I arrived in Tasmania first thing in the morning and caught a shuttle bus to where I was staying in Hobart. I spent the morning exploring the dock and Salamanca market and then in the afternoon I called practically every single cherry orchard in the state looking for work! I'd heard cherry picking wasn't bad as you can make some decent money and it's one of the less strenuous fruit picking jobs.. but still after 3 days of non-stop cherries, I decided I wasn't going to make much money or have much fun and threw in my job to go travelling round the island with a group of others. Before we left I managed to fit in a cruise around Bruny island, which is right at the south of Tasmania where we got to see ... read more

We arrived at our hotel in Hong Kong at around 3pm- our train had been delayed and it took a bit of time to get everyone through customs and make our way to our hotel. In the afternoon we just had a walk around as we didn't have that much time before all meeting for our farewell dinner (this was the last night of the actual tour) Our last dinner was great and we all sat round a big table on the street and ate our favourite Chinese food- we'd eaten egg fried rice pretty much every night but our favourites were sweet and sour pork, sizzling beef and there were lots of good vegetable dishes too like aubergine and garlic broccoli. Interestingly, I didn't come across a single prawn cracker or chow mein the whole ... read more

Our overnight train arrived at Guilin quite early in the morning and we had to drive for another hour to get to Yangshuo. On the drive there you're surrounded by karst hills (very pointy, picturesque looking hills) -it was really nice to get away from the hustle and bustle of the huge cities we'd been to and to be in a more rural, less polluted setting. Yangshuo is quite touristy but I think that somehow gives it some of it's charm. There are lots of bars, cafes and loads of little shops to wander round. In the afternoon we went to the Li river which is just the most stunning setting you can imagine. We got on bamboo rafts and went for a cruise up the river- it''s so peaceful and you're still surrounded by these ... read more

We arrived in Xi'an at about 10am and caught a pretty crowded public bus to our new hotel. After freshening up a bit, we had a bit of a walk around- Xi'an feels smaller than Beijing and Shanghai as the old part of the city is surrounded by city walls, (having said that though it still has a population of at least 8 million.) Some of us decided it would be cool to cycle round the walls (which is about 8 miles in total) so we rented our bikes and did a lap of the walls in about 75 minutes! On our second day in Xi'an we set off early to go and see the terracotta warriors. Unfortunately you can't get too close to them but the shear number of them all lined up was amazing ... read more

On day five we arrived in Shanghai where we then had a pretty crazy taxi ride to our hotel. The driver was literally in and out of the lanes over and undertaking people to go as fast as he could- it felt a little like a high speed chase in a film!! Arrived at our hotel in one piece though- it was on the corner of a really cool street with lots of neon signs and things. The second hotel was also quite a lot nicer than I think a lot of us were expecting as we thought that they were going to deteriorate in standard as we went along! Walked to the bund and went up to the top of the world financial centre- the lift alone is quite an experience, you feel like you're ... read more

After our long 10 hour flight I met Laura and Joe (two others from my tour!) at baggage reclaim and we made our way to the taxi rank. Driving in to Beijing is pretty impressive- the road is about 5 lanes wide, dead straight, newly resurfaced and there are sky scrapers and trees lining the sides. I wonder whether the city looked half as smart as this before they had the olympics here in 2008. After about a half an hour taxi drive we arrived at our hotel which was much better than I'd been expecting! I met my roomate, Cindy (from Norway) and we went off to explore one of the main streets next to where we were staying. Later that evening we met the rest of the group (all British apart from one Canadian ... read more
