Between the clickety-clack sound of iron wheels hitting new line segments and the rocking motion of our sleeper train as it makes its way out of Hanoi for Sapa, putting thought to words and indeed those words to screen has never seemed so difficult. Now, some 24 hours from starting this adventure we are nearing the beginning of our first chapter of this return to Vietnam – the rural farming community of Sapa. A tour liaise was waiting for us as we arrived at Hanoi train station. With our luggage in tow, Michelle and I, along with four other westerners ventured out to the train platform as a series of lemmings, following the liaisons footsteps to the letter; all the way down the end of the main platform, across 4 or 5 rail lines, narrowly missing ... read more

Having just turned down the current book I am reading ‘The Long Way Round’, I look up at the departure sign at gate 5 of Ho Chi Minh City’s domestic airport – eagerly awaiting our next departure; our third flight of the day, our final flight of the day. The trip which we had been earning to do ever since flying out of Hanoi in 2009 ( our first visit to Vietnam) started 11 hours ago with our departure from Perth International Airport on a Jetstar flight to Singapore. I had only flown Jetstar once before, only years earlier to Singapore for Michelle’s birthday, all I could recall of the flight was the defiant decision made to never fly with them again, but for the life of me I couldn’t recall why. Sure enough years on, ... read more

For new years we booked a riverside table in Clarke Quay. Along the river on both sides the Quay is made up of many restaurants and bars all serving specialty foods, mostly seafood. After the trouble we had last time trying to find a place to dine with a menu that suited both of us, the solution was obvious; Hooters. Despite certain preconceptions Hooters may bring to mind (not that I had a problem with any of them) the girls did provide fantastic service and most importantly the menu was varied and both Michelle and I had no problem selecting from the menu. Our table was situated alongside the water boasting a fantastic view of Clark Quay, the tips of both the Singapore flyer and Marina Bay Sands. Our table booking was for 7:30 and since ... read more

Universal Studios Singapore was incredible, what it lacked from its American cousin in size it made up for with quality and variety. Unlike Universal Studios California (USC) both a theme park and working studio, Universal Studios Singapore (USS) was purely a theme park. USS featured a great many worlds, the most popular of these being Ancient Egypt and Jurassic Park, other worlds included Battlestar Galactica, Far far away (Shrek) and Madagascar. Unlike the USC park, the USS featured a number of attractions for each world. Jurassic Park for instance featured 3 different rides. Our first stop was the Mummy roller coaster in Ancient Egypt; I had been looking forward to this ride ever since I heard it was featured in USS. Since we were at Universal as they opened we managed to make it across the ... read more

Singapore has changed much over the years. Whether the native Singaporeans can see the big picture or not, their lovely City is transforming from the quaint tropical City paradise where the cost of an item in an orchard road shop was the max and you bartered down from there to a clash of western meets middle East with boutique shops standing in place of bargain markets. Don't misunderstand, in the midst of his transformation Singapore has grown even more beautiful as a City. Unfortunately however the Singapore culture is been pushed out with it. Just one of the many simple things that made Singapore so welcoming were the friendly native cab drivers; always happy to chat and show off their proud City. In the five days we've been here only two out of the ten or ... read more

Six weeks, seven countries and twelve cities later, our tour to Russia the long way round has finally drawn to a close. It has been the most incredible experience and I am very glad to say there isn’t any one thing that stands out well beyond the others, there were so many magical moments of our trip: seeing snow and wild Elk in Golden Colorado and dining out with Jon and Julie who we both had a fantastic time with; the neon extravaganza of both Las Vegas and Times Square in New York City; the climb to the observation deck of the Empire State Building; seeing Phantom of the Opera on Broadway; my first rail trip in England going out to Bristol and the Eurostar voyage to Belgium; pub crawls and luxury dining in Belgium; hiking ... read more

Our Russian experience has been incredible and happily concern free. Upon preparing for this trip, we did what many before us had done, we read numerous Travel blog entries of peoples experienced in Russia, visited the Trip Advisor website for the dos and don’ts and for the most part they all painted a similar picture, that Russia wasn't going to be easy. Various blogs warned of trouble with corrupt policemen, requesting bribes and falsifying reports. Our research also emphasized that non-Russian speaking people will struggle and that Moscow was very expensive to live in. Although up until our last day we were wary of the police and kept a separate stash of bribe money on us at all times, not once were we or anyone else around us stopped to have their credentials checked. For the ... read more

The Allies are back! Frankfurt has been a breath of fresh air after our 11 day tour of Russia. Don't get me wrong, I very much enjoyed my time in both St Petersburg and Moscow; I could spend a great deal longer further experiencing the history and culture of Russia, as well as the approaching minus degree Celsius temperatures, however, for a first time visit, a change of pace was definitely welcomed after the 11th day. Little things like having to carry your passport around you at all times whilst in Russia slowly became more like having a ball and chain around your foot. The heightened sense of alert you had to maintain; watching out for pickpockets, and being prepared to mime what you are after to non-English speaking people became quite exhausting to think of ... read more

Moscow Airport: Waiting on tarmac for take-off clearance We haven't even pulled out from the gate yet and already this flight has gone for long enough. Of course, the two hour delay at the gate hasn’t helped, and for the life of me still cannot fathem how a flight can be delayed for takeoff due to our ‘weather conditions’ as flight control over the intercom so put it. Looking out of the airport lounge window, at our aircraft which was sitting at its gate, not a cloud in sight, nor evidence of any wind, just sunny blue skies. Sitting immediately behind me on board a two year old wails in the high pitch yell only a child could have. No, he is not in discomfort; he is just simply doing it because he can. After several ... read more

So far Moscow has been equally as welcoming as its counterpart to the north, St Petersburg. The following morning after our arrival the night before we awoke early, today was going to be a long day; we had two tours booked. First was a metro tour, which involved the guide meeting us at our hotel and then walking from our hotel to the closest metro station and showing us about various station stops helping us become familiar with the key transport of the city. Later that evening the same tour guide will take us on a night city tour of Moscow. We opted to do this as we both figured it would be the safest environment to take photos at night. From prior experience after doing a single tour both Michelle and I were usually quite ... read more
