Saturday Day 7 It's Paddy's day! With two Irish lasses on board, the flag is flying and Irish music accompanied a breakfast of sausages and scrambled eggs. We were a bit late for our 9am departure today but soon enough we were on the road, en route to Casablanca which should take around 6 hours. A few of us amused ourselves with a game of Scrabble, after which I listened to my iPod and dozed, snuggling into my new pillow with the pillowcase I received as a gift (thanks Emma!). Pretty sure I woke up yet again with my mouth gaping open but hey, at least I don't snore... When we arrived in Casablanca, we found that the campsite had given away our reservation to the plastic fantastics so Suse found a taxi that she could ... read more

Wednesday Day Four It was a freezing night in Camp Azilan, probably due to the higher altitude. I wore my djellaba to bed and tried to snuggle down into my sleeping bag as much as possible. We broke camp and made for Fes on what was to be our first long stretch of driving. The fields were so many shades of green but though the ground seemed fertile, Morocco received very little rain this winter, worrying a lot of people. The roads were lined with boys herding sheep and goats, sad looking donkeys and prickly pears. I sat at the back of the truck and stared out the window which meant I had my photo taken several times by people travelling in cars behind us! There was a lot of 'come here' gestures and waving and ... read more

Tuesday Day three This morning most of us were woken by the first call to prayer. At 5am. I awoke in surprise but was content in my sleeping bag listening to the closest call, the mosque being just behind the camping grounds, and could also hear another call from further away, both combining to make a lovely melodious tune. It was a less hurried morning as we weren’t leaving until 9am which gave us plenty of time. The conversation was lively in the truck as we made our way to Chefchaouen which I hadn’t been to on the previous visit to Morocco and was very much looking forward to. Eventually I drifted off to sleep and awoke to winding roads which took us high into the hills to a campsite that overlooked the valley below. Tents ... read more

Monday Day Two Alarms started buzzing and beeping around 6am and tent zippers followed soon after. I didn’t sleep as well as I would’ve liked but the warm shower soon sorted that. Breakfast was a variety of cereal, bread toasted over hot coals, fruit and tea and coffee. I sat on the curb opposite the truck to survey the scene as the sun rose higher, also bringing much welcomed warmth. Dishes were washed and then dried in the traditional way known as ‘flapping’ which also doubles as a bit of early morning exercise, waving your arms back and forth until the dish is at least somewhat dry. Water was poured on the coals, firewood packed back under the truck, bags packed and then quickly unpacked as we remembered what we wanted in the truck cabin for ... read more

Sunday, March 11. Day One. After a rather sleepless night followed by a wonderfully hot shower and equally wonderful English breakfast, I made my way from the hotel to the airport to await the arrival of The Gang. Suse, our fearless, most awesomest head honcho was easy to spot as she made her way into the airport and the second I saw her, I knew things were going to be great. Apart from Carlos, Brian and myself who were already in the vicinity, everyone flew in together. The twelve of them tumbled out of baggage claim with an assortment of backpacks, duffle bags and day packs with expectant, anxious, hopeful, excited faces that I'm sure mirrored my own. Greetings were exchanged and before long, I was enviously eyeing other peoples' abilities to pack light as we ... read more

Europe » Gibraltar March 10th 2012

So! I've arrived in Gibraltar! The Trip has finally started! Goodbyes were said, promises were made and I made my way here in posh class on BA, dressed in the cargos, fleece and hiking boots that are to become my uniform and carrying a backpack (full of camera equipment; I'm starting to think I should've gone for a different hobby, like maybe Tai Chi. Less equipment to lug). It was in fact cheaper to upgrade online at check-in than pay for a second bag. And although I didn't actually need the second bag allowance... Well, you know, just in case. After playing peekaboo with happy pre-toddler Freddy seated in front of me, I nodded off to sleep and awoke to the view of surprisingly blue waters, dotted with container ships and sunny skies. I now have ... read more

It's been a long time coming, this second entry. A few false starts on planes and trains here and there but I should probably start getting into the swing of things, seeing as I'm meant to be writing every Monday whilst travelling to let my dad know I'm alive (hi dad!)! I've done a lot since I left New York on December 2. In short, I was in Oz for three weeks, came back to London in time for new year's (nearly slept through it though!), went to Paris, Chipping Norton, Gent and even New York for a quick visit. But my time was mainly spent resting in London and I did a lot of that in front of the tv watching all seven seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. And before you knock me for ... read more

It's raining outside and I'm sitting next to the living room window with only the dim natural light (I really should clean my windows again) and the laptop screen for light. I've a burnt tongue from the horrible gluten free macaroni and cheese I ate (I don't get Americans' obsession with the stuff). I'm sneezing and my nose is stuffed - the walk in the rain in Brooklyn last night may have something to do with that (and the fact that I walked us about 4 blocks in the wrong direction before I realised). Katy Perry's Firework is on 103.5 KTU's station that I have playing on my laptop. So far, I know I don't have an audience, which makes writing this even odder. But when - or if - I eventually do, you'll probably realise ... read more

Antarctica » Antarctica February 6th 2011

Slept great last night, just not long enough. After breakfast we arrived at Devil's Island which is next to the much larger Vega Island in the Weddell Sea. There were so many cool icebergs and the island was cool too; so called because two hills, one at each end, look like 'devil horns'. We were the last group to go out, having been the first yesterday and our time was cut short due to ice floe around the boat. It was a fantastic visit though. A steep climb from the shore, the island was covered in penguins, as far as the eye could see! The Adelie penguin was fun to watch, collecting small rocks and depositing them a few feet away and repeating over and over, building a nest for itself. Then, when it was done, ... read more

Saturday at 07:50 I slept poorly Friday night; only until about 3am when we entered the Drake Passage and the rolling began. It's a bizarre, tiring feeling, thinking you're constantly going to fall out of bed. But I may have also giggled a bit (until I was really tired and it stopped being funny). My bed also makes a lot of cracking noises and slides side to side so it was a bit disconcerting. I was exhausted and dopey from the effects of the Dramamine but managed to drag myself to the dining room and eat a pot of yoghurt for breakfast after trying the rice bread they made for me - a very sweet gesture but YUCK. Others tried it as well so I know it wasn't just me! One of The Americans then took ... read more
