If you haven’t already realized by now dear reader snow is something that I am easily excited about. Having seen snow only once (in my life) for a week whilst skiing in Australia before this trip, I have now seen it multiple times in different countries and it is fantastic. Unlike the locals I am not as yet put off by the slushiness occurrence that happens after snowing, it is still rather magical to me. We are currently travelling by train from St Petersburg to Moscow, and the outside view for lack of a better word is spectacular; we have passed a number of snow lined forests, villages and streets buried in snow with dim light glowing from the windows and smoke pouring from the chimneys, it is incredible to see. The railway yard leaving St ... read more

The capture of Leningrad was one of three strategic goals in Hitlers initial plan, codenamed Operation Barbarossa, for invading and conquering the Soviet Union. Hitlers strategy was motivated by Leningrads political status as the former capital of Russia and the symbolic capital of the Russian Revolution, its military importance as a main base of the Soviet Baltic Fleet and its industrial strength, housing numerous arms factories. The Siege of Leningrad, also known as The Leningrad Blockade was an unsuccessful military operation by the Axis powers to capture Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg) during World War II. The siege started at 8 September 1941, when the last land connection to the city was severed. Although Soviets managed to open a narrow land corridor to the city at 18 January 1943, the total lifting of the siege happened a ... read more

On 1 May, 1703 (Russian calendar), during the Great Northern War, Peter the Great captured the Swedish fortress of Nyenskans on the Neva river in Ingria. A few weeks later, on 27 May, 1703 (May 16, Old Style), lower on the river, on Zayachy (Hare) Island, three miles (5 km) inland from the gulf, he laid down the Peter and Paul Fortress, which became the first brick and stone building of the new city. He named the city after his patron saint, Saint Peter, the apostle. The original name was meant to sound like Dutch due to Peter's obsession with the Dutch culture. The city was built by conscripted serfs from all over Russia and also by Swedish prisoners of war under the supervision of Alexander Menshikov and later became the centre of Saint Petersburg Governorate. ... read more

Europe » Belgium » Brussels-Capital Region » Brussels October 7th 2009

After our brief two night stay in Antwerp we caught the train back to Brussels. A sure sign we were nearing the city of Brussels we passed the red neon glow of the red light district. The girls barely covered in their seductive lace outfits, in a little room, the windows facing the street of onlookers. Some girls just seemed to pace their window while others sat in the corner. Some even interacting and teasing potential clientele through the glass. I found the whole experience not to dissimilar to that of a puppy attempting to impress a shopper through a pet store window. We arrived at the station both fatigued and full of adrenaline. This trip has been pretty much go go go for me, and my prior work stop in Antwerp was no exception. We ... read more

I have been looking forward to the UK ever since we left Colorado. Maybe it was because I was yearning for more cold weather after our snowy experience in the Colorado mountainside? Perhaps, though I think it was more so because London is familiar territory. In that sense we have planned out this jaunt around the world rather well, every second or third stop we make is familiar to at least either me or Michelle. Currently, we are on route to Brussels via the Eurostar rail, a two hour journey traveling some 420km. Other than this train trip and the one to and from Bristol earlier in the week I haven't really had much of a chance to sit down in solitude with my thoughts, there has just been too much to see and do in ... read more

I am currently on a train bound for London on my way back from a day trip out to Bristol where I visited the United Kingdom head office of Roland DG. It has been pretty much my first chance since arriving in London three days ago to get up to date with my writing having just finished ‘Australia: The land of The Crocodile Hunter and Elle McPherson - according to Yankee’ a few moments earlier. The day trip out was great, it was really interesting to see Roland operations from behind the scenes. I was there mainly to meet with their head sales distribution coordinator to do a presentation of the software I have been slaving over for the past three and a half years. As with the stops before, one at Epilog Colorado (Laser Engravers) ... read more

Our second morning into New York started on a very patriotic note, Michelle and I caught the metro to Battery Park for boarding a ferry to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. We arrived at Battery park a good hour before our Ferry was due to depart, in fact so early that the Ferry before ours hadn’t even departed yet. Fortunately for us we were able to board the earlier ferry which meant we had just gained an hour in our day. Of course before we could board the ferry, and again later on before we could walk up the steps of the Statue of Liberty we went through a grueling security check, similar to that of the airport immigration. “Shoes off, belts off; stand in this line. No food or water past this point. ... read more

Having fallen in love with the laid back get outdoors nature of Golden Colorado it has taken me some time to adjust to New York City. The two are complete opposites, Golden promotes its outdoor lifestyle and NYC promotes the life in the city; where being close to nature i.e. a window view of Central Park from your apartment will set you back $3000.00 a month. Broadway to me seems a separate entity of NYC altogether. In some sense it reminds me of the Las Vegas strip, with just fewer neons and instead of people handing out cards of strippers and escorts you have people offering you free seats to the ‘funniest standup in town’ (free as long as you purchase a couple of drinks at the show). We arrived into New York rather exhausted from ... read more

North America » United States » Colorado » Denver September 24th 2009

Colorado has been amazing, and continuing with the American spirit we have experienced thus far, the people have been really friendly too. We arrived in Denver Colorado at 5.25pm, almost three hours later than we were initially scheduled for. Although it may not sound too much a lot happened in that time; for one, what was a sunny afternoon three hours earlier had begun to fade into the night, and secondly a front was coming in, which meant the one full day we had in Golden Colorado will probably be a miserable one. We were picked up from the airport by Jon, a work colleague I befriended last year in Sydney and his wife Julie. They proceeded to check us into our accommodation before inviting us to join them for some dinner at a local ... read more

Or at least that is the way to get to Golden on the road, which in retrospect would of probably been more relaxing and enjoyable rather than having to put up with our second flight delay in the United States. Similar to the flight from San Francisco to Las Vegas, our United Airlines flight to Denver has been delayed by two hours due to extended maintenance required for the aircraft. I don’t know which comforts me more, the fact that United Airlines are thorough with their maintenance and thus happily taking more time to get it right, or the fact that the aircraft in question requires the extra attention. Perhaps they ran out of duct tape and need more? It is a shame, we are both looking forward to checking out Colorado, it sounds amazing and ... read more
