This will absolutely be my last post. We are sitting in the lounge at the Melbourne airport waiting for our flight. The emu picture was from the day we saw over 100 of them. In a town called Deniliquin, Qld, we passed the American Hotel and thought we'd have to document it for Brian. And, the dinner photo was from a lovely Italian restaurant where we enjoyed dinner with Ray and Lyn on the 4th. Yesterday turned out to be an unexpected pleasure. We began by, you guessed it, re-organizing our stuff AGAIN. After breakfast at the Elders', we took the truck back. No worries other than we drove more miles than allowed. We actually drove over 13,000km, 8,000miles. Then, our tour guide, Ray, took us to see wild Black Swans (for Dante's sake). Next we ... read more

OK. So I'm addicted to blogging. We had a nice drive in from Hillston, through some absolutely beautiful country - so different from outback. Green, lush, almost manicured. Sheep and farms - real farms, where they grow things. Our friend Ray, has a friend who grows potatoes where we drove through. His farm is 23 miles long. They don't do things by half here. We stopped at an historic pub for lunch, and then planned to visit a place called Bird World. Dante has not had enough birds yet. Unfortunately, the place closed in April for 12 months of renovations. Arrived at the Elders' mid-afternoon. Those of you who encounter Riley and Dante had best get ready. They could not stop talking. And, even wanted to show photos. You'll need a couple of hours at least, ... read more

This will probably be our last post. Tomorrow night we bask in the lap of luxury with Ray and Lyn Elder. Thought we'd never be finished with Queensland. It is a very big state from top to bottom. But, tonight we're in NSW, and tomorrow in Victoria. No photos today. Dante decided to count emu sightings today, and we ultimately saw 119 of them. Riley counted kangaroos and we saw 42. We also were treated to a flock of galahs that flew in front of our truck and tried to outrun us. One hit the antenna and bent it in two. Don't know what happened to the galah. After making it to Cobar and getting lunch at Subway (can you imagine?), we headed down our next road only to find it closed. A truck overturned with ... read more

Got a late start but did get the tire fixed and put back under the truck. Then, we had to find a bolt to replace the one that vibrated loose and was no longer holding the battery in place. A nice lady at a service station interrupted her breakfast and rummaged through a box of nuts and bolts 'till she found one. Frank replaced it and we were on our way. The first thing we saw was a road train. This one didn't have cattle but giant tires and stuff. Impressive, isn't it? We must have passed about 15 to 20 today. We also saw a feral cat. Except for camels, we have seen every one of Australia's feral creatures. The impression we have of today is that of roadkill. The roads are littered with the ... read more

Oh, how far we have fallen. Only two photos today mostly because I forgot to take photos of the real events, but you will be able to imagine them. We left the tranquility of the rainforest early as we wanted to drive about 1000km today. In addition to about a dozen signs warning of cassowary on the road and their being none, we drove in heavy fog which had our speed down to about 40 kph. Then there was the expected traffic getting south of Cairns. We were connected long enough for me to post our 2 blogs while driving along, and that suddenly came to an end and did not return. Then came the dirt roads again and the attendant bumps and dust. We even had two river crossings and numerous encounters with road ... read more

We had a three minute walk to breakfast and waited 'tilll the rain let up a bit. Walked back to our room in the rain. Then it let up again, so we scurried out the door for a 5-mile walk 1.5 to get there, 1.5 miles on a boardwalk thru the rainforest, and 1.5 miles back. Riley kept asking why we didn't drive the car to the walk. Anyway, despite the absence of wildlife, we saw a couple of birds and a fish, the walk was lovely. I’ve enclosed many photos that I will let speak for themselves. It rained on and off all day, and is supposed to continue this pattern through Monday. On the way back we stopped for toasted cheese sandwiches at Mason's store. Let me put it this way. I think it ... read more

Obviolusly, we've been out of touch. But, we're back. It was a short drive (under 2 hours) from Port Douglas to our rainforest retreat at Cape Tribulation Resort and Spa. We had to cross the Daintree River by car ferry - uneventful even though the river is home to crocodiles. Our cabin wasn’t ready when we arrived, so we explored the beach at Cape Tribulation for an hour. We also visited a bat house that had only one bat! Then we had lunch. Nice place with an eclectic menu. Riley had lettuce soup and we had an appetize that was toasted, crusty bread that we dipped in olive oil and balsamic vinegar and then dipped in Egyptian spices, call dukkah. Yum, Yum! Our cabin is about 100 feet above the level of the road and quite ... read more

Our last night in Port Douglas was full of laughs. The day began with the walk from our room to the dining room. Even though I've sent lots of pictures of this resort, you can't get a sense of how complex the layout is. I have been lost the whole time. What with all the lagoons, and buildings that are not rectangular and come off as spokes on a wheel, I don't have any idea where I am. Fortunately for the family, we have had Dante, the Italian Navigator. His sense of direction is uncanny and he has kept us straight the whole time. If Frank said let's go this way, Dante would say, "well, that's the long way, and we can get there, but there's a shorter way", and invariably, he was right. Riley is ... read more

Slow day (thank goodness). It was overcast but warm. Took a few more pix of the resort as we walked to our car. The tropical foliage is breathtaking. They even have a waterfall. Guess it makes a nice background for wedding photos. We went to the Rainforest Habitat Wildlife Sanctuary. This was the nicest yet. The animals weren't tame but did their thing despite people watching, taking photos, and generally being a nuisance. The most exciting were the Jibiru storks. Male and female were tending a nest of three eggs, the first of which was laid 6 days ago. Since the deed was done, not sure what the significance of the male standing on the female's back, but it was quite a show. And, I was treated to more red-tailed black cockatoos.
