After leaving Hoi An we spent the next 5 days or so in Nha Trang chilling out on the beach. Unfortunately when we arrived in Nha Trang we realised our camera and a phone were no longer with us, due to them being stolen from our big bags in the hotel! So we have no photos from here, how ever we did get 5 days of sunshine to improve our tans and sample a bit of windsurfing which was good fun. We then left here on another sleeper bus (hopefully our last) to Saigon also known as Ho Chi Minh City. We did not spend to long here, but managed to get ourselves a new camera before visiting the near by Ci Chu Tunnels. The tunnels were dug by the Viet Cong during the vietnam war ... read more

Asia August 22nd 2010

We arrived in Hue after another 14hr sleeper bus journey from Hanoi, we're still not getting used to them! After checking in and having a spot of lunch we set off to have a look around the Citadel. It was a really hot day and made walking there hard work so by missing the main entrance we ended up walking around the full wall of the site before even getting inside which we could have done without. The next disappointment came when we realised that it wasn't even that ancient of a Citadel and was only completed in 1830 and most of it had been destroyed during wars and had been rebuilt as late as 1997. The next day we caught the bus on to our next destination after exhausting the tourist attractions of Hue in ... read more

We had booked a 3 day trip to Halong Bay through our hostel in Hanoi which started with a 3hr journey to the coast where we met the rest of our group. We then boarded the boat which took us across to the islands. When we arrived at the boat the weather wasn't looking too good around the islands but luckily by the time we arrived the sun was back out and we were able to enjoy the scenery. After lunch on the main boat we were taken across to some caves on one of the islands, which were a bit disappointing but the view from the entrance made it worth the hike. The guide seemed to enjoy showing us the rock formations that apparently looked like animals. The next activity turned out to be a ... read more

Arriving in Vang Vieng was a relief after a journey that took us through the mountains of Laos, with the odd obstruction ranging from children to buffalo to goats and pigs, often chilling in the middle of the road. After finding some where to stay we soon found some where to eat over looking the river. The next day was tubing day, we had a leisurely morning drinking pineapple shakes (our new fave drink) and then collected our tubes. Tubing involved taking a tuk tuk to a point 3 km up the river from town and then getting into the river with your rubber ring (tube) then floating back to town, whilst having many opportunities to stop of at one of the many bars/huts that lined the river. As soon as we had been dropped of ... read more

Asia August 9th 2010

After leaving Chiang Mai we took the bus up to the border at Chiang Khong ready to take the slow boat the next day. The slowboat took us on a two day trip along the Mekong River through to Luang Prabang. The first day was a little uncomfortable sat on the straight backed wooden benches even with the cushions they sell you before boarding. The next day we had a stroke of luck and got to sit on some bags of rice that were piled up at the back of the boat. It doesn't sound much better but it gave us much more space and a better view over the river. After 2 full days on the river we finally arrived in Luang Prabang where we immediately noticed how much nicer and relaxed it was than ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Chiang Mai August 3rd 2010

After spending two nights in Sukhothai looking around the ancient ruins, we then travelled up north to chiang mai. The following day we set of on our three day trekk into the jungle, the first stop however was to ride on some more elephants, which was scarier then last time as it was really muddy and we had to go up a steep hill on the elephant, so we wobbling about all over the place, but good fun. In the afternoon we started walking to the village we were staying at that night. The walking started of very steep and very hard, which was a bit of a shock to the system, but we got to see some great scenery. The village we stayed at was really basic but this was to be expected, after the ... read more

After our first two days in Bangkok we set off on our first tour. This took us to the floating market in Damnoen Saduak, here we had some strange fruit and coconut milk for breakfast. We then took a boat ride around the canals near the floating market. We were then taken to see the River Kwai along the way here we saw a little baby tiger in a cage he was cute and had a funny little growl. After some lunch they took us on the death railway where health and safety is not an issue as we were allowed to hang out the door! That night we stayed on a floating house which was far better than our previous accomodation although it was still pretty basic but a good experience. Met some friendly aussies ... read more

Hello everyone :) We made it safely to bangkok, found the guest house late last night, which turns out to be more like a cell than a guest house as we have no windows!!! and lots of writing on the walls... After checking in we took our first walk down khaosan Road, was very busy and full of street sellers. we bought 2 pad thais with egg and chicken and three spring rolls for 105 baht (just over two pounds) then we went back to the cell for a shower and bed. Today (thurs) we went to find breakfast and instead ended up at a travel agents booking the next 2 weeks of travel tours up to northern thailand and into laos. Our first tuk tuk ride took us to the standing gold buddha and the ... read more
