Tuesday, June 28, 2011 Getting a Late Start This morning I awoke with the full intent of getting going early. Unfortunately, the hotel breakfast really wasn’t that good and it gave me a sour stomach, so I flitted about my hotel room until I was more at ease. It was 10:30 by the time I got to the Duomo. Following the signs to the ticket office, I purchased a full combo pass which allowed me entrance to the treasury and underground baptistery and the elevator to the roof. You still have to pay to take the stairs up, but knowing myself and how I fatigue easily in this heat, I figured I’d let technology do the work for me. ”Up on the Rooftops, Step in Time…” The tiny elevator opened up to a tiny passageway leading ... read more

Sunday, June 26, 2011 Milan kicked my ass today. I’m going to the bar. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Today I was a little behind the learning curve. Milano is much heavier than Aosta, and I was not prepared for this. But I think I’ve learned from my mistakes and the next two days in town will be much more productive. Leaving Small Town Italy I got up earlier than I had been and finished packing my bag before going to breakfast. As before, I was stuffed with cake homemade doughnuts and fruit cocktail. Toward the end of my meal, the breakfast room filled with a large group of joyously loud Italians. One of the women has sisters in Seattle and Portland, so we ... read more

Saturday, June 25, 2011 Last night I dreamed in Italian. I think it is a good sign. Rise and Shine For the third say in a row I stuffed myself with cakes and fruit at breakfast. I was careful to avoid the cheese plate this time. My cappuccino was better than yesterday, possible from acquired taste. I left the hotel much earlier than the last few days in an attempt to get some mountain trail walking accomplished before the heat of the afternoon set in. Expectations versus Reality Above Aosta on the mountain slopes is the little ski village of Pila (Pee-la), accessed by a quiet 20 minute gondola ride. From its website and general description, I figured Pila was similar to Whistler. Upon arrival, I found this was not the case. Winter must be its ... read more

Friday, July 24, 2011 Anti-Starbucks Coffee, Per Favore This morning’s breakfast was as fantastic as yesterday’s, with one exception. I decided to try out a piece of cheese. It was soft, possibly brie. As soon as I put it in my mouth I realized my mistake. It tasted like feet. In America, with our proud cheddars and even prouder processed cheeses, our pallets have not adapted to the variety of cheese available. Even so, I could not bring myself to eat another bite of feet-cheese. The good news was that my hostess made me a cappuccino, which was so much richer than anything I’d experienced from an American coffee bar. It became very clear why there are no Starbucks in Italy – coffee here is superior. It’s rich, thick, and full, versus our “fast food” coffee, ... read more

Thursday, June 23, 2011 First Night in Italy Last night I finally rolled into town at 7pm. Two train changes and hours and hours of travel before that, I was beat. Still, the walk to the hotel was nice, at least I was moving. And providing entertainment for the locals, tugging my blue suitcase behind me while making several U-turns around the neighborhood. At last, I found my destination. After being checked in, my only concern was getting out of my sweaty clothes and into the shower. It was so refreshing. I hooked up my computer and had a brief chat with my mother online, and then crashed at 10pm local time. Where I Experience Culture Shock In the morning I dressed and went down for breakfast, where I again made a slight fool of myself ... read more

Wednesday, June 22, 2011 Time Zone Change Changing time zones in the air was interesting. It was afternoon daylight when we took off, but the plane windows were closed for some time, so I don’t know if it got dark anytime during our journey. When I opened the windows again, the Sun was rising for Europe. My first glimpse of the continent was a wind generator farm located off coast in the North Sea. And then we saw Holland. Flat, green, broken with canals, it was exactly as I remembered it from nine years ago. The airport, however, was forgettable. Wasn’t I Just Here? Connecting in Amsterdam is not as fun as one might think. Airport connections in general are not fun, now that I consider it. The plane was late leaving Seattle, so its late ... read more

Tuesday, June 21, 2011 Today I woke up thinking, “What am I doing?” Last minute changes I had been packing and re-packing all weekend. My carefully planned packing list turned out to be excessive, and my backpack, which I planned to weight 16-20 pounds, was a whomping 30 pounds! I went into mini-panic mode. How was I going to carry this bag on my back around Europe? I removed a couple items from my bag and weighted it again. Twenty-eight pounds. I had no idea what else I could remove at this point. My mother arrived early to take me to the airport, just in case. It was a good choice. Ten minutes before it was time to leave, I made a rash decision. Screw the backpack I had researched and planned for. Out came the ... read more

June 1, 2011 For future planning, I thought I might list the various sources used in preparing for my Italy trip. One Stop Shopping By far, the biggest resource was the Rick Steves travel company. I don’t want to sound like an advertising agency, but the Edmonds location really was one stop shopping. Travel classes, travel consultation, train ticket office, books, travel gear, TV shows, travel library. And on the website there was even more, like free audio tours for iPods, sample tour itineraries, the graffiti wall, and “tips and tricks.” Most of all, I liked that the company was not concerned about pressuring visitors to sign up for a tour. Their philosophy is that they simply want people to go to Europe, whether it’s with a tour or not. Recommended Reading I ended up buying ... read more

March 12, 2011 More free Rick Steves classes. I know – my blog entries are riddled with that guy’s name, and sometimes I feel like I am a free publicist. But the reality is that the Rick Steves company offers the best resources for travel in Europe and I am taking full advantage of the freebies whenever I can. I offer no apologies. The most recent freebie was another couple travel classes at the spring travel festival. I attended two classes: European Travel Skills with Rick Steves and Packing Light and Right with Joan Robinson. European Travel Skills was intended to follow the guidebook Europe Through the Back Door. While informative, the lecture did go off topic several times, and it could be argued that the audience came away with more information about legalizing marijuana than ... read more
