I had looked on lds.org the night before and saw that there were three options for churches to attend. One was far away, so was ruled. I then went on Google maps to see which was most subway accessible. I decided to attend the 9:00AM Kuala Lumpur Branch. **If you are ever bored and want something fun to do open a tab on your brower for lds.org meetinghouse locater and another tab for Google maps, satellite view. In the lds.org browser type in a random city or country and find the address of a church building. The key to this is use think big—a remote villiage in Mongolia, a little island in the South Pacific….Then you go to Google Maps, enter the address of the church, remember to stay in satellite view, zoom in and see ... read more

My second to last day in Malaysia—I wanted to make the most of it. I got up a bit earlier than I have been and hit the ground running. My first stop was to FRIM (Forest Research Institute of Malaysia). This was in a town about 10 miles north of Kuala Lumpur. To get there I had to get on monorail downtown, then transfer to the commuter train and then take a 15 minute taxi ride to the place (to put in perspective though—this only cost $5 USD but probably would have cost at least $30 in DC). This place is just what it says it is a place where they study trees. They have arboretums, traditional Malay houses, a waterfall, and hiking. I went for the main draw—the canopy walk. I hadn’t eaten breakfast so ... read more

Another later start to the morning, but I knew I would have a later night so I planned accordingly. (Though I sure will miss just sleeping until my body is ready to get up!) Another hot day in Malaysia, but I first headed out for some soup for lunch. Another delicious serving of Nasam Curry Laska. Hot, a bit spit spicy, and happily slurped. I then took a train over towards the museum area. A few thoughts about Malaysian public transportation (in comparison to DC public transportation—because it is what I know). The stations and trains are cleaner. The rail service is more extensive it goes out quite far from the city center. That said the inter-city train system is just a bit odd. There are three different and separate systems. They were all built at ... read more

I had a bit of a late start this morning, but finally got myself ready and headed out the door a little after noon. First stop lunch. I did a bit of research before so I could get some good food on my way to the conference hotel from my hotel. Surprisingly, a food court in the bottom of a shopping center came highly recommended. I went. Food courts here, as I have mentioned are a bit different than what you would expect at your local mall. This one was more like a maze with stalls that just made a few dishes and did not have a full kitchen. The food is also markedly better than your typical food court fare. It is like getting the yummy food off the street, except in a lot cleaner ... read more

I am combining these days because they were both conference days and not as much to write about as regular travel/ site-seeing days. The conference I attended was the 5th Annual Global Communications Association Conference 2011. The title of the Conference was Global Power Shifts: Impact on Economy, Politics, Culture and Media. Why did I choose this conference? The award I got from work obligates me to attend an international conference. Some people who apply for the award find a conference and the country it is in is of secondary importance and some people choose a country or region they want to visit and then find a conference that will be held there. My approach was the former. I Google searched conferences that would be somewhat related to my line of work and found this conference, ... read more

Today was my intended to be my “relax/catch up day.” I guess when you are in a country for almost two and a half week—you have the luxury of having one of those. I stayed in my hotel room until about 10:15 and then set out to do some laundry. I had asked the hotel clerk the night before about the nearest place and she directed to me one less than a five minute walk away. Perfect. I had visions of me at a laundromat switching my laundry in and out as I read my travel guide book planning my free time in KL. Not to be. In fact, I don’t know that they even had Laundromats in Malaysia. You take your laundry to a store front (everything is open air here) and they do it ... read more

Wheewie, I am tired. But it was a good day and tomorrow should be pretty relaxing. I am doing laundry in the morning and then may go hunt down a fish spa! Will also use the day to plan my three free days (Fri, Sat, Sun) in KL. I got a phone call probably around midnight (I was slightly disoriented) letting me know that the bike tour was a no-go because there weren’t enough people to make it a go. I wasn’t too disappointed because it had been so up in the air the whole time. So this morning I got up and got myself ready and then walked to church. It was about a 30 minute walk—I really didn’t get too lost. The church was in a row of other store fronts/business but had the ... read more

As much as I was able to get myself around Malaysia yesterday with great aplomb, I was an equal part completely lost today. It was still a good day in Melaka, Malaysia though. I had a little bit later of stat today, but walked myself into the main part of town and decided to take a 45 minute river cruise to get myself situated. It was okay. It was along the waterway through a part of town, so the most interesting part was to see the houses along the way. After the cruise I set off for some sightseeing. The main thing I saw as Stadthuys which was a building the Dutch built when they occupied the city. It now houses a museum about the history of Melaka (I have found the history with all the ... read more

Today was the day that I proved I would be a formidable team member on the Amazing Race. I got up a little earlier than usual, had a light breakfast at the hotel, and then caught the 8:30 bus to KL. The first two hours were incredibly windy. After that it was mostly highway. We got to KL around 1:15. I thought it would be a simple transfer within the train station to get the bus to Melakka. No. I get off the bus and then have to ask for help several times. Mind you that this bus station was an indoor area, though rather modern, with no air conditioning. Turned out, I have to take KL’s version of the metro about seven stops to get to the correct train station. Then I can catch the ... read more
