September 3, 2010 It is always a bummer to end a vacation, but at the same time I was glad to go. Time to get back to the real world. Mom and I slept in and lazily packed our bags. Our flight was not until 12:30 p.m. and we had plenty of time to bum around collecting our belongings. On our way out our hostess, Janna, thanked us for staying and was glad we enjoyed our time at her condo rental. I would totally stay at this place again, and Noe's Nest on the Big Island. Both were very comfortable and homey. We were in first class again on the way home. Thank goodness! It was great to have that leg room and not have to fight over arm rests. With a couple glasses of wine, ... read more

September 2, 2010 Up and at 'em. We got up and going pretty early (like 8 a.m.) to go on a drive upcountry, the genreal term for the little town-lettes on the slopes of Haleakala. From the distance, you can see the defined line where the green, lush forests begin. That is where we were headed. Upcounrty, Here We Come The official drive began in Pa'ia town, which was very cute, but very sleepy before 10 a.m. It looked like another town that would be fun to stroll around. On our way upwards to Makawao on Baldwin Avenue we had the fortune of passing bikers who were on their waiy downhill from their Halwakala sunrise excursion. (These tours typically include transportation to the summit, a continential breakfast, and equipment for the ride down. They make sure ... read more

September 1, 2010 The morning after our snorkel adventure was a tough one. The sunburn on my back hurt so much it was hard to sleep; every time I would change positions it felt like sandpaper was being scraped against my skin. Ouch. My arms and upper torso muscles were also really sore. I couldn't think why, the swimming was so minimal, I didn't want to think it was because I was that out of shape. Then I remembered, cumulatively I spent about an hour clutching onto the boat lines for my life as we sped through the wide open ocean. I mocked gripping on the boat and sure enough those were the muscles that were screaming at me. Still worth it. Mom and I lounged around the condo in the morning. She took a walk ... read more

September 1, 2010 People always picture Hawaii as a lush, tropical paradise. To our amusement, they couldn't be more wrong. The state has made a point of posting warnings saying how you could die if you take a wrong step. Some signs read like the warnings before roller coasters - this trail may not be suitable for people with heart conditions or for women who are pregnant. Others just say that if you do whatever it is they are advising against, it's your loss if the sea sucks you up. It really makes me wonder. Here are some signs we have seen so far: ... read more

August 31, 2010 Getting up early after a night of mai tais was a little difficult. Combined with the fact that Mom only got one cup of coffee, we were a little slow-going. Our snorkel boat was to launch at 6:45 a.m. and we were to meet it at 6:30 to check in. Ouch. Blue Water Rafting When I visited Maui four years ago I went on a snort snorkel cruise. We didn't have much time in the water, but it was so much fun I wanted to maxamize the experience this time. After some comparison, I decided that Blue Water Rafting was the best excursion. It is a little more pricey than others, but you are paying for a more private experience, with only 25 or so people, versus the 100 people on the other ... read more

August 30, 2010 Bye, Bye, Big Island Today we said Mahalo to the Big Island and Aloha to Maui. With our suitcases packed, we departed Noe's Nest and ventured back to Kona. Since we had been on every other major road on the island, we thought we would take the last unseen route of Highway 11, which runs along the south of the island. Well, if we had not taken this road, I don't think we would have missed much. Once we passed out of the green eastern side, the landscape turned into a sad version of the Yakima Valley. Dead trees, dead bushes, dead, dead, dead. I guess the nice thing was that there are few police and therefore no one to tell you to slow down as you pass through. Interestingly, instead of the ... read more

August 29, 2010 Today was designated as the road trip day. There is a 50-some odd mile route (one way) on Highway 19 that wraps around the north side of the island, offering pull-offs for walking, vistas, and tourist traps. When driving on the Big Island, be aware that there are no courtesy signs saying "Destination X 1/4 mile ahead." When it says "Destination X" with an arrow, you had better be ready to make that next turn, even if it is only 50 yards ahead. One sign said "Destination X middle lane." There was only the lane that went straight and a left turn lane. Technically, I suppose the left turn lane was in the middle of the outside lanes, but to a reasonable person, middle lanes are only when there are three lanes in ... read more

August 28, 2010 Lili'uokalani Gardens Our first stop in the morning was a visit to the Japanese-style garden on the waterfront of Hilo. It was so beautiful and serene. Several local families were just arriving and setting up their canopy tents, settling in for a day of sunshine and relaxation. Mom and I strolled the paths winding over the bridges and around tropical trees. The peace was broken when a tour bus rolled along, however, offloading tourists who flashed camera at everything. Yes, I take pictures of everything too, but somehow I feel it is different when I am not among a hoard of foreigners. After the bus packed up, we headed out of town for a scenic tour of the coast. August 27, 2010 Alarm Clock Rosters on Hawaii do not crow with the sunrise, which is about 6:30am. They begin at 3am and continue their snooze alarm through the rest of the night. Be aware, rural lodging may come with a defective alarm clock such as this. Volcanoes National Park In Washington, we have plenty of volcanoes to view. And at any given time, one of them may be doing something possibly interesting. But getting to walk around on a volcano which is actively erupting is something that is a little dangerous in the Pacific Northwest region. We spent the entire day with Kilauea. The $10 admission per vehicle is well worth the price if you enjoy short (or long) hikes through natural wonders. Our first stop was the visitor's center. The film was useful, giving ... read more

August 26, 2010 Aloha, Hawaii!! After hours of travel, we finally made it to the Big Island and at our resting desgtination of Hilo! Now Boarding We enjoyed the luxury of flying first class. This was a major benefit for a six hour flight. I was surprised that we were on a 737, as my previous 6+ hour flights were all on 747s. It was an older plane, no movie screen. Luckily, Alaska had these nifty devices, about the size of a portable DVD player, with pre-programmed TV shows, new movies, games and more. The main attendant for our section of the plane had an amusing take on his job. For example, during the safety brief he recited, "As you know, smoking is prohibited on this aircraft. And it will also shorten your life." And there ... read more
