I noted earlier that the folks from my tour of Ireland (Overland Ireland) suggested I move my tour one tour later in the year to avoid the havoc (crowded restaurants, etc.) brought about by The Galway Races Summer Festival. I agreed, but my return to London from the Wales tour “late in the day” on Friday and a 0830 departure on Sunday for the Ireland tour gave me only Saturday to move my base of operations. Fortunately, I will have two days to explore Dublin after the conclusion of the tour of Ireland. That early Sunday appointment got me up and going on Saturday to have breakfast, stock my small suitcase with clean laundry (from the big suitcase that had been in storge), stow the big suitcase AGAIN and get to London Heathrow to catch the ... read more

THU, 28 JUL 2022 – “Day 4: Our last full day in Wales is spent exploring the extreme south-west. You see some of Britain’s most gorgeous coastlines at the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. This region is stunning and was the birthplace of both the patron saint of Wales, and the Twdyr (anglicised to Tudor) royal dynasty. You stop in the county town of Pembroke, where you can enter the thick medieval walls of the castle. And after this, you travel on to the tiny cathedral city of St Davids for lunch and time for exploration. In the afternoon we return to Tenby for an afternoon exploring this colourful town with its beachside Georgian Houses, Cobbled Alleys and 13th century Medieval town walls.“ Overnight Tenby, Wales... read more

WED, 27 JUL 2022 – “Day 3: Leaving Aberystwyth, you travel around the coast of Cardigan Bay through the quaint town of Aberaeron, and to New Quay. A sumptuous sandy harbour, whitewashed houses, and connections to Dylan thomas: this town is one of the most picturesque and interesting little towns in Britain. What’s more, is from the breakwater wall you may be lucky enough to spot dolphins and whales. The tour continues inland to Carreg Cennen Castle, home to the Welsh princes of Deheubarth and later a stronghold of King Edward I. Explore the castle and learn more about the great period of castle building that helped to consolodate the English kings claim on Wales. Later we head for the coast again at Laugharne where Dylan Thomas wrote the famous play "Under Milk Wood". From here ... read more

TUE, 26 JUL 2022 – “Day 2: Travel north into the spectacularly mountainous region of the Snowdonia National Park. The first stop is in the ancient market town of Machylleth. You then visit the beautiful mountain village of Beddgelert, where you can see the famous grave of ‘Gelert’, the legendary dog, or explore the nearby copper mine. You travel on to Porthmadog and over the Cob causeway before reaching Harlech Castle. This mighty medieval castle sits high on a hill, and looks perfectly impenetrable. I had originally scheduled my tour of Ireland to precede the tour of Wales; however, the Ireland tour provider informed me that the eight days of the 2022 Galway Races would coincide with my tour of Ireland. It was suggested I move my tour one week in either direction from my original dates for a less chaotic, more pleasurable experience. The last thing I wanted to contend with in various Irish attractions and restaurants was a long waiting line, so I request a flip-flop with the folks from Rabbie's Tours. That request was granted, so Wales, home to many of my maternal ancestors, got moved forward on the itinerary. From Rabbie's Tours, “Introduction – Wales is an intriguing place. Somehow this small country has more castles per square mile than anywhere else in Europe. Amazingly, 20% ... read more

SAT, 23 JUL 2022 TRAIN TO LONDON Rabbie's Tours, tour provider for the 5-Day Discover Wales Small-Group Tour from London, normally does not secure accommodations for any of the nights before, during or after the tour and there is no welcome reception or farewell dinner included in the tour; however, I learned that, because I had booked through Tourradar, it had secured those hotel rooms on my behalf for the four nights we would be on the road. With no hotel as a starting point, I chose a Comfort Inn within walking distance of the Monday morning meeting point, Greenline Coach Terminal. WED, 20 JUL 2022 TRAIN TO BRUSSELS, BELGIUM: My only experience with the rail system in Europe thus far has been with the high-speed trains (save that last-minute hop aboard before it departs fiasco) and not with the local trains. All of those trains have been staged at the platform awaiting its passengers well before the departure time – in a couple of cases, over thirty minutes early. Retrospectively, all of those trains also have been staged because that particular station was the origin of the train’s journey. Even though the high-speed trains made stops along the way for from two to five minutes, that scenario never even entered my mind for the train that pulled in at my platform over ten minutes before my scheduled departure. I got aboard, found a seat and heard the ... read more

SUN, 17 JUL 2022 TRANSFER TO BRUGES, BELGIUM: The train ride itself was uneventful, as expected. I had a 24-minute layover in Brussels, Belgium to make my connection for Bruges, Belgium. No problem. Plenty of time. After all, this isn’t O’Hare. After I disembarked the first train, I looked at the tote board and found nothing going to Bruges. The line at the information/ticket counter was long enough to take me well past my departure time, and there were no apparent service representatives within sight, so I pursued the next logical option and went to the platform with trains departing at 1652. When I arrived, I showed an attendant my electronic ticket. While he was fumbling about, another customer service person approached and informed me that I was at the International Annex. That made sense as ... read more

The train arrived in Luxembourg City, Luxembourg at 1552. By the time I arrived at the hotel, there was little time for anything besides a short walk and a bite to eat; however, as I was settling into my room, I heard patriotic music from the street below. Stepping onto the balcony, I saw several well-dressed folks involved in some kind of ceremony across the street from the hotel at what I later learned is the Monument of Remembrance. I asked the clerk on my way out to dinner if the ceremony had anything to do with France’s Bastille Day Celebration and if the predominant language in Luxembourg was French. He confirmed both of my suspicions. – Three Nights – Grand Hotel Cravat – Luxembourg City, Luxembourg FRI, 15 JUL 2022 TOURISM: I had nothing in ... read more
