Geo: -34.6118, -58.4173A bit grumpy now as I just wrote loads on here for it all to just vanish. Our walk to la Boca was not to be,given that this is a place you don't easily pull out a map if lost. As there was nowhere to stop and browse we turned back to San telmo only to discover we had actually made it to la Boca but 3 blocks off. Will try again before we leave.it all panned out well in the end as we got to sit in a nice plaza, drink cold beer and watch the tango. The only hassle here is the bombardment of pigeons.the funniest thing we've seen in a long time also crossed our paths. Not one to mock the afflicted but please, buenos aires pavements and roads are not for ... read more

Geo: -34.6118, -58.4173Alo amigos, yep we are still here, safe, sound though now full of hay fever and cold. Think we may just have depleted the napkins and toilet rolls of BA as we sniff and sneeze across this huge city.Hotel is nice and central and day 1 we head to Puerto Madero which is the BA docks all done up and gentrified. Think melbournes South bank. The pollution is pretty horrendous and the traffic is to die for literally. Traffic in BA rules at all costs and when you have 8 lanes to get across on foot you really need your wits.We visited the pink palace of Eva Peron (nothing special) then walked the cobbled streets nearby & often run down parts to San Telmo which is a trendy arty part of BA before you get ... read more

Geo: -34.6118, -58.4173So it was goodbye to wonderful Santiago and back to the airport. Previously we trekked to the massive shopping centre to have electronic tag removed from the shirt I bought 2 weeks ago so I can at least wear the bloody thing without looking like a shoplifter. impatient passengers clog all the space possibly available despite the pilot and crew not yet on board. We are finally called and the wow factor occurred again. Our first time on the Boeing Dreamliner. No shutters on these windows; just a button that dims to the right shade you require.just under 90 minutes and more spectacular scenery we land in buenos aires (good air) we'll be the judge of that. First impressions were not good as the 35 minute drive took us through some extremely deprived estates ... read more

Geo: -51.1001, -72.5785Day 2 Torres del PaineSunday. A restless night as the rain beats against the dome. Patagonian weather is unpredictable at best and when we get up for breakfast we decide given the foul weather and the fact visibility is so low that we have no intention of hiking 26km in driving rain and decreasing temperatures to see nothing but cloud. It's gonna be a long day as there is little else to do other than read and blog. On top of this we have to change domes due to some maintenance required on ours. No upgrade to a larger and heated dome is on offer. Bugger! We are told that the winds around here can be as strong as 190kph and that the domes can withstand 240kph. We'd rather not be the Peruvian delicacy ... read more

Geo: -51.1001, -72.5785Torres del Paine national park(Towers of the Pi-nay)This amazing place was declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 1978, it contains ancient forests, glaciers, Lakes, rivers & variety of wildlife including Puma, guanaco, skunk, armadillo, rhea, black necked swan, Hawks, Eagles and the impressive condor. After breakfast Sarah leads us plus 4 others, 2 from Brisbane and our two lesbian Dutch friends from Montreal on our 12 km hiking trek. The views are breathtaking particularly of the 4 Torres (towers in English.) This is what we came to see. These granite monoliths rise majestically into the sky, their shapes eroded over time by glacial ice. Our camp is at the base of these beauties. Our hike takes in so much beauty and some natural death given the amount of recent dismembered remains and skeletons of Guanaco ... read more

Geo: -41.3265, -72.9882Later that evening our tour photographer Anna, spots us at the cafe she recommended. She briefly joins us and we raise the question that we were of the understanding that today may have ben cancelled for us as there were not enough customers.Anna stated that this was correct but fortunately for us others were moved to this company as yesterday on another tour companies rafting trip a man suffered from an unrelated activity massive heart attack and died at the scene. We were quite shocked, but call it selfishness were relieved that we did not miss out on another activity through no fault of ours.Mr Unknowntous, may you rest in peace and condolences to you friends and family. Geo: -51.1001, -72.5785Patagonia. Torres del PainePronounced: Towers of Pi-nay.We leave slightly earlier to day to get to the airport as the fog is so thick that the police have closed the roads. Our driver decides to take the bone shaking unsealed road, which fortunately gets us there with an hour to spare.Flight lands 2 hour later in Punta Arenas where we are met by our driver and guide, Sarah and embark on our 5 hour road trip to the ecocamp. The scenery has changed again and is reasonably flat and dry. We can see the Magellan strait in the distance. We stop along the way for lunch and then head off again and the snow capped Andes begin to appear ... read more

Geo: -41.3265, -72.9882Wow again, that was an absolute thrill today. A 9am pick up and we join our fellow thrill seekers who are from Germany. Our guide (forgot his name) was a hoot the whole time.I was quite a cold morning which was of some concern but this was soon laid to rest when we put on our wetsuits and other wet weather gear. Chris and I looked like Captain Kirk and Spock in our black wetsuits and me in blue top and him in yellow. On arrival at the river we are given our life jackets and helmets and head through the brush to the river. Here we are given basic training and safety instructions including what we should do should someone end up in the fast flowing currents. Little did I know at the ... read more

Geo: -41.4752, -72.9521Flights to Santiago and then on to Puerto Montt. We apparently flew over the volcano that erupted 2 days ago, not much activity though so may have calmed down. Did not manage to get a photo due to the child in the window seat upending her orange juice all over her table, brother and self. Chris was getting as many napkins for her to mop up the mess. There were people all standing and moving to windows to get photos, somehow the plane did not tip over.Arrived at our hotel which is in Puerto Varas and minutes from Lago (lake) Llanquihue and Mount Orsono (pointy volcano) This is one stunning site. We decide to walk into the main centre which is mainly hotels, restaurants and tourists from across the world. We need to purchase ... read more
