I had a very poor sleep on my last night in El Calafate. Someone in my room had a phone that would beep every minute. I think maybe the battery was dying, but it didn't seem to disturb him. Just me. I only managed to sleep for a couple of hours before it drove to a couch in the common area. So naturally I slept half of the three and a half hour bus ride to El Calafate to try and make up for it. I would have slept for the other half as well, but it was a clear day without a cloud in the sky, and that meant spectacular views of the Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre from the bus. And these are two geological features that don't really make any sense compared to ... read more

One I've my favourite characteristics of travel is the random and extraordinary things that can happen. And as far as crazy coincidence goes, I think I have topped that category on the flight to El Calafate. I sat down in my window seat and got myself set up for the three hour plus flight, and I ended up chatting with the couple next to me, who were also (coincidentally) from Canada. Actually, they were from Calgary(coincidentally)... and actually it turns out he's one of the Vice Presidents of the company that I work for! So in summary, on a domestic flight in Argentina, over 10,000 km from home (and work), I'm sitting on a plane with over one hundred other total strangers on it, and the person seated right next to me is not only also ... read more

I woke up after my late night adventure much earlier than I expected, and actually felt pretty good. My watch on the other hand appears to be dying a slow death. The screen went wonky for a while. It eventually came back, but I had to reset the time. I think it's just the battery going, but I don't think I can really rely on it to be my alarm for the rest of the trip. Early morning buses are going to be dicey... One thing that dawned on me is that I've been travelling for almost 48 hours and haven't met a single Australian... It's odd, but I don't expect that to last. I spent the morning looking into booking a flight to El Calafate to begin my trip working my way up from Patagonia, ... read more

Let the fun begin! Work has been crazy the last while, so I'm thrilled with the timing of this month off to explore Argentina! I have done very little planning at all for this trip. I've read some stuff, but I've booked nothing in advance (except the flight), and I packed the day of. So I'm mostly figuring it out as I go. Should be a good one! The first chance I had to start getting excited was at the check-in counter in Edmonton. Here we go, this is going to be good! I was looking forward to a month to do whatever I wanted.... I just needed a nap. I actually slept pretty decently on the plane, probably because I was so exhausted in the first place, and I had 20 hours to make it ... read more

Before leaving Kyoto, we went back for some more udon. No sign of Japanese Ali G., so I guess he doesn't spend all of his time there. We also took a quick walk through a Yodobashi Camera store to see some electronics (Yodobashi Camera is a chain of electronics department stores). The closest thing to a robot that we saw was a robot vacuum cleaner. So we're definitely going to have to find some in Tokyo. There wasn't really much in there that was a window to the future though. I think the cameras had a couple extra megapixels, but that's it. I think you have to go to the showrooms to really experience the future of technology, like the Sony store in Tokyo. Also, I'm thinking that companies are quicker about releasing their new tech ... read more

Another thing you can do in Kyoto, besides speed tourism, is night hiking. But one of the key considerations for night hiking is that you have to do it at night. So we had to do a bunch of boring stuff in the day to get to it, and I'm going to write about that first. Actually, something awesome happened the night before, after speed tourism. We met up with Maria, who was also at our hostel in Tokyo, and went over to the local sake bar. This sake bar had exactly seven seats in it, and all of them were around the bar. It also had a karaoke machine. This place ticked a lot of boxes for us. We clapped along while a local man sang along to a Japanese song, and then Mitch, Mike ... read more

What is speed tourism? It's essentially trying to see as much as you can in a day solely for the sake of seeing how much you can possibly get to in one day. It's all about volume. I can't take credit for it's invention, since it was Mitch that introduced us to it, but I can say that I tried it in Kyoto, and it was a good time. I'll get to that, but first we had to get to Kyoto, which it turns out is very conducive to speed tourism. After our failure to get to the fish market on a day when it was open, we decided that it was time to take a break from Tokyo. So the next most popular destination in Japan is Kyoto, and so that's where we went. This ... read more

After I went to bed on Saturday, Mitch and Mike ended up staying up pretty much all night. Mitch managed to get up on his own, but we had to wake Mike up. My first attempt to wake Mike up yielded no reaction. Great. Mike's dead. What a downer. That's probably going to end the trip right there. A second more forceful attempt sort of did the trick, but he went back to sleep immediately. Mitch and I recovered in the lounge, and I found out that they had stayed up until 5am. Actually, Mike had fallen asleep in the lounge. Some other people who were just getting back from Shibuya (because they chose to stay out all night instead of trying to catch the last subway, which is an interesting proposition, and apparently pretty standard ... read more

So..... I was sitting in Garneau Pub on a Friday evening in September, and Mike walked in and tells me he and Mitch are talking about going to Japan in December. He asks me if I want him to send me the details. I say yes. I remembered none of this when I woke up the next morning. Alcohol was a factor. And actually, Mike didn't remember it either. But, he had written it on his hand so he wouldn't forget. I owe this whole adventure to Mike's drunken hand note. He sends me a text: "Are you still interested in me sending you the info on Japan?" What??? I had to think about this one. What the hell was Mike talking about. After many minutes, maybe hours, of trying to recall the previous evenings conversations, ... read more

Well, if ever there was a lesson in blogging before the day is over, my night in Vienna would be a good example. Pretty much I didn't go to bed right away. And pretty much I drank several beers. I ended up hanging out with the Germans I met earlier. They were on their way out to some festival thing, and I figured in the spirit of getting into this solo traveling thing, I'd better start practicing seizing every opportunity to hang out with people! So our adventure started in the hostel kitchen, which is in the basement, and is behind about 5 heavy steel doors. Seriously. Straight out of Get Smart. Except without the shoe phone, sadly. It was quite a while before we actually left the hostel. So late, in fact that we had ... read more
