Tuesday 20th July 2010 On Monday lunchtime I got my first view of the waves breaking on the Altlantic shore near Accra - we had lunch in a little beacj restaurant just yards from the sea. On Monday evening we strolled around the Newtown area where we are staying to look for somewhere to eat. By now it was dark but the streets were just as lively as during the daytime. We eventually settled on a small fast food servery next to a TV shop. We sat at a plastic garden table whilst next door a group of locals watched TVs at the TV shop. I say TVs in the plural because there were 3 different sets on, all showing different programs - one of them was still covered in clingfilm Our first two nights were ... read more

It's 11:00am here in Accra (1 hour before UK I believe) Dorothy and I are now sitting in an Internet cafe in the OSU district. We finally got to bed about 2 o'clock this morning so it was a long day yesterday. The flight from Gatwick was delayed about 2 and a half hours. This had one benefit in that we didn't have to try and kill 3 hours in the transit lounge at Tripoli, only about half an hour. Both flights were fine (apart from being late) - I managed to watch Avatar on the second one which I hadn't seen yet. In-flight meals were OK. The main problem was the time it took for the baggage to arrive on the carousel - we spent about an hour waiting for all 4 bags to finally ... read more

First of all, apologies dear readers for the extremely brief contents of the previous posting. I also apologise for the fact that it was, like this one, posted from the UK. This disappointed some of my readers (not mentioning any names). So, this will be the last one before I go, but I thought a bit of background might be helpful. Last summer my daughter Dorothy spent 3 months volunteering at the Osu Childrens' Home in Accra. You can read her blog on here (just search for 'Dorothy' and 'Ghana'). She loved Ghana so much that she wanted to go back again this summer. Since I had enjoyed my first volunteering experience last summer, she suggested we went to Ghana together this summer. She hopes to go back into the orphanage and I will look for ... read more

O, To be in Nepal Now that t'Monsoon's there, And whoever wakes in Nepal Sees, some morning, unaware, That the Himalayan peaks round the local hills Are hidden by low-lying mists, While the cockroach sings on the bedroom floor In Nepal—now! Some reflections after getting home! This was my first visit to Nepal and I spent a bare three and a half weeks there - this blog is really directed at those who have never been to Nepal and if some of what I say is obvious, or inaccurate, to "old hands" then I apologise profusely Weather I theory I was in Nepal during the monsoon season. That season should normally be characterised by low-lying mists in the morning, hot days and wet evenings as the rain pours down. In my first week in Nepal there ... read more

Sunday 9th August I had originally intended to visit two major temples today (one Hindu and one Buddhist) but as I was up quite early and still feeling good after those two, after a short break I visited the third as well. After a lovely breakfast in the hotel roof garden, I took a taxi to Pashupatinath which is east of the city, near to the airport. This is the most important Hindu temple in Nepal and is also one of the most important temples in all Asia dedicated to Shiva. The temple complex straddles the Bagmati River, Nepal's holy river, and the site is as important to Nepalis as Varanasi on the Ganges is to Indians. Where the river flows through the temple site, Hundus come to bathe for ritual cleansing and also to cremate ... read more

Friday 7th August I had originally thought I would probably travel back to Kathmandu on the Sunday but with the school holidays giving me an extra day I booked a bus ticket for Saturday and allowed myself the Friday for a final full day in Pokhara. I wanted to go into the main town centre again to browse atround the Old Bazar area and also post a couple of English books to those kids I met in Kastikot last Saturday. At breakfast Bindhu told me that Lakeside was on strike! There would be no buses, shops, taxis etc until 6:00pm. Outside Lakeside however things were still working so I just walked as far as the picket line and then caught a bus into towm. I found the post office and sent off my parcel then had ... read more

This will be my last entry from Pokhara! On Friday I am intending to have a last visit to Pokhara town centre and to do some shopping for stuff to take home. I have booked my bus ticket back to Kathmandu for 7:00am Saturday so that will (hopefully) give me 2 full days to have a better look around Kathmandu before flying home on Tuesday. I say hopefully because there has been so much rain recently that there have ben numerous landslides and some major roads have closed temporarily - though as far as I know the Pokhara-Kathmandu road is still open. Next blog entry from Kathmandu! Tuesday 4th August My last day in school was Tuesday - the last 3 days (Wednesday to Friday) this week were another holiday which no one at the school ... read more

Thursday 30th July No school today because of the strike so I asked the POD rep (who runs a rafting & kayaking company) whether there was anything else she could use me for. She had a fairly new Nepali recruit who needed more practice with conversational English so I said I would spend a couple of hours with him. He suggested taking a couple of kayaks across the lake so I had a lovely paddle across with a free kayaking lesson. We then sat having a coffee on the other side for an hour or so and then paddled back. With the afternoon to kill as well I decided to go into the old town of Pokhara again and have a look for the Seti River. This river flows through the middle of the city but ... read more
