Ola, We arrived at the bus station in Puno at 5am, and there we ran into Kat and Tom from Inca Trail fame. They were off to Copacabana and were going to be on the same bus as us and Belinda. The trip was with Tour Peru, a company that we were very happy with and would thoroughly recommend. The journey was spectactular as it was along side the tranquil, blue water of Lake Titicaca. The bus arrived at the turnoff to Copacabana and stopped and they offloaded everyone heading in that direction into collectivos, little mini-buses, in order to take them the rest of the way to the border. We can only assume that they had to pick up some other form of transportation once they crossed the border but we are not entirely sure ... read more

South America » Peru » Puno » Lake Titicaca » Uros Island October 3rd 2010

Ola, Well, it finally happened. We arrived early at a destination!!! 45 minutes early no less!!! However, that 45 minutes early meant that it was 415am when we made it to Puno on the shores of lake Titicaca in southern Peru. We were able to get cab to Bothy Hostel, where security let us in and was kind enough to let us crash in a room, even though we hadn't booked for that night. We got a few hours sleep, and then were treated to an excellent pancake breakfast on the roof, something that we also did not have to pay for. The hostel iotself wasn't the nicest, but what was lacking in paint was made up for in service. Belinda, Val and Peter then were taken to the docks where we went out to Uros. ... read more

South America September 23rd 2010

Buenos Dias, So after our arduous bus journey and the debacle with the protestors, we made it to Cusco. The city is located at 3300 metres above see level, but Valerie and Peter are both becoming increasingly used to the high altitude now so it's not really affecting them. Cusco used to be the capital of the Inca Empire. The surviving stone work, that the conquistadors did not steal in order to build their houses and churces, is incredible. There are large stone blocks everywhere, fitted together perfectly without the use of any mortar what so ever. A lot of the buildings consist of these blocks for their lower walls and it is amazing to see how structurally intact they are, especially with Cusco's history of earthquakes. We were exhausted after our bus ride so we ... read more

South America » Peru » Arequipa » Arequipa September 19th 2010

Ola, We arrived in Arequipa, southern Peru, to a beautiful sunrise. After getting off the bus, we booked our transport to our next destination and the cabbed into the city to our hostel called Hostel Sol de Oro. We had some food and then headed into the old town. Once again, the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site but, unlike Quito, Arequipa deserves its title. Most of the buildings in the old town are at least 300 years old and they are built of sillar, which is a white volcanic rock that glistens in the sunlight. Our first stop in town was the Monasterio de Santa Catalina. It is a huge convent with many beautiful courtyards, buildings and passageways. We were both pleasantly surprised with it and spent almost two and a half hours there! ... read more

South America » Peru » Ica » Nazca » Nazca Lines September 18th 2010

Buenos dias, So we went to be early in order to be up in time for the 4am bus to Nasca. We set both of our alarms to make sure that we would wake up in time and not miss the bus. Peter rolled over and checked his watch during the night to find out that it was 422am and they had indeed missed the bus. Frantically, Val and Peter scrambled out of bed and talked to the hostel staff as well as the employee who had booked the bus tickets and the overflight of the Nasca lines. We would have to catch the next bus out to Nasca, arriving at 1pm and she would try to see if our flight could be rescheduled for later in the day after our new arrival time. We managed ... read more

South America » Peru » Lima » Lima » Miraflores September 15th 2010

Ola, First off, we apologize for the pun. It was Val's idea. It wasn't actually Val's idea, but she is still asleep currently and can't defend herself so for the moment, it was Val's idea. We survived the 24 hourbus ride, which actually turned into a 26 hour bus ride before we had arrived in Lima. The road through southern Ecuador passed through manay banana plantations that stretched for as far as the eye could see. The border was fairly straight forward on the Ecuadorian side, but a little more interesting on the Peruvian side. We entered the town where the border was, but there was a market blocking the road so we had to take back alleys and side streets, in a massive bus, until we could get on the bridge that went over the ... read more

South America » Ecuador » North » Quito » Historical Center September 11th 2010

Ola, We are in Quito now. We flew out of Bogota, again, and it was painless once more. Aero Republica and El Dorado airport have treated us fairly well so far this trip! We arrived in Quito and there modern airport but Peter and Val both got differing entry stamps so it is going to be interesting to see if either of them have any problems exiting the country. We´ll keep you posted on that front. We got into town late and went to bed around midnight so we didn´t see much before the morning. Peter woke up first, because some lovely Germans decided that it was necessary to rustle incessantly at 630am! He went up stairs and was instantly blown away by the view over the city. From the rooftop terrace, one can see the ... read more

South America » Colombia » Leticia » Rio Yavari, Amazon September 9th 2010

Buenos Tardes, We arrived in Leticia without any issues. Fortunatly, the humidity wasn´t as bad as Cartagena, but it was still over 30 degrees there! Upon landing, we were surprised with an arrival tax that is only applicable to tourists. They horde you off and you have to take a separate entrance and pay or you cannot enter the country. We went into town where we could pick up a bus to take us 11km along the 28km road to nowhere. The road is in very good conditions, but stops at the jungle after 28km for no apparent reason. We stopped at the 11km mark because our accomodation Omshanty was there. We met the owner of Omshanty, Enrique, who is a Basque biologist but would not be out of place at a Lamb of God concert ... read more

South America » Colombia » Bogota September 7th 2010

Buenos dias, We arrived in Bogota from Cartagena without any issues and we went to check in for our next flight to Leticia. During check in, things were taking a while so we began to get a little worried. Apparently, only three of the four domestic flights we had booked in Canada before we had left home were still running. Apparently, there aren´t any flights to Leticia on ANY airline on Mondays or Tuesdays because ¨the runway doesn´t function¨ on those days. Seriously. What the hell?!?!? Do they fold it up and use it as a field for grazing on those days??? Anyways, after much unnecessary stress, Aero Republica were able to book us on to their next available flight to Leticia, which was two days later on Wednesday. However, that still left us with two ... read more

South America » Colombia » Cartagena September 4th 2010

Ola, After almost 24 hours worth of travelling, we arrived in Colombia. The flights were ok, long but ok but neither of us got much sleep on them except for passing out due to shear exhaustion. We arrived in Cartagena, which is in northern Colombia on the shore of the Carribean Sea, to a beautiful pink sunset. We went past the city walls, past some psychedelic neon party busses and were dropped off at Casa Viena, the hostel that we would be staying at for the duration of our time in the city. The hostel is nice enough, but we have a lot of street noise and the a/c, which is a fan, isn´t cutting it! It´s 28 degrees with 8 million percent humidity here!!! We wandered around the old town, which is very brightly coloured ... read more
