Geo: -33.6459, 115.032Todays Challenge - To visit five of Margaret Rivers top wineries.Today is Deb's birthday and we rise late as the wineries don't open till 10 am. I offer Deb a champagne as we prepare to go down to the resort for breakfast. She declines saving herself for todays challenge. We order a scrumptious breakfast and do a lap of the resort on their fitness walking track to work it off. On returning to our room Deb checks for birthday wishes and already has 17 messages. She feels special! As we head off for the day it is overcast and starts to rain but this will not deter our plans. Our first stop is the township of Margaret River which is full of trendy stores and boasts 5 surf shops. It is here that we learn that ... read more

Geo: -33.6459, 115.032Todays Challenge - Not to have a challenge as we can't think of one.We depart Albany without seeing a number of attractions we hoped to see (perhaps this may be a reason to return). As predicted the weather is stormy. We refuel and hit the highway as it begins to rain, we try to outrun it for the next two hours, The countryside starts to morph into dense red-gum forest and this part of the journey becomes a very interesting drive as we are overshadowed by giant trees. We pass a German cyclist in the middle of nowhere; how do we know he is German? He is wearing black socks and sandals. As we approach Pemberton we see wineries and boutique accommodation around every bend, this is beautiful countryside. We stop in the town for a ... read more

Geo: -35.0239, 117.884Todays Challenge - To discover Albany's link with the ANZACs.Today we rise a little later as we are spending another day in this lovely town. We have booked a cruise on the Kalgan Queen which departs from Emu Point, crosses Oyster Bay and heads up the Kalgan River to Montgomery's Hill Vineyard, The cruise is full of Grey Nomads but this seems to be the norm when you book a tour.On board we meet the skipper who is a real character, has a wealth of knowledge on Albany's history and is a compelling story teller. We find out that Albany was originally named 'Frederickstown' and the bay we were crossing derived its name when Major Locker's crew cut their feet on oyster shells when searching for food and water. Not to be discouraged they collected ... read more

Geo: -35.0239, 117.884Todays Challenge - To spot a whale.Depart Esperance at 7.00 am and refuel, Rod notes that it is still cheaper than Brisbane. We have an uneventful drive until we hit Ravensthhorpe where we spot the first cop car since Ceduna, they are pulling over a poor sucker that has exceeded the speed limit in a school zone. The town has a population of 400, they must be bored! We pass a sign the says we are entering the Fitzgerald Biosphere. What the f#&k is that? Rod suggests we might be entering a radioactive zone. We drive through Jerramungup (what a mouth full), we see no sign of life. We pass through the next town of Gardner, still no sign of life. Deb opens the window and a blast of hot air melts her lip gloss, so ... read more

Geo: -33.8613, 121.891Todays Challenge - As per the roadsigns ............. to spot a camel on the NullarborWe depart Madura at 6 50am and refuel before we hit the road, Rod notes the cost of fuel is $2.12 per litre. We enter the longest stretch of straight road in Australia being 142km and yes this was monotonous.Stop at Balledonia for a meat pie for breakfast and refuel at a cost of $2.17 per litre. We search for their museum advertised on the roadsign but can't find it.On the road again we gain another 45 minutes on a time zone change which puts us in Noresman at 11.45am. We have crossed the Nullarbor in one piece and sink a Crownie to celebrate. This place was named after an old buggered horse who crossed the Nullarbor and founded the town ... read more

Geo: -32.1261, 133.675Today's Challenge - To abide by the mandatory Nullarbor protocol of the one finger steering wheel wave.Depart Ceduna at 7.00am being first light. With some anticipation we are not sure what we have gotten ourselves into today.Arrive at the first town on the Nullarbor; Penong. It is big enough to justify a 60kph speed limit, but not big enough for a Chinese restaurant. Their biggest industry seems to be windmill blowing. We pass the last shop for 1,000 km.Getting windy. Sit up straighter as though this will balance the car better. As we pass through Nundoo, we decide not to stay here on our return. The odometer hits 3000 km. just outside of Yalata. Deb spots a huge eagle sitting on the side of the road. We start to wonder why everybody says this is ... read more

Geo: -34.7202, 135.858Today's Challenge – To refrain from doing a full wave to passing vehicles and practice the one finger steering wheel wave before we hit the Nullarbor. We depart at 8.10am hoping to catch an oyster factory tour in Coffin Bay some 45 minutes away. Our two day break in Port Lincoln was great and we will definitely miss the fine seafood. We would recommend this place to anyone. We have a very pretty drive to Coffin Bay which is 20 minutes off the highway, it is a very quaint town that swells to 30 times it's population during the holidays, luckily it is very quiet when we arrive. We look for the Coffin Bay Oyster Company but of course it is closed on Saturday. We notice that oysters are for sale in every store and consider ... read more

Geo: -34.7202, 135.858Today's Challenge – To purchase a freshly cooked crayfish. (It's nearing the end of the season so this will be tough) We start the day with a 45 minute walk along the Parnkalla walking trail, then we head off on a 'Swim with the Tuna tour’, we have no intention of swimming with those suckers, but this is a must do tour if you are in Port Lincoln. The weather is immaculate and the water as smooth as glass. The tour operator fill us in on the local aquaculture industry and the demise of the tuna industry and to as why they now farm tuna, which is where we are heading today. Our group is full of pensioners but they are ever so friendly. On arriving at the viewing platform we discover there are ... read more

Geo: -34.7202, 135.858Today's Challenge – To consume 3 dozen oysters before the day is out. This morning we take a walk along the foreshore at sunrise. We return to our room and Debi prepares a cooked breakfast consisting of bacon and eggs with champagne. We have it on our balcony watching the sun rise over the harbor. We refuel the car then head to the jetty to board the Outback Eco Cruise we booked for 10.30am. This is a great trip and it heads north of the harbor instead of south, (check the map) this defies the local belief that there is no water to the north of the city. On heading off we spot 4 dolphins and one swims in the bow wave......... Doh spotting dolphins was yesterday’s challenge. We head north for 10 km before the ... read more

Rod washes the bugs off the front of the car and we search for a servo. We pass three but they are closed and Rod creates the cardinal sin wheand says "we will refuel down the road”. Rod checks the on-boad fuel computer and it indicates we have 250km to empty. We spot a sign that tells us that the next main town is 240km away. "That's cutting it close” we both say. We hit the tiny town of Cockburn and it has a single fuel bowser with nothing marked on it. Rod asks the girl in ... read more
