Tour Day 141, Cruise Day 39 – There were no appealing shore excursions in Boracay, Philippines; however, I was planning to tender to shore and mosey around the dock area for a spell. Those plans were scuttled by a) a cautionary flier distributed to each cabin that warned of the precarious condition of the steps at the tender dock, and b) by the captain’s warning issued over the ship intercom about the rough seas and the increased challenges of transferring both to and from the tender to the tender docks. Four opportunities to incur additional injury to either wing! Not a prudent move, so I opted to stay on the ship. Tour Day 138, Cruise Day 36 – "Best of Kaohsiung & Tainan" Shore Excursion – Kaohsiung, Taiwan – Those who have been following my post–COVID blogs might know that I typically copy and paste the tour shore excursion description into my blog to give my readers some information and insight into the photos I have included. For some reason, when I tried (on multiple occasions) to call up the description for this shore excursions from the Holland America web site, I got “Error 505” or some such thing. For this blog, you’re not going to get much background as I cannot remember the names of the gardens, temples and shrines I visited and photographed. Anyway, here it is, and I hope you enjoy!... read more

Tour Day 132, Cruise Day 30 – Osaka, Japan – I fully intended to visit Kaiyukan, the Osaka Aquarium, and to ride the Tempozan Wheel (a.k.a an observation wheel or a giant wheel), but I saw too many deployed umbrellas from the Deck 9 Lido Market while having breakfast. By lunchtime, I saw fewer umbrellas and took a chance. Of course, the gangway is mid-ship, the immigration facility is at the bow and all of the attractions (including Legoland, which I had no intention of visiting) are well past the stern of the ship. A bump in the road. I walked past the wheel and saw there are three flights of stairs to reach the boarding area. On a clear, beautiful day, just another bump in the road but on an overcast day with compromised vistas, ... read more

I could have taken the “Panoramic Osaka” Shore Excursion the next day but wanted to see Osaka at night. Tour Day 132, Cruise Day 30 – “Panoramic Osaka” Shore Excursion – Osaka is the largest merchant city in western Japan. The town is divided into two areas -- Kita and Minami, literally translating as North and South. These areas have very different characteristics, which you will discover on a panoramic drive through lively Osaka. Head to Osaka North, whose downtown area is called Kita or Umeda. This is a business and shopping district surrounding Osaka station. You will see the Umeda Sky building -- an arch-shaped architecture which consists of two towers with a sky garden and atrium on the top. The garden is actually an observatory and, when the building was constructed, it was lifted ... read more

Tour Day 128, Cruise Day 26 – Shimizu, Japan – We had a notably topsy-turvy night getting to Shimizu, and, indeed, the captain announced we had aborted our first approach to the harbor because of the persistent high winds. Our second approach was successful, we arrived under brilliant blue skies and were greeted by a spectacular view of Mt. Fuji. My shore excursion didn’t begin until 1200 hours, so I circled the ship on the walking deck, watching the docking proceedings and taking several pictures I hope you enjoy. “Nihondaira Outlook & Kunozan Toshogu Shrine“ Shore Excursion Begin this spiritual day with a coach ride to Nihondaira Park Outlook -- a Prefecture Natural Park and the perfect spot to take in views of Suruga Bay and magnificent Mt Fuji (weather permitting). Tour Day 126, Cruise Day 24 – Fukuoka (Hakata), Japan – One of the first non-travel events to land on my planning spreadsheet was the Superbowl. A time-zone calculation meant the GAME should start shortly after breakfast. When I began to incorporate and examine the shore excursions, it was nice to see that there was nothing appealing in Fukuoka. Unfortunately, a couple of days before game day, I began to develop a cold and/or allergies had struck. Although the Superbowl was on the TV in my cabin and on the big screen in the Rock and Roll Lounge, I lazed away the morning dozing off periodically until my stomach won the battle. The score indicates that I missed a good game. Congrats to KC! Tour Day 127, Cruise Day 25 – Scenic Cruising Kanmon Strait –Japan ... read more
