South America » Chile » Easter Island » Hanga Roa August 4th 2010

Wednesday 4.8.2010 day 294 Fly from Rapa Nui to Santiago We got up at 7:30 and took a packed bfast with us to Sunrise at Tongariki where there are 15 standing Moai. We took our quad bike with us and took the beach road so we could see the sun coming up all the way along it looked fantastic. When we got to Tongariki the sun was coming up over the hill not the ocean so we knew that we were not going to get the sunrise photos that we hope for, even though it still looked very nice with the sun coming though the Moai and reflecting on the hill behind. We had our bfast then headed back to town where we dropped off our quad bike and walked back to our accommodation had a ... read more

Tuesday 3.8.2010 day 293 Quad biking around Rapa Nui We woke up to the most fantastic sunrise and a beautiful sunny day so we headed to the markets and got some more freshly caught fish from the market this time we got a smaller fish about ½ k for about $5 Aus dollars. We headed to Orongo were the bird man ritual were held and the site of a fantastic volcano creator. South America » Chile » Easter Island » Hanga Roa August 2nd 2010

Monday 2.8.2010 day 292 Raining in the worlds navel The locals call Rapa Nui, ‘Te Pio o te Hemua’ the worlds navel. Today we had planned to get up early and take a packed bfats to Tongariki to see the sun rise but it rained all night and at sunrise there was a heavy downfall, so we decided to sleep in a little. We still had to take the scooter back at 10 am and we were going to exchange it for a quid bike but due to the rain we will do that tomorrow. On the way back from dropping the scoter my friend got talking to the locals about their right for independence and they want their tribal land back. They gave some land to the Chilean government to build a cultural centre but ... read more

South America » Chile » Easter Island » Hanga Roa August 1st 2010

Sunday 1.8.2010 day 291 Rapa Nui! (Polynesian), Easter Island! (English) Or Isla de Pascua! (Spanish), for a little island in the middle of nowhere why does it have 3 names? Easter Island is relatively small, just 117 sq km with just one small town called Hanga Roa, population 3800. The rest of the island is uninhabited except for hundreds of wild horses that roam free on the island and of course over 800 of the Moai statues that are scattered everywhere. We got up early and then went to church as I had read in our lonely planet that it is a mix of the Rapa Nui, Polynesian and Christian religion. It was very nice with lots of singing and there was a guy dresses in just a grass skirt there. We got there a bit ... read more

Friday 30.7.2010 day 289 Holiday Inn at Santiago Airport Today we checked out at 10 am and then got a resort transfer to the bus station in nearby Vin del Mar. In Vina Del Mar we then got some food supplies at the shop as we have read that the food on Easter island is very expensive and they do not have much fresh food there except for fish. As we have a kitchen in our cabin on Easter Island we are getting some food for us to cook. We then got a bus to Santiago On the way to Santiago we when though the wine fields and saw olive and fruit plantations. At the bus terminal in Santiago we got a bus to the airport where we are staying. We are staying in the Holiday ... read more
