on saturday morning at a bright and early 5:30 am, broder and i headed to machu picchu. a twenty minute taxi ride and 3.5 hour train ride later, we arrived in aguas calientes, the necessary stopping point before going to machu picchu. we got into town at about 10:30 am, checked into our hotel, and then realized, after literally roaming the entire town, that there is absolutely nothing to do in aguas calientes. we saw a few 8 person parades that were pretty cool, filled with extravagant costumes and loud music and then had lunch by their very own plaza de armas. the rest of the day consisted of hanging out, roaming around, and napping after only having about four hours of sleep the night before. that night we had an orientation with the trip coordinator ... read more

AREQUIPA. craziest adventure yet. so it all began with this massive double decker bus with blaring, horrendous, sort of tribal music along with music video. i was sitting on the top floor in the front row with a fantastic view of the night drive. the bus left at about 8 pm and was due to arrive in arequipa at 6 am. the road to arequipa is a windy, mountainous, scary as hell journey that was pretty awesome and terrifying at the same time. being in the front allowed me to witness the constant possible ways i could die, but the views were so cool and we were literally on the side of a mountain, taking up both lanes because the bus was so large. after half sleeping and half freezing because peruvians don´t seem to believe ... read more

hey all, i haven´t written in a while and everything is kind of blurring together but i´m going to try my best to get it down here. last saturday (over a week ago) i went horse backriding through the hills a little outside of cusco. it was a group of about 8 of us and we hopped on horses, got a guide, and explored the temple of the moon, the temple of the monkey, and other sacred, ancient inca spots. it was so so sweet. i haven´t ridden a horse since i was about 8 years old and was scared out of my mind to be riding up and down and all around these mountains on a much taller than i four legged animal, who i had no idea how to control. but, in the end ... read more

my kids are the most draining little things ever. im so exhausted by them but i´m there and i play and i teach and i read to them and they are cute but loud and chaotic and i can only understand like every 5th word they say cuz they speak some mix of quechua and spanish. AH. but i was teaching a girl how to do some dance moves and she LOVED it which was awesome. i´m also freaked though because one of the other volunteers at the after school program with me told me that the kids have fleas and thats why we have red bumps. SO EFFING GROSS. but the doctor assured me that wasn´t the case. then again he prescribed me 50 mg of steroids. so again there is nothing i can do ... read more

I MISS SUMMER WEATHER. i´m actually wearing a turtle neck right now. yeah. anyways...¡enjoy! So a few friends and I were going to take the 8 hour overnight bus ride to Arequipa on wednesday in order to spend a few days in the town then hike in the huge and famous canyon there. We are signing up for a trip where you spend a day hiking into the canyon, sleep at the bottom, then hike out the of the canyon the following mornig. Arequipa is supposed to be super cool (the deepest canyon in the world), but i think we are holding off for another week so we can go with a few other friends that are going to machu pichu this weekend. apparently at the bottom of the canyon are little cabins to sleep in ... read more

hola amigos! cuzco is just so damn cool. i walk around and it hits me that this place is unlike any other and i love it for that. yesterday was the really important and huge incan holiday of inti raymi and celebrations started wedensday morning and ended late last night. there have been outrageous, colorful, loud, incredible parades for over 24 hours with different groups and places around the city represented in traditional clothing, playing their specific music, and doing traditional dances. there was even a dance off in the plaza de armas of traditional incan dances. all of the towns and schools prepare their own march and it was saweeet. it was crazy busy and more people packed into one street than i have ever seen in my entire life. on thursday- the offical day ... read more

hola chicos! peru is amazing. its like this big village sunken in between mountains and its a mix of now and back in the day. tomorrow and thursday are huge incan festival days with traditional ceremonies and dances and everyone is off from work and school. im really excited. today was my first day of spanish class and its was sooo great because its just three of us and we meet for 2 hours a days and i´ve actually spoken more spanish in class and in here in general than i did in four years of high school spanish. i´m doing this tandem exchange program that i started today and was partnered with a peruvian student who wants to learn english. my partner is 19 and his name is reny ( im actually not completely certain ... read more

Hi Guys! we have made it in peru and excuse my lack of punctuation and capitalization because i still haven´t figured out this computer. after an excrutiating long day of travel, especially the overnight flight from nyc to lima, brods and i finally made it! cusco is incredible. it´s this small city right in the middle of the mountains. the flight from lima to cusco was breath taking- it literally felt like we could touch the mountains. the first day i felt like i had been hit by a truck and was really sick, but i´m feeling so much better today just a headache and short of breath. on sunday, we arrived at maximo nivel and were taken to the house we are staying in in the neighborhood of la florida. the house is cute, clean, ... read more
