Ok so here I am sitting in the lobby of the place I am staying taking advantage of the free wi-fi. I am in Sydney and have been back here for a week. How I love this city it scares me how much I like it and that I could quite easily pack up my life back in the UK and live here. That is if I could get proper work. What lured me here was an election and the campaign junkie that I am means I am once again on the campaign trail. Enjoying that - more of that another time. Althought that pretty much truncates my blog as that is all I have really done since I arrived. I lie I finished off the National Maritime Museum, have had far too much to drink ... read more

Ok I know it's been a while since I have updated. I have largely spent the last three weeks sitting on my arse doing not so much. Well that's a lie I have learnt to sand board, tasted the lovely wines of the Yarra Valley and have spent a lot of time job hunting. Melbourne has been a Dr Jekyll and Hyde city for me - the big plan at the start was to get here and find work. That's not been so easy. I have been looking for work in temping and office work and bad timing has hit again. This time last year the market was booming and I would have picked up work pretty easily. Not this year - add that to the fact that Victoria has had the worst summer on record. ... read more

Hello all - I have finally arrived in Melbourne in the hunt for a job. In the last week I have headed down to Melbourne with Chris and Mic, said goodbye to Chris and Mic, got very wet on the Great Ocean Road and had a roast dinner (who would have thought I would miss a good old roast but there you are). My first impressions of Melbourne weren't particularly positive and it seemed initially that it would struggle to live up the glamour and hype of Sydney. Melbourne tries harder - great public transport, modern buildings and facilities and even some vaguely historic buildings thrown into the mix. Sydney is brash and loud, Melbourne is a little more understated and I think will take a lot of getting used to. We explored the arcades in ... read more

So Cyclone Yasi is rapidly approaching the coast of Northern Queensland. It is likely to be a category 4 (pretty serious we're told) and is due to hit land late tomorrow night early Thurs. Unfortunately for us this was when we were due to be out on a boat somewhere over the Great Barrier Reef. So plans will have to change. Obviously this is a lot more serious for the folks of Cairns and surrounds. Queensland seems to be suffering a lot and is certainly in no mood for a sack load more of rain. We were lucky as we have been able to cancel our trip with minimal disruption I only hope Cyclone Yasi proves to be a damp squib so to speak. Over the last few days we have lounged around largely enjoying the ... read more

So camping. I survived. Ok my back hurts, my hip hurts and I have reached a new level of acceptable hygiene. But apart from that all is good! On the first day of our road trip up the coast we headed to Newcastle, a town that Lonely Planet has named one of the top ten places to visit for 2011. I think though that they may have been confused with our very own Newcastle-upon-Tyne, which apart from the weather is in my view a much more happening and fun place to be. Arriving at 4.30pm we were met with a town that was pretty much closed so we had to hit the road to find somewhere to sleep for the night finally ending up at a family campsite in Swansea just south of Newcastle. Ok but ... read more

Just a quick update before I head off up the coast. I have spent the last couple of days in Sydney and the Blue Mountains. On Monday we hit the road for a wander around the Blue Mountains. Well they are very blue, apparently due to the mist given off by the Eucalyptus trees. I also discovered that I hadn't quite gotten used to the spiders yet. Stopping at Wentworth Falls for the view and a rest stop I was unable to use the female bathrooms due to the propensity of large evil looking eight-legged beings - resulting in poor Michal having to check the disabled loo for any signs of life before I could pee and boy did I pee fast. We are off camping today I feel that I may struggle somewhat so watch ... read more

I have now been in Sydney for 4 days and am enjoying my stay. Chris and Mic dutifully met me at the airport and we started to plan our three weeks together. The Harbour Bridge and the Opera House do live up to expectations. We went on a Free Tour www.imfree.com.au - this is basically a three hour tour of the city centre - at the end you tip what you think the tour was worth. Result. Our guide was a bonafide Sydneysider and really knew his stuff. We now have a list as long as your arm of free stuff to do (Chris was very happy). One such free thing was last night where we were able to listen to Los Lobos at the main park. You may know them for their hit "La Bamba" ... read more

So yesterday morning the earth moved but not in the way you would hope. At 7.03am an earthquake measuring 4.3 shook Napier and I felt it. At first I thought this might be the oddest hangover yet having spent the previous afternoon getting sozzled on a wine tour of three of Hawke's Bay finest wineries including Esk Valley, Moana Park and Crossroads. The wine tour was definitely a highlight of the trip so far - definitely recommend it and Bay Tours should you be looking for a tip. Well after the earth moved and a very enjoyable stay in Napier despite the weather I continued my journey south to Wellington. I stopped off at a couple of beaches on the Tasman sea side on the way and cut through the Manatu gorge. So Wellington - instinctively ... read more

So Rotorua - a lovely place that smells of sulphur most of the time. I survived my first night in a dorm. I braved the bar and managed to stay out until a whopping 9.30! I decided to get up early - I had my first lesson in dorm rules - if you even look at the shower commit or you lose your shot - especially when you are sharing with 12 girls! Won't make that mistake again! I then went off to Whakawarera (?!) thermal village to meet some Maoris, see a Maori show and enjoy a traditional hangi meal - all very good - the guide was excellent despite appearing slightly jaded about having to 'welcome us into her home' - I felt slightly uncomfortable at the start but this was a commercial operation ... read more

I arrived in Auckland after a long flight from LA - I love Qantas a great airline. Luckily I met a girl called Kat in the immigration queue and ended up spending a lot of time hanging out during my time here. So it is true you do meet like-minded people 'on the road'. Whilst here I visited the Auckland museum which was interesting and had a great view of the city. As for the city itself it wasn't really cup of tea quite small and quiet - guess it's tough when u come from London. Enjoyed a lunch in K street with Kat just up the road from my hotel. Hotel was great clean cheap and friendly - city lodge for anyone interested! Second day here though I visited Devonport, which was like stepping back ... read more
