South America » Argentina » Tierra del Fuego » Ushuaia December 14th 2010

Tuesday 19th October 2010 Our 06.15 alarm roared to life for our 06:45 taxi to the airport. Packing quickly & quietly we headed downstairs to be told it was only 05:30 - Bummer! Making the most of it we headed to the airport earlier grabbing some much needed sustenance. Our taxi was waiting for us when we reached Ushuaia - It was nice seeing our names on cardboard and not having to lug our bags too far for a change. Arriving at a very basic looking house we wondered if we’d been taken to the wrong place. Inside it was nice, but there was no separate living quarters from the owner and this made it feel a little like we were intruding in her home (not helped over the next few days by the fact ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires October 19th 2010

Thursday 14th October 2010 Managed to check our baggage on the ferry to Buenos Aires so we didn’t have to lug them around which was handy, but we still had to put them through a scanner when we arrived at the other end. Joanne spent the entire crossing in duty free putting various moisturisers on her neglected traveller’s skin. On arrival at the port, Tourist Information gave us the wrong directions to the metro. We walked for what felt like an eternity with our heavy backpacks, only to encounter a ‘closed’ sign when we finally did find the station. We hopped on a bus towards San Telmo, but couldn’t pay for it as the machine didn’t take notes (even though a 2 PESO note is the equivalent to about 30p). The bus driver must have taken ... read more

South America » Uruguay » West » Colonia del Sacramento October 13th 2010

Wednesday 12th October 2010 Leaving Montevideo we took the bus to Colonia del Sacrimento. Checking into Colonia Hostel we hired the worst bikes ever. Richard’s chain came off any time he tried to apply any force & Joanne’s brakes didn’t work, all combined with the fact neither of us could sit down on the unpadded saddles! We cycled up and down the cobbled streets of the old town before finding the paved coast road to the beaches. Unfortunately they weren’t much to look at with cold grey water so we headed back to the hostel, covered in oil. We wandered to the ferry port to buy tickets to Buenos Aires but forgot our passports not thinking about the border crossing, but the chap said there was plenty of room & we could book on the morning. ... read more

Tuesday 12th October 2010 23 hours on a bus later we arrived in Montevideo. Hunting out the plainest, ugliest building around we checked in (it was the closest hotel to the bus terminal). It took all of 2 seconds to hit a language barrier again, facing a large, old, scary looking woman. However, ‘Una noche’ & ‘¿Cuánto cuesta?’ just about got us through. Dumping our bags we headed into town to stretch our legs and make the most of our lone day. Montevideo has one long main road which connects the new and old town with an obvious cafe culture. It ends at a port to the sea with shipbuilding on one side & pathway to the beach on the other. After wandering around the town for a while we headed to the beaches, but the ... read more

South America » Brazil » Santa Catarina » Florianópolis October 11th 2010

Friday 8th October 2010 Arriving in Florianopolis city centre late morning with another long bus to Ilha Santa Caterina (following poor directions), we met a friendly local who pointed out the sites and helped us find our way. We were welcomed by the owner, Roberta, when we arrived at “Way2Go” hostel, she advised us to grab a local boat up the lake to Costa Lagoa for lunch, so we headed out but missed the hourly boat, then the heavens opened & wind picked up so we decided to lunch in the comfort of our warm, dry hostel instead. We were in Lagoa, a small lively town on Ilha Santa Caterina - we hit the town that night and stumbled across a real gem called the Big Bamboo, which, for obvious reasons looked like it belonged on ... read more

Tuesday 5th October 2010 15 hours on a bus later, we arrived at Foz do Iguacu. It was a cold and uncomfortable journey with the AC pumping out all night, especially when we appeared to be the only people who hadn’t bought our duvets along for the ride. Our hosts from the Klein Hostel picked us up from the bus terminal and on arrival we asked about tours. We were told a group of Germans were heading to the Argentinean side imminently. We’d planned to do this the next day, but there was a clear blue sky and you can’t rely on the weather lasting out here so we decided to take the bull by the horns. A quick change, some breakie in a bag, rucksacks into storage, and we were off 5 minutes after our ... read more

South America » Brazil » São Paulo » São Paulo October 4th 2010

Saturday 2nd October 2010 A six hour bus to Sao Paulo went quickly thanks to Stephen Fry reading us our first Audio-book, Harry Potter (thanks Suz & Jon x). After a couple of Metro Trains we arrived a Saci hostel & decided to get on with our day and go straight for a walk. We headed toward the football stadium to see if we could catch a game, but as we approached we could hear the raucous cries from the crowd and arrived just as the game was finishing. We made our escape back up the hill to avoid being enveloped in a crowd with thousands of fans. Take away pizza for dinner was pretty awful, as was the in-house entertainment which sounded like a cat being strangled, so we departed to find some nightlife in ... read more

South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro » Paraty October 3rd 2010

Tuesday 28th September 2010 An early start to check out of our Pousada and catch the 10am ferry to Angra. We found our bus to Paraty (Pa-ra-chee) easily with helpful directions from the girls at the Pousada. We jumped on and grabbed two empty seats at the front and 2 bumpy hours later we arrived. After a brief chat with Tourist info, we followed a guy called Rogeiro (who turned out to be mad) to the Che Lagarto hostel. Once settled we went for a wander around the historic old town, which is the oldest example of colonial architecture in Brazil. Very pretty and full of nick-nack shops Richard thought his wallet might take a caning and be carrying lots more stuff, but luckily Joanne was restrained. Dinner at the hostel was cheap, just R$10 ... read more

South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro » Ilha Grande September 26th 2010

Friday 24th September 2010 After geting up at 4am for our taxi to the Rodoviaria (bus station), we arrived only to find the timetable had changed & we had missed the bus by minutes. We opted for a bus 10 minutes later to Angra where there is another port to Ilha Grande, but the boat wouldn't leave till the afternoon meaning we'd miss our one potentially sunny day. However on a service stop we caught the 1st bus as it was about to leave and the driver kindly organised a switch so we could get our 8am boat as planned from Mangarativa. The boat journey to Ilha Grande was rocky and took about 90 mins. When we arrived we were acosted by a little lady on a bicycle (with basket) who kidnapped us and took us ... read more

South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro » Rio de Janeiro » Ipanema September 26th 2010

Monday 20th September 2010 Arrived in Rio late on Monday and got the bus to Ipanema (the trendy & expensive part of Rio, a bit like Chelsea). We didn't have anywhere booked to stay - Organised as ever - so we wondered a little and tried a few hotel/ apartment blocks, but they wanted between R$350-R$795 (around £140-£310) a night. Obviously, this was a little over our backpackers budget so we continued trudging through the streets with our backpacks until we came across "The Girl from Ipanema" hostel, at a bargain R$80 a night for a private room (although this meant a twin roon so we spent the first night of our honeymoon in bunk beds!). Tuesday 21st September 2010 The sun was out so we had a lazy first day. Breakfast included a cheese & ... read more
