The road into Lorella Springs Wilderness Park, although only 29 km, was a bit off the Savannah Way route that we were travelling on. However, Mark had been in touch with the station owners who had been very helpful regarding the condition of Nathan River Road and had also made it sound like a nice place to spend a night or two, especially with the thought of warm thermal springs at the campground. The drive in was a bit bumpy with a few small creek crossings, but nothing too bad and it was definitely worth the effort when we arrived at the campground, which had lots of shady sites spread out along both sides of the creek with fire places - i.e. more camp oven cooking. We set up camp, had lunch and then drove the ... read more

On our 12 month 'OZ Trip' around Australia from June 2008 to 2009, we had only reached as far north as Cooktown in Queensland as we had run out of time to make a worthwhile trip to the tip of Cape York. On the way home to Darwin we had also wanted to travel up through the proposed Limmen National Park, located between Borroloola and Roper Bar in the NT, but two shredded tyres near Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) National Park and Wollogorang made this too risky, so we had travelled back on the tarmac instead. As it turns out, we have been invited to one of Alex's best friend's 40th birthday party being held at their holiday house on Magnetic Island during the July school holidays. So we decided to kill three birds with one stone, ... read more

We undertook the overnight bus trip from Nha Trang to Hoi An with a bit of trepidation. We had originally thought we'd take the train, but it turned out that it was going to be a bit awkward to catch and as far as we could work out, the train didn't stop at Hoi An but instead you had to catch it to Danang and then back-track in a bus or taxi to Hoi An. It also meant we would have had to get up at some ridiculous hour to catch it from Nha Trang. So we ended up on the night or sleeping bus, which consisted of 3 rows of reclining double decker seats separated by 2 narrow aisles. At the back of the bus, however, there was a row of 5 seats altogether. It ... read more

We again caught an open bus trip from Dalat to Nha Trang (6 hours), the beach capital of Vietnam (according to Lonely Planet). Unfortunately, it wasn't beach weather as this part of the east coast is exposed to the winter monsoon (onshore northeasterly flow) at this time of year. As well as this, there was a tropical disturbance in the South China Sea, which only added to the overcast conditions with intermittent showers occurring during our stay. We stayed at a small and friendly family-run place, Phong Lan Orchid Hotel, located up a little alley just a couple of blocks from the beach. Since it was his birthday, Mark got to choose the restaurant and opted for Le Petit Bistro. Although the main meals were yummy, the pièce de résistance was the chocolate mousse we had ... read more

We took another bus trip from Mui Ne up into the central highlands to Dalat. The bus went via Phan Thiet and Di Linh, which was meant to be quicker than other buses which generally travel via the coastal road to Phan Rang and then inland up to Dalat. Whether it was quicker or not is debatable, but it meant we didn't have to travel the same road twice, as we planned to travel the road from Dalat to Phan Rang on our way to Nha Trang. The afternoon trip took about 4 to 5 hours with the road quite mountainous for much of the way. We checked into our hotel (Trung Cang) which we had pre-booked from Mui Ne. We ate dinner at the nearby V Café which advertised a “taste of the blues”. Although ... read more

We took a bus from Ho Chi Minh via Phan Thiet to the beachside resort town of Mui Ne on the southeast coast of Vietnam. This part of the coast is orientated such that it is sheltered from the northeasterly winter monsoon and we experienced fine and sunny conditions during our stay. We had booked ahead while in Ho Chi Minh and stayed at Canary Beach Resort, the most luxurious place we stayed at while in Vietnam, with a buffet breakfast included in the price. The bus trip took about 5 hours. We spent the rest of the afternoon on the white sandy beach or by the pool. For dinner we walked down the road to a local café and had barbecued prawns and fish with salad. They reckon about 1 in 4 tourists will catch ... read more

We took a 2-day tour from Ho Chi Minh to the Mekong River Delta, with an overnight stay in Can Tho. It included a boat trip out to the islands where we visited a coconut candy factory and bee factory and sampled the honey wine. We had lunch on Unicorn Island which we arrived at in smaller dugout canoes needed to travel along the narrow canals. For lunch we had a Mekong River speciality - Elephant Ear Fish with rice paper rolls and vegetables. It was delicious. The next day we travelled up the river to the Cai Rang floating markets, the biggest floating markets in the Mekong Delta and then travelled in the tour bus back to Ho Chi Minh where we stayed another night.... read more

We cleared customs in Darwin without any dramas and hopped on the 5-hour Jetstar flight to Ho Chi Ming City (Saigon), arriving around 9:30 pm. We had a booking for 4 nights at the An An hotel in District 1 and so were centrally located. The 'family room' was really just a 'deluxe' room (queen and single beds) with an extra single mattress on the floor. On our first day there, we decided to see some of the sights of Ho Chi Minh, including getting ripped off by a taxi driver on the way to the War Remnants Museum (which was an eye opener for Annelies and Thomas), visited the Notre Dame Cathedral and Post Office, went for a ride on a cyclo (ripped off again!), and dodged the traffic on our walk back to the ... read more

From Adels Grove we drove north through station country to re-connect with the Savannah Way. It was nice country and the track was in good condition with only a couple of shallow creek crossings. We rejoined the Savannah Way just east of Doomadgee and continued heading west to Hells Gate, where we stopped for lunch. The road house at Hells Gate only sells emergency fuel, but we had enough to get through to Borroloola. They still allow camping here and the friendly lady let us use their facilities to have our lunch and just asked us not to feed the cattle!. Afterwards, we drove the 60 kilometres to the Qld/NT border and stopped to take photos. It was good to be back in the Territory after almost 12 months on the road. We passed by the ... read more

On Saturday we headed out fairly early as we had a long drive to Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) National Park via Burketown, Gregory Downs, and Adels Grove. About 30 kilometres out of Normanton, we stopped to have a look at the Burke and Wills - Camp 119, the most northerly camp of the fateful Burke and Wills expedition of 1860/61, which we found very interesting. Further along The Savannah Way , we also stopped to have a look at Leichardt Falls. The gravel road from Normanton to here was in good nick as it had recently been graded. To view Leichardt Falls we had to take a short track along Leichardt Creek, but it was only a couple of hundred metres off the main road - the falls weren't visible from the main road so it would ... read more
