Thanks
Nanci, thanks for all the great information. We will be flying into the Gallway area and making our way to Dublin for the last 4 days of our stay. This is not a lot of time to see Dublin, so your information is soooo helpful.

Ireland
Dave always wanted to go to Ireland but it was never near the top of my list. A year ago March we spent a month there and I can tell you we loved every minute of it. We are eager to go back!
2nd December 2015

We like it too!
I think we thought of visiting "exotic" places more than Ireland, but we're very glad we got our opportunity to stay here for a while. Its been one of our favorites!

Poolbeg Lighthouse

Really love the way you framed this shot. The "not so perfect" weather made for some excellent mood lighting!

Poolbeg Lighthouse

Thanks!
This lighthouse is at the end of a mile long jetty into Dublin Bay. It was nice blue skies when we left and by the time we got to the end of the jetty, 50 mph winds were blowing and waves were coming over the jetty. Made; ;for an exciting walk!

One of many nice photos
Nice blog entry. When reading it I realise that there are several places in Dublin we should have seen but didn't when we were there. I guess I'll have to go back some day. You have several spectacularly good photos. I pick this one as my favourite because. /Ake

Thanks, Ake!
We have seen a lot of things here that we probably would not have seen if the weather were nicer. I think we will have to come back and see all the outdoor things next time...

All roads lead to
Love this pic Nanci. Not a whiskey drinker but it does take me there! Putting it on Follow that Road thread to lead others there as well.

Thanks, Dave!
Thank you, Dave. We are really drinkers at all any more, but it's hard to not have a Guinness when you're in Dublin.....

Perfection
I love this one

The lure of Lisbon
This is a town we have always been drawn to and yet have not had time to explore yet. I love the way you spend a month in each location. Did you ever read the book, A Year with Charles Kuralt? He wrote a book about doing the same thing although all of his favorite locations were U.S. Love the terra cotta roofs. We love funiculars. Thanks for sharing.

Lisbon Allure
We have like our time here. I remember having "A Perfect Year" on my bookshelf at home and reading it several times. I never thought about it but perhaps it was an inspiration for this trip. Staying for a month in each place started as a way to stay in AirBnb places for a "discount" rate but now seems to be the perfect amount of time to explore a city. Thanks, as always, for reading and I hope all is well for you guys!

Memories of last year's vacation
Hi Dave, I really enjoyed reading this blog and especially enjoyed the pictures! I found myself reading along and frequently saying , "oh yeah" as I was reminded of places I had seen while in Lisbon. We had such a nice vacation in Portugal. The people were very friendly and helpful. I hope the rest of your time in Portugal is great and I look forward to reading about your next adventure.

Gracias, Hermana!
We really like Portugal and wish we could see more of it. We went to Sintra yesterday (which was very nice). Thanks for reading and we look forward to talking to you soon!

English, please!
I also found that many Portuguese loved to speak English, pointing out that the oldest treaty in Europe is between the English and the Portuguese. They weren't overly fond of my Spanish, since Felipe II had invaded about 400 years ago. I love the ancient hill towns, and since the country was the most affordable I'd visited in Western Europe, I do have fantasies of living there someday. I love your explorations, though maybe there won't be an end to these.

No Spanish, please!
We laughed when we saw this! Other than Bom Dia and Obrigado, we have no Portuguese at all. At times we have tried to communicate in Spanish (I have no idea why?) and kind of gotten dirty looks. I assumed that it was because we spoke so poorly, but we never thought it could be because of the "little brother" complex Portugal sometimes has with Spain. We have found that everyone (almost) speaks some English and they seem to like speaking it. No one likes speaking Spanish. Only 10 more days until we speak English again, not to give away our next destination...

Slice of Life
Thanks for sharing a taste of everyday life in your new city with its colorful neighborhoods and funiculars. How lovely to stay in the Alfama, that oldest part of town. When I was there, in my cheap hotel, I could hear fado wafting up into my room--so lovely. I wonder if the 25th of April Bridge didn't make you a little saudade for home?

Thinking of Home...
Many things in Lisbon remind us of home. The tiny trams are like cable cars, the bridge is like the Golden Gate, both cities have "7 hills", the river looks like the bay and the Castle reminds me of the Presidio. If I find a Chinatown there won't be much reason to ever go home! Thanks for reading, Tara!

Lisbon seem to be worth a visit
We did spend a few hours in Lisbon between flight once and we thought it might be worth going there for a visit. Thanks to your blog we know for sure it would be worth it. Thanks for sharing your photos and your story with us./Ake

Definitely worth a stop...
I think Lisbon is definitely worth a stop. So many things to see, There are also many things close by that we have just begun to visit. Check it out, for sure. Thanks for reading, Ake!

Neither can we
"I really can’t distinguish between Baroque, Renaissance or Gothic designs": Don't worry. I have lived in Europe almost all my life and I can't either. Well, possible I can pick out Gothic design. They have the gargoyles, right? I like gargoyles. I remember seeing a gargoyle shaped like Darth Vader once. It was sitting on a cathedral in Washington DC. /Ake

Architecture
I've made the decision to just go with Old, Really Old and Ruins as my categories from now on....ha ha! Thanks for following along and thanks for commenting Ake!

Baroque, Renaissance or Gothic
As long as the architecture brings you enjoyment I guess you don't need to be certain which is which. Riding on the bus with the curtains drawn must have made you appreciate your life all the more and knowing that you see the world at a slow pace and generally on your terms not someone else's. Ronda looks fantastic.

Words to live by for sure...
Finding enjoyment in anything is enough, there really is no reason to over explain it. I am glad I found out how little I knew about architecture because it has caused me to do a little studying! We just arrived in our new house about 20 minutes ago. Can't wait to walk around tomorrow. Thanks for reading and sharing some of your travel wisdom as always.
