First off, Happy Easter to all! We hope you had a wonderful, relaxing Easter weekend and enjoyed the fantastic weather!! Here in Korea, as with most holidays we are used to celebrating, this weekend felt nothing like Easter to us! After a colder and rainier than usual March, April has brought us some warmer and sunnier weather and we could not be more thrilled!! After being cooped up for the winter months, we are anxious to get out and explore more of this beautiful country. For me, the weekend started on a sour note as just after lunch on Friday my school informed me that they needed lesson plans for both my before-school and after-school extra class for the entire semester. Only, they needed them by the END OF THE DAY! Needless to say, I was ... read more

As the rhyme goes, it should be April showers which bring us May flowers, but in Korea, it seems to be March showers (and it has rained a lotttttttt here this month) that bring the wonderous cherry blossoms in April. While Toronto has experienced the first ever March with no snow recorded, Yangsan has seen almost double the amount of rain that they are used to! What a year to choose to be out of the country. Last weekend was the 40th International Kite Flying Festival in Busan at Dadaepo Beach. We thought it might be cool to check so we gathered a group of eager foreigners and went to the beach to see the spectacle. Well, to say the Festival was exciting would be wrong. There were some cool kites, some so humongous, colourful and ... read more

This past weekend was a truly Korean experience with the annual Cheongdo Bull Fighting Festival and a tour of the persimmon Wine Tunnel. As the warm weather begins to arrive in South Korea, so too does lots of festivals and events to mark Spring! This weekend we traveled by train to the nearby city of Cheongdo for a day trip we will never forget! Before I get started on Saturday, Mike and I spent Friday night having dinner with an English teacher from his school and her family. It was awesome to eat in a Korean home (apartment) where we all sat around a tiny table on the floor and had a noodle/soup dish. Sandy, the teacher, has 3 kids, the oldest one in grade 1 and the youngest one 17 months and they are so ... read more

We had a one-day winter wonderland in Yangsan this week and it resulted in a coveted snow day for the students and some lucky teachers! All week the forecast had been calling for snow on Wednesday but when I told my co-teacher she laughed and said that wouldn't happen. Well, imagine our surprise to wake up Wednesday morning to a city covered in a layer of snow! It was exciting and we prepared for school all the same, not thinking much of the snow, until we checked out Facebook (gotta love it!) and people were saying it was a snow day!! At first I didn't believe it, but when I called Sunny, she confirmed that indeed, no school for the kids and I should "stay home and relax". No telling me twice! So as I prepare ... read more

We don't want to make it seem like we don't do any work around here, but we had the last week in February off school so we decided to make the most of the week (well, half of the week - the first half we spent watching Olympics at every possible moment - which was difficult with a 17hr time difference, but we managed to see most of the important things!) and rented a car for a little 5 day road trip with 2 friends, Eric and Moiz. We left on Wednesday morning in our shiny new Kia Forte Hybrid ready (and a little worried - I mean, Korean drivers?scaryyyyyy!) for the road ahead. We packed the trunk with all our hiking gear and hit the road with Eric and Mike alternating driving as they were ... read more

Hello everyone! We hope the winter blues aren't getting you down too much!! It's almost March and that means that Spring is around the corner, or at least we can hope! It's been relatively quiet here since our trip, just catching up with friends and getting our blue belts in taekwondo! Mike is at school currently, but my school is still off so I have been spending my days watching the Olympics and relaxing! This weekend we went out to a new foreigner-run bar in Yangsan to say goodbye to a friend, James, who is leaving Korea. We met up with another James (Ashwell) to catch a cab to this bar, and the short drive to the bar turned out to be a 30 minute affair complete with police, ambulance and blood (not ours tho, luckily!) ... read more

01/29/10 - 02/02/10 Alright folks, we are just about finished our trip! It's been a long and crazy adventure but it is about to come to a close (sadly). So here we are at 4:45am, left at an empty bus station in Luang Prabang, dirty, hungry and tireeddddd beyond belief. It was at this point that we both ready to go home or at least have a few solid days of rest. I mean, we were having an amazing time, but I think all the sleepless nights and long days had finally caught up to us, and we were exhausted. We sat at the bus station for a bit trying to gather our thoughts, check out maps to find out where we were and decide on an action plan. In hopes of saving money, we decided ... read more

01/27/10 - 01/29/10 A beautiful 4 hr drive into the mountainous regions of Laos proved to be quick and rather uneventful. We arrived in Vang Vieng (the party town of Laos) just after 5:00pm. We were determined to follow our plan in this city and get to Marilyn's Bungalows that we had researched prior to our departure from Korea. Unfortunately, with a slightly skewed and ill designed map, we managed to get a little off track and missed the last available bungalow by a mere few minutes to a pair of girls we met on our bus and had passed also looking for the mysterious bridge that crossed the river to the coveted bungalows (this bridge never did show it's face either...) So with a little disappointment but a strong wish to find a place to ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Vientiane February 9th 2010

01/26/10 - 01/27/10 Oh Vientiane... the great capital of Laos. Or maybe just the capital of Laos. For the capital of a country, Vientiane is one of the least visited capital cities. There is not a whole lot to attract tourists to the city except for the excellent ambiance and beautiful French colonial buildings and cafes. We had originally intended to spend only one day in Vientiane but the more we talked to fellow travelers along the trail, the more we discovered really how little Vientiane had (unless you have days and days to really explore the city and get a feel for it, which we didn't!) and so in the end we spent about 4 hours in the city, on foot, and we saw all the main sights and had breakfast! But first, our trip ... read more

Asia » Laos » South » Don Det February 8th 2010

01/24/10 - 01/26/10 Welcome to the next chapter in our wild adventures! What will go wrong this time? What great sights will we encounter? Read on to see! On January 24th we were picked up at 4:50am by a tuk-tuk to bring us to the bus station where we would board a minibus to Kampong Cham province then change to a VIP bus to bring us all the way to Laos. In Laos we were staying in the area of the 4000 Islands, specifically the island of Don Det. The 4000 Islands is so-named because in the dry season the Mekong dries up a bit and reveals 4000 islands (or little tiny bits of land). There are 3 main islands where tourists go and we stayed on the smallest of the 3 (also the most popular ... read more
