We left the hotel at 9 AM, 64 degrees, and headed north on I-5. The first thing I saw when we hit the road was a long chain of mountains to the east, with those now familiar trails of snow bleeding down the sides. Since the sky was blue today and the sun was shining brightly, we could see them clearly in their majestic splendor. I can't explain why, but there is something about mountains that makes my heart skip a beat. Someday, perhaps, I will get to lay my eyes on the big one…Everest. That would be sweet. Soon I spotted a mountain, far off in the distance, ... read more

Geo: 47.6353, -122.302The plan for today was to drive to Seattle, and on the way, take a detour to Mt. Rainer Nation Park. Unfortunately, it was overcast and the ceiling was very low, so any attempt to see a mountain that is over 14,000 ft. would have been fruitless. We decided instead to head to Seattle and let the day tell us what we should do. And it did. We left the hotel in Portland at 9:00 AM, 57 degrees and pointed the Highlander north. And less than five minutes later, we were in Washington State. Washington reminds me of Maine. The grass is green and trees are plentiful…tall spiny pine trees of all kinds, interesting species of oak and birch, and my very favorite, full and shady maple trees. I-5 showed them all to us, ... read more

Geo: 45.5118, -122.676Well I have always pictured the western part of Oregon as cold and rainy and foggy and guess what? It didn't disappoint me. We had just that kind of day…mostly. We left Roseburg at 8:10 AM today, 55 degrees and overcast, and headed for the coast. The original plan was to visit some wineries, but Steve decided he wanted to see the Oregon coastline, so we made a detour. Most of our drive today was the scenic route through the countryside, up the coast, and back through wine country. (Unfortunately we were running late and were very tired, so we drove on past the wineries. Honest!) We began our drive through fertile farm land and grazing land populated with donkeys, mules, horses, cows and sheep. I even saw a black sheep among all of ... read more

Geo: 43.2167, -123.341If yesterday was special, today just blew my socks off. This country never ceases to amaze me. Why didn't they tell us about this in school? We left Medford this morning at 8:00 AM and 50 degrees and headed for Crater Lake National Park. As we set on our way, it was overcast and the mountains were hidden in the clouds. We drove through areas that reminded us of small towns in Maine. Shady Cove has no chain restaurants but rather Mom and Pop businesses like Ma's Restaurant, Pat's Hand Tied Flies (my brother Dick would have had to stop in there for sure), Callie's Pizza and Mac's Diner. We saw a lot of pine trees and maple trees and ranch houses. And even though it is June 12th, the grass has yet to turn ... read more

Geo: 42.3237, -122.89It was a chilly start this morning when we left the hotel at 8:10 AM and headed north toward San Francisco on the PCH. It was overcast and foggy, too. We were going to put on a lot of miles today and I expected it to be rather boring, going up I-5. We opted for the interstate for speed and figured we were probably giving up the scenic route. WRONG. If any of you plan to drive to Oregon from San Francisco, take I-5. You will not be disappointed. We began by driving the 20 mile stretch to San Francisco. We did not plan for traffic, but we should have. There were a lot of cars on the road. We drove along the foggy coast for a while. Then the road began to climb ... read more

Geo: 37.4636, -122.427As hot as it has been in Fresno for the past 2 days, a cooling trend, combined with where we were headed, got us out of our shorts for the first time this trip and into genes. It was rather cool when we left our hotel this morning at 8:30 AM and pointed the car westward. I was a bit worse for wear today, considering the mountain climbing that I did yesterday, but it was worth it. I am glad I did it. No regrets. So we headed for the coast and the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH). Getting there took us through miles and miles of farmland. And if we were better at identifying crops from the road at 65 MPH, I could detail what they were growing, but I do know for sure that ... read more
