Thursday 27th January 2011 We bought a 3rd class train ticket for 40p, but when boarding the train at Bangkok we accidentally (on advice from the station guard) sat in 2nd class – we thought it was a bit weird that the carriage had aircon! Shortly after departing we were advised of our error by the ticket inspector and moved on to the last carriage with cattle class. It was hot & sticky, but we managed to get a seat & then left the connecting door open for a nice breeze! Luckily the guy sitting next to us was keeping an eye out and let us know as we reached Ayutthaya - we could have easily missed our stop as it didn’t stop for long at the station. After arriving in Ayutthaya we wandered to the ... read more

Tuesday 25th January 2011 Arriving early on our night train from Surat Thani, we booked some accommodation with the tourist office at the station for the Swan Hotel. The Hotel had an outdoor pool so we decided to make the most of it and go for a swim. Richard did 40-50 lengths to get the blood pumping and then relaxed in the sun for a while, but Joanne had to get straight out as her skin started to hurt – probably too much chlorine? We took the river taxi to Khao San Road to see the infamous backpacker district and took a wander down the road and through the market stalls. Back at our hotel we got a tuk tuk to dinner, but he dropped us at a pricey restaurant and we were sure he would ... read more

Sunday 23rd January 2011 After a lazy morning at Phi Phi Hill we boarded our ferry to Phuket, but we decided not to stay there. We hopped on a bus to Phang Nga where we booked a tour of the National Park and James Bond Island the following day. Monday 24th January 2011 Our tour took us to Phang Nga National park where we drifted through Mangroves on the slowest boat ever. We seemed to be overtaken at every turn, which worried us slightly as we wondered how we would fit everything in when we were travelling at half the speed of all the other tours. After travelling past many ‘sights’ that our guide pointed at and announced their names, we went kayaking (well, we sat in a kayak while a local tour guide did all ... read more

Thursday 20th January 2011 During our journey on the morning ferry to Ko Phi Phi, we took in the breathtaking views of the surrounding limestone karsts jutting out of the sea. On arrival we realised we wouldn’t be able to get cheap accommodation with air-conditioning, and it was so hot that wasn’t an option, so we pushed the boat out and were taken aback when we saw the location of our chosen resort over looking long beach with un-obscured sea views. Long beach was a short boat ride from the main town which meant it was very quiet and our private bungalow at Phi Phi Hill was above one of the best resorts on the island for a fraction of the cost. After settling in we had a lovely fresh fish meal before taking a 30 ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ao Nang March 10th 2011

Tuesday 18th January 2011 Our night train arrived late morning in Hat Yai and we arranged a mini bus to Krabi a few hours later. 4 more hours and we arrived in Krabi, only then being informed we’d have to pay a little more to get to Ao Nang on the coast (something we would have to get used to over the coming months). Ao Nang was very touristy, but we checked into Ben’s House, a small guest house with a pool and decided to stay a couple of nights while we found our feet. After walking past the many clothing and souvenir stalls, we finally made it to the bottom of town and had a lovely fresh fish meal by the sea front with Chinese Lanterns being let off all around. Monday 17th January 2011 After 1 cancelled train we eventually made our way out to the Batu caves. Climbing the hundreds of stairs to the large opening we were presented with a huge cavity which led through to lots of small places of worship and the obligatory Bhuddas. On the way down we were almost hit in the head by a flying coconut, courtesy of a hungry monkey who was attempting to smash it open. 2 flights of stairs later it chipped the brickwork and split into 2 followed very quickly by said monkey. After that we hurried down the stairs keeping our wits about us. At the bottom we encountered a woman slowly rolling to the bottom of the stairs soaked in water that a man was dousing her with as she moved. The trail ... read more

Friday 14th January 2011 After a final swim in the lovely pool we had a final walk around the town. We bought a couple of dresses and vest tops from the market by the beach after failing to haggle a decent price for several items from the stalls outside our hotel. They must have been gutted when they saw us return with hands full of bags. After a smooth flight, our first with Air Asia, we arrived in Singapore and got a taxi to Hotel 81 Palace which we’d booked online. It didn’t seem to be in the best district, considering there were prostitutes hanging around the end of the road, but it was only a quick cab ride to the centre of the city. As soon as our bags were dumped we headed to Clarkes ... read more

Sunday 9th January 2011 Joanne kicked off at our driver after he arrived an hour late, then drove like Nigel Mansel to make up the time. Overtaking every car on the road – despite the fact large busses and lorries were coming at us in the opposite direction - with several very narrow squeezes around blind corners. We finally got him to ease off the accelerator, but not before we’d all said a prayer for our lives. When we eventually arrived at the port, our boat was waiting for us (not such a surprise since we hadn’t paid yet) and we were treated to the roughest boat crossing we’ve ever encountered. A screaming baby added to the atmosphere during our hour of misery and there were lots of green faces all around. Joanne had never been ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Sanur March 6th 2011

Friday 7th January 2011 After rushing around all morning to pack our spreading mess back into our small rucksacks, we caught a bus to the train station, but the tickets to the Airport were really expensive so we decided to spend a couple more dollars on a cab for a much smoother journey. At check in we were interrogated about our onward travel from Bali. We had fortunately booked a flight from Bali to Singapore just a few days before and had the details on out Netbook, without this flight they wouldn’t have let us board, despite a ticket out of Beijing 3 months later and an obvious round the world itinerary... a bit of a problem when airlines “cabin share”, but don’t “information share”). On arrival at Dempensar we organised to stay at Alit Beach ... read more

Friday 31st December 2010 Spending most of the day scoping out places to watch the Fireworks, we decided against trying for the botanical gardens and waiting the whole day in the heat and crowds (especially as it’s an alcohol free zone!). A lot of the small beaches near Vaucluse that used to be free to the public have been restricted and are now ticket only - funnily enough, arriving on the 30th they were sold out! We found a great spot near to Rose Bay Girls School with a panoramic view of the bridge and harbour. Only two people were there, although it was only 11am at this point and there were enough picnic tables and chairs saving places to take up most of the front. We gambled and returned at 7:30pm to find hundreds of ... read more
