Sunday evening and an interesting couple of days but for all the wrong reasons. My flight from Hong Kong was with Ethiopian Airways, continuing on from Bangkok to Addis Ababa. I wasn’t expecting much and I wasn’t disappointed. When I saw the state of the cabin, I just hoped that they had spent a bit more on maintaining the engines than on the interior. The flight was absolutely crammed full – probably workers heading home from Hong Kong for the holidays. The amount of luggage some of the Africans rolled up with was unbelievable and there was a sign at check-in to warn them of a 5 bag maximum. I had just the one bag – and they left it behind in Hong Kong. Yes, the moment every traveler dreads: you’re standing by the carousel when ... read more

I’m starting out with the best of intentions – to write the blog as often as I can. That could turn out to be a hollow promise: it depends how much time I have and what sort of Internet connections I find in Laos. The trip I’m taking is to Laos with Explore, starting and ending in Bangkok, with 17 days on the road. I’m flying to Hong Kong, then back to Bangkok to start the tour. Early in January, I’ll fly back to Qatar on business (sadly not in business) and finally back to the UK around January 12th. So – the Hong Kong flight. All I can say is, thank goodness that’s over! Everything considered I was probably lucky to escape yesterday. For a start the flight out of Heathrow was delayed by about ... read more

Africa » Libya » Tripoli April 6th 2010

So here I am in Libya! It's certainly different to anywhere else I've been but also strangely familiar. In appearance I would compare it to some of the Gulf capitals although obviously not Dubai. Possibly more like Abu Dhabi or Muscat 10 years ago. That's not much help if you've not visited either of those is it? OK, mostly low rise, some concrete blocks of apartments, lots of mad traffic. All the cars are Japanese and fairly beaten up. There is an old market right in the centre which has been partly renovated and in any other Middle Eastern capital would be thronged with tourists. Here it was more common to be the only western face in the crowd. The tradesmen are not pushy at all, in fact the exact opposite of next door neighbour Egypt. ... read more

Sorry no time for photos - check back and I'll add some later. Quite a lot has happned in the last few days but we’vr been out of touch with the rest of the world, so no chance of Internet connections. So - time for a very quick resume and then I’ll check out the facilities at our final resort. It’s New Years Eve now and we travelled most of today to reach Kovalam which is right in the south of Kerala, quite near to Trivandurum. But in reverse order.... On Wednesday night we stayed on a houseboat in the backwaters of Kerala. Think Norfolk Broads, ten times bigger, hot, sunny and full of palm trees. It’s a mixture of rivers, canals and lakes, all linked together with housres, palm trees and rice paddies lining the ... read more

Christmas Day was a travelling day and we left Madurai at 9 am. Not much time to open presents which was OK because Santa didn’t call anyway. Perhaps he was running late, or in a hurry! On Thursday evening we had our special inclusive hotel buffet along with some local entertainers. They were a motley looking bunch probably rejected by the local circus. There was very loud music from a bugle and a drum, a few balancing tricks, some half hearted dancing, then the highlight - leaping through a fiery hoop. Oh well, they tried. Perhaps with a bit more rehearsal Simon Cowell might take them onboard. Following that excitement we drove back to the temple to see the ceremony where Shiva is put to bed for the night. His “remains” are carried through the temple ... read more

Asia » India » Tamil Nadu » Madurai December 24th 2009

Thursday afternoon now which means it’s Christmas Eve. We’re in Madurai, heading west from the previous stop in Tanjure. Everyone is starting to get temple fatigue now so it’s probably a good job that this is our last day of temple visits. To be fair, those we’ve seen in the last couple of days have been pretty spectacular. The facts and figures have started to wash over my head because I’m sure the last two towns have both claimed that they have the biggest, tallest or most towers. I think they’re all trying to compete for their place in the Guinness Book of Records! We arrived yesterday afternoon after driving from Tanjure via Trichy. On the way we visited (you guessed it) another temple. That one had seven separate sections accessed through gateways or arches. The ... read more

It’s proving harder than usual to find an Internet connection so reports from India could be few and far between this time! I think it’s Monday evening now (I’m sure about the evening part, so I haven’t completely lost it). Still, since this is the first report, I’d better start at the beginning. The flight was early on Friday morning. And I do mean early - 5 to 8 take off from Heathrow. I had a taxi booked from home for 4:45 but seeing how the snow was predicted for early Friday, I changed plans late on Thursday afternoon, found a cheap room near the airport and got on the half seven train instead. That worked out OK: I got a reasonable night sleep before the flight and left the Holiday Inn at 6 am for ... read more

Middle East » United Arab Emirates » Dubai November 20th 2009

I first visited Dubai longer ago than I care to remember. Well actually I can't remember the year but I vaguely recollect that Emirates launched that year with a single second hand plane. According to wikipedia that was October 1985 so it must be true. Wherever possible we took the British Caledonian, Hong Kong flight which had a refuelling stop in Dubai. It was always cheaper and less crowded than BA and used modern DC-10's (all long since scrapped I'm sure). The airport at the time was single runway, single terminal, with only a handful of planes on the tarmac most of the time. One thing which sticks in my mind is stepping out of the aircraft cabin to walk down the steps for the first time and being hit in the face by the heat ... read more

Europe » Slovakia » Bratislava Region October 3rd 2009

So, after just a few weeks I'm heading back to Bratislava. It will probably only be for a few days and because I don't know exactly what to expect, I've decided to travel early so I can be raedy bright and early on Monday morning. Plus, it gives me a chance to get there by a slightly different route and take a quick look at Vienna along the way. I noticed last time that there are three ways to get from Vienna to Bratislava: bus, train or boat. The bus is fast and easy from Vienna airport (but I've done that before). So, how about the ferry? Well, there are two - a slow boat and a shiny new hydrofoil. Surprise surprise, I chose the latter. It's called the Twin City Liner and takes 75 minutes ... read more

Middle East » Qatar » Doha July 9th 2009

And so, week 5 on the road and I seem to have landed in Qatar. Actually not quite five weeks, I think I got a few days at home but it just didn’t work out. I kept leaving my laundry in a bag, ready for collection but honestly, the service was rubbish. Or perhaps I’m jinxed - the hotel here managed to lose my trousers for a day and I had to wear shorts to the office. A drop in standards I know but I think I can be excused - it did reach 42C yesterday. The flight out was uneventful and great value at £340. See, I still try and get value for money, even when it’s not my money (wish the boss was reading this). I really don’t mind taking a short break and ... read more
