An Update on Red Banners

I have one!

I found a row of printing shops on the way back from the subway station, and a few of them print red banners. I came up with a sentence, stopped in at one on the way back from the noodle man last week, and ordered a banner. It was as simple as that.

My banner says: Welcome to my cold, shabby hovel. That may sound ridiculous to you, because you aren't in my Culture and Society class. But when Chinese people welcome guests into their homes, they traditionally disparage their own home and children and food, etc. So my Culture and Society teacher always says, in his crazy voice, "Welcome to my cold, shabby hovel. This is my worthless son..." So I am going to hang it in my dorm room at Lewis & Clark.

I picked it up yesterday. At first I didn't think I would be able to find the shop because there are so many that look similar, but I remembered that the sign in front had a character in the word "art," so I found that. The women inside knew what I wanted before I even said anything. They hadn't been in the shop when I ordered the banner, but I guess an American ordering a red banner that says something absolutely ridiculous would be something to talk about.
