Hello again: We are in the cloud forest and it definitely has cooled off. Not parka weather or anything, but much more bearable. Today we were awakened at 4:30 am by a bird or bat flinging itself into our bedroom window. It was so loud, Guy and Wendy heard it two cabins over! It's a beautiful morning and we visited the Hanging Bridges - 8 bridges connected by paths at the Cloud Forest Treetops. It is absolutely mind-boggling how many different plants, trees, flowers, ferns, mosses, bushes, etc., etc, there are. We walked slowly and enjoyed as much of it as we could take in. Guy and Wendy were looking for leaf shapes that are represented in the classroom botany materials but for which there are no species in North America. Then it was on to ... read more

Hi I'm going to try to do both days today. First I want to mention how the children are doing with Spanish. In a word... magnifico! Senorita Ordosgoitia would be so proud of them. They are listening, speaking, and translating. Only rarely does our guide have to repeat for them. And, speaking of our guide, how lucky we were. Shayla is a native of Costa Rica, speaks English, Spanish and French. She has had conversations with the children about Costa Rican politics, culture, education, history, animals, etc. She has been singing their praises, and that of their Spanish teacher. TUESDAY: Now, on to yesterday. Today we left Tortuguero by boat, which is the only way in or out. Many people left today, so there was some confusion among the guides as to which luggage went on ... read more

Good Morning All: We like hearing from those of you who have chosen to comment. Sitting outside our room at 6:00 AM. The birds are singing, the howler monkeys howling, and the crabs scuttling about. Costa Rica is awake. I'm sweating already! Had some trouble with the photos and spelling yesterday as you may have noticed. I'll try to do better today. Up and in the boat (before breakfast) by 6:00 for a river and canal tour. 6:00 AM, do you appreciate the full impact of that? Hot as Hades already. But, in for a penny, in for a pound. Saw many beautiful birds, flowers and other wildlife. (See photos). At 8:00 they brought us back for breakfast. Fruit, rice and beans, eggs and pancakes. After breakfast we got a half-hour break and then back out ... read more

Sunday 4/24 Left school at 11:15 for our adventure. Kids wide-eyed with anticipation, parents, misty-eyed with anticipation. Trip uneventful. Left our B & B for a rainy morning drive through cloud forest - different from rain forest. Cloud forest is higher and it is just - clouds - mist - duh! Passed the confluence of 2 rivers - the yellow one from a volcano, full of sulpher; the other fresh water rain run-off. We stopped for breakfast buffet, rice and beans (which is served at every meal) and quite delicious. Took the group photo for posterity. One of many. Stopped at a Del Monte banana plant. But, the interesting part of the stop was the man lopping off the tops of young coconuts and inserting a straw. Yum. It took him two well-places hits. $1.00. Yum, ... read more

Hi all This is going to be a poor excuse for a blog entry but I promise much more tomorrow. We have the afternoon free. We've taken gobs of photos. We were up at 5:30 and on the road at 6:15 this morning. Tomorrow we're up at 5:00 am and on the boat at 5:30 for 2 hours in the Tortuguero canals. It has to be 150 degrees in our rooms with no air and I can run faster than the fan turns. The humidity is unbelievable as well. Nothing dries. We're having fun and leaning a lot. The kids are great.
