“To my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted.” - Bill Bryson

Bruges So our last night in Bruges we ate some tapas, and Caitlin had some Grimbergen and Bruges beer. Being sick, I decided to take the night off from tasting, which was awful considering the surrounding. I will definitely return to Bruges at some point. The town is beautiful, there is no crime, and everything is walkable. We left Bruges for Amsterdam around 8:30 the next morning, arriving at the Eden Amsterdam American Hotel four trains later. Apparently track maintenance is a common thing, and they just let you know once you are actually on the train. Our planned naps on the train were cut short by trying to figure out what train we were supposed to be on at what time. Highlights of Bruges: Christs Blood (just off the Burg) Grimbergen/Bruges Beer Ice Cream (a ... read more

End of France We went out of France with a bang. The second night we met with some people I studied in Madrid with. We had some warsteiner in a mug marked as 'Formidable' in french, it was basically a full liter of beer after which we went to the champ de elysees (sp?) and went to a club where beers were 15 euros. Needless to say, I only had one, and I only paid for it because I had no idea how much it cost until I received 5 euros back from my 20. Dinner was next to the Eiffel Tower on theon Seine River. Probably the best wine and steak I have had this far on this trip. The next day we did some siteseeing, things such as the orangerie, the Louve, Napoleon's grave, ... read more

Where am I The short answer to that question is, no where close. I have received some emails about my absence from this blog, so here is another entry! Internet was rather expensive in London, so we spent those extra pounds on some English ales, but more on that later. I am currently sitting in my hotel in Paris, after a nice day of siteseeing. Tonight Caitlin and I are meeting a friend we went to school with who is from Paris, and possibly a couple of my classmates. Tomorrow is our last day here, and then we are off to Belgium for a day in Brussels, and two nights in Bruges. The rest of London So London is a pretty interesting city. Westminster seems to be running out of room to stuffy bodies, and I ... read more

An Update So I have been pretty busy over the past week. In brief, Friday we went out in Madrid, Saturday we went to El Escorial and the Irish Rover, Sunday to Toledo, Tuesday to the Prado, Wednesday to a bullfight (where the matador in the sixth match lost to the bull...), and Thursday to Flamenco, and then out in Madrid. This morning (6:30am local time) I left for London from Madrid. So in short, that is alot. On top of that I had class, and my presentation on strategy for Ryanair was also due. From a class perspective, we went to the US Chamber of Commerce in Madrid, which was enthralling, and also went to Boeing Europe. The Lithuanian Friday night, after some good tapas and a few cervezas, we were headed home; that is ... read more

Photos For you non facebook folks, I uploaded 17 pictures and they should be attached to this post. The other 250 pictures I took are on facebook, so for a full account of each city, go there. The pictures are from Lisbon and Madrid. Sights include places mentioned in previous posts. Plaza Mayor Last night myself and a few of my classmates met with my sister's friend from Ireland at the Plaza Mayor. Good times were had all around. The plaza mayor at night is a wonderful site, and it is so huge that it does not seem crowded. We walked away from the plaza mayor, through the plaza san angel, and that is where my familiarity with the city ended. We closed the bar down and headed out onto the streets of Madrid. The sight ... read more

Palacio Royal So I travelled back to the time without cell phones, and got burned. Actually Europeans had cell phones well before Americans, but I am just too cheap to by one, and anyway, who would I call?? After class concluded on Tuesday, we made a group trip to see the Palacio Royal in Madrid. Long story short, the group was separated. Enter a cultural challenge. Two of us, who speak limited spanish are trying to find the rest of the group. It just so happened I was with the professor of the class, and the other 12 people were somewhere in Madrid. No cell phone, just a map and logic. We had been separated at the Guzman al Bueno metro stop. After a solid 2 miles of walking around the biggest palace I have ever ... read more

The last few days (Warning: I didn't look up any spellings for this post.....) So I have been absent since my initial post, yet I have been very busy thus far on my trip. I believe I have walked at least 30 miles in the last three days, and my legs would most likely agree with that estimate. So far I have been to Lisbon, Madrid and the Palacio Royal in Aranjuez (the one in Madrid is tomorrow). Lisbon Upon arrival at the Lisbon Airport at 4:00 pm local time, I had no problems finding a taxi, getting to my hotel (Turim Lisboa, very very nice..), and hitting the showers. I contacted the people I knew who were staying in Lisbon, and so the trip begins. I started out in the sailors quarters, seeing some things ... read more

London says it is noon, I say it is 6:00 am Yesterday I left for Portugal at 6:30 - on an entirely different set of flights than I originally booked. Upon arriving at the St. Louis Regional Airport (some may call it Lambert), the representative for US Airways knew exactly who "Mr. Clark" was, and said he was expecting me. Now at first, I must admit, I figured he had gotten wind of my recent achievements and that is how he knew me. However, it was actually because my flight leaving St. Louis was not even close to being on time, which would leave me stranded in Philadelphia since I would miss my connection to London. No worries however! (So he said...) They found out this information prior to my arrival and had rerouted my flights, ... read more

Still at work... My flights for Portugal leaves in: I just finished a long, full, productive day at work. Tomorrow I leave for a month in Europe! A nice long break, with some international studies goes a long way... I will be visiting Lisbon, and spending some time with friends there before moving onto Madrid (via night train) until May 29th. While in Madrid I will be taking IB596 - Case Studies in the European Union. This class satisifes a portion of my Master's requirements, in a fun way. I plan on using this blog as a way to track my thoughts while I travel, and also as a way to keep friends and family informed on where I am. If the blog posts stop, I have most likely taken up residence in that country and ... read more
