scholarships College scholarships typically go to students with enviable academic accolades, or a diverse palate of extracurricular activities, or demonstrated financial need.
They go to teens who write compelling personal essays, or have disadvantaged backgrounds, or are members of a particular organization or ethnic group. But some scholarships don't have any of these restrictions – they are awarded every year via a completely random lottery system, with no strings attached and only a minimal application process.learn more here....

A new career possibility An ear cleaner? If only I had known that was a profession. But now I am old and the learning curve for ear cleaners is most likely very steep. I love reading your blog--Glad you are having such a wonderful time.
spice Someone was telling me today about the spice of Chengdu. They said it's a really "hot" spice made from red flowers? Do you know what it is? Could you get some and bring it back with you?
"because we had no idea what size/amount to order. "
to order Jiaozi, 4 liangs(两) should be enough for one person.
1斤(Jin) = 10两, 1两 = 50g.
you can just say: "siliang jiaozi, buyao niurou"
Visit I talked to Dad on the phone yesterday and he was so impressed with how well you are learning Chinese and have adapted to life there. I love and miss you and really wish I could go visit too. We will have to go together and you can show me all over at some point.
Love you lots!!!

It's only going to work As a fellow English speaker who spent time abroad in an Asian country, I can understand your frustration at the lack of chances you get to speak the native language to native listeners.
Here's my advice:
When someone comes up to you and asks, "can I practice my English?" respond in Chinese. "Sure - if I can practice my Chinese with you. Let's make it 50/50." And if your Chinese is suffering and making it hard to make a 50/50 conversation, then speak as much Chinese as you can. The people who want to practice English with you will probably be the most patient and willing to help you learn Chinese.
Go to the international student department and ask about clubs or programs they have for non-native speakers. My Uni had a program called conversation partners, where international students were matched up with similar U.S. students.
Good luck!
The Panda Conservatory Hi Laura, I can't wait to read your blog after you visit the Panda conservatory. And, it has been a long time since I have made jiaozi. When you are home, we should have a jiaozi making party at Chinese New years.
I really enjoyed your article in the Bonney Lake Courier Herald. Jacob took it in to school to share with his 3rd grade class. The teacher read the article to the class and had to explain what yaks are.
Keep up the great writing! I'm glad you are having a good time and get to experience so much.
I am an East Asian Studies and Studio Art major at Lewis & Clark College, studying abroad in Chengdu, China during the Fall 2010 semester.... full info
