Soooooo...Tazos are just pogs. I watched a video on the internet. There's no real difference. So I'm collecting Simpsons pogs. And it's 2015. And I'm not ashamed. The trip to Armenia was a long 16 hour bus journey, so I'm just going to hit the highlights (if you can call them that). It was a long day, but I'm glad we made it in one shot. We don't plan on spending any time in Armenia, but it's a short bus ride to Salento, but we knew we'd be getting in too late to go to Salento and find a place to stay. So it was a sensible place to stop. Well, except for the 16 hour journey/ The journey started in San Gil when we got up very early at 5am and caught a 6am bus ... read more

With our mountain experience covered, we decided to head to San Gil... which is stil in the mountains, but, you know, different mountains. And that meant a long bus journey first. Before going to bed we'd checked the bus times. The Gacela bus stop showed that the busses left at 3:30am and 5:30am. Radio had told us that the buses 3:00am and 5:00am, but we were kind of through with trusting Radio at this point. But we should have, because we decided to get up at 4:30am, and by the time we were ready, we got outside just in time to see the nice comfortable Libertadores bus leaving town. Dammit. One minute too late. The town blared it's Christmas carol music again, and the church started filling up with people for 5:00am mass. Again, when do ... read more

Remember Radio? Well, this is the short story of how someone who seemed trustworthy and like they knew what they were doing, and slowly lost our trust. Don't get me wrong here, he's a super nice guy, but we were relying on him to take us up a glacier... Things started out fine. We met him at 7 am outside our hotel and took the bus to Guican, and even paid for our trip. At his house in Guican he introduced us to Suzanne, who's a Venezualan tourist who's also coming with us to the top of Pan de Azucar. She's a serious climber, and was hoping to do as much adveturing as she could while on holidays in Colombia. Like us, she was excited to climb a mountain that was higher than anything that she ... read more

One of the problems with a 5:10 am bus is the getting up at 4 am part. We managed it, and even though we had a short night, we're still pretty fresh at the start of our trip. This certainly won't be our only early morning and long bus ride of the trip, so we might as well get started. We'd invited Corey to join us, but he must have reconsidered the 4am wake up time, or his plans just changed. Maybe we'll run into him later in our trip. The second problem with 5:10am buses is... sometimes they don't actually exist. Our taxi driver dropped us off at the terminal (and Bogota has a big bus terminal, so it was good he dropped us off in the right spot) and we found the bus company ... read more

Ah Colombia! Long near the top of my list of places I wanted to go, and Vanessa and I were finally taking the plunge after finagling five precious weeks off work. Our trip this year is over Christmas (again) so it's high season (again). Like last year's trip to the Philippines, we're excited to experience the Christmas festivities in another country. The Philippines comes alive at Christmas, and we expect Colombia will have a similarly festive atmosphere. Travelling at high season can be tricky and requires a bit more booking ahead, but we were fine in the Philippines so we're hoping to do just as well in Colombia. Only one way to find out! The first leg of our journey took us to Toronto. Unfortunately, due to the scheduling and availability of flights, we had to ... read more

We made our way from our Manila hostel to the Manila airport by taxi trouble free, and then went about trying to spend the rest of our pesos. We didn't have enough that it would have been worth converting into Hong Kong dollars (losing a bunch to the exchange counter thugs in the process) and definitely not into Canadian dollars (where we would likely get an even worse rate). So the only logical thing to do was to go on a very tiny shopping spree. We bought lunch and some chocolates. Not that exciting. The chocolates were actually from Hawaii too. Our flight was a bit delayed, and the plane smaller than the one we flew on on the way to Manila. But it got us there, and they gave us another hot lunch. After estimating ... read more

We arrived back in Manila early in the afternoon after a short bus ride from Tagaytay. We decided that this time we'd be staying in a hostel in Makati instead of where we were in Malate at the beginning of our trip. Malate was an interesting neighbourhood, if not a little sketchy at night, but we were trying to meet with the Filipinos we'd met in Zambales and San Juan so we thought Makati might be a little more convenient for them. And Makati is more upscale than Malate, for sure. It's cleaner, and has more condos and malls, and things like that. So it's a bit more sterile too, but there is a red light district a short walk form the hostel, so not by much. There wasn't really much we planned to do this ... read more

There's a place in this world called Volcano Island. That makes me smile. I can only assume many super villains have set up shop there... Better go check it out while we're here, right? Off we go to Tagaytay! It turns out, the night bus to Manila really was as cold as we were told it would be, and we were glad we layered up. Long pants, hoodies, and jackets were barely kept us warm enough to sleep. But we did manage to sleep some on the bus, aided by the fact that we had gotten up at 6 am that morning. It was also much easier to sleep after they finally turned off the movies, none of which were any good. We were pretty groggy when we pulled into the bus terminal in Manila at ... read more

We woke up very early, at six in the morning to begin our trek out of Batad. I looked for the sunrise but there were clouds hanging over the mountain tops where it would have appeared, so now I know I definitely should have taken a picture of it last night... Oh well. After our last breakfast at Simon's, which featured cheesy pancakes and a potato pancake. I'm really going to miss having those cheesy pancakes every day. If I had discovered how delicious they were on our first day in Batad, that's probably all I would have eaten. And I should be clear, the cheese in the Philippines is not special. I think it's just processed cheese. At least, that's all we've seen around. It's not bad though, and it definitely does the trick. But ... read more

We left Sagada on a jeepney early in the morning and arrived in Bontoc just before the museum opened. We had missed seeing the museum when we were in Bontoc before, since it was closed on New Years day. We were hoping to make it to Batad, so we only had about 45 minutes to spend in the museum before we needed to leave to catch a bus to Banaue, but we could have spent a bit more time there. The museum was full of ethnographic exhibits, including rice pots, dishes, statues, spears, gongs, models, a full scale mockup of a traditional village, and headhunting photographs. Let me tell you something about decapitated heads... they really do look creepy, as you might expect. I'm betting there aren't a ton of museums that display pictures like that ... read more
