On my Birthday we went to Wet n Wild. I got a didgeridoo and a necklace, a koala magnet, pencils. At wetn Wikd there were so many slides. THere was a wave pool and a black slide. The Tornado, aquarace and the twister. The scariest one was the Tornado and I was too small to go on the Surf Rider. The Black Hole had hot water in because it was black and black absorbs heat. I got a boomerang and sunglasses and a book. And I got a cake that I decorated with Flirty and Beauty. It was shaped as a number nine and it had worms and icing on it and hundreds and thousands - it looked so good and we took a photo. At Wet n Wild at night there was a film on in ... read more

We have had a roller coaster week - not least cos we all went to Wet 'n' Wild for Fab's birthday. It is a great water park and we all went on most things - Fab was disappointed she couldnt go on the vertical surf board but I have to admit to being quite relieved myself! There was a small debate prior to launching ourselves down the black hole as Bendy and Fatty disappeared down the chute together and we discovered that there was a weight restriction but apparently that only made the ride quicker! Fab had a low point in the week as well as she had to have a filling in her tooth - at least she will be taking a piece of Australia back with her. At the beginning of the week we ... read more

We have spent the last week based in Cairns on the Barrier Reef. We took a couple of trips out to see the reef and the kids all really enjoyed snorkelling with all the fish and coral around. Highlights of the trips were sighting of lots of 'Nemo' lookalikes, a shark, several giant clams and picking up sea cucumbers!! Al the children did really well cos on the second trip the swell was beginning to get up but that was our best trip for seeing the fish etc. The first trip was on a catamarang to a coral Cay. The sea was turquoise and the coral almost white - it really was idyllic. The Cay was also the home to several thousand Turns (brings me to mind of another joke abut the Common Turn which also ... read more

Hi, I went to the Barrier Reef and we got there on a boat. The island we went to was called a Cay. I went snorkelling there and saw lots of different corals. There was a fire coral and on the way back we counted jelly fish. We had to wear a suit so that we didnt get stung by jelly fish. The fish I saw were clown fish and parrot fish (the boys are colourful and the girls arent). I saw a baby shark that looked like a fish. I dived down so close that the floppy coral just moved when I swam near. I fell over on the pontoon and grazed my leg. I had to have orange stuff on it and it stung. But it was worth it. The night markets are markets ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Coromandel January 17th 2008

We have spent a couple of days in Roturua in the centre of North Island. Roturua has magma quite close to the earth’s surface and has hot springs and sulphurous mud pools. The photos don’t do justice to the smell which is all pervading. The landscape is difficult to get your head round - hot plopping mud and sulphur springs close to normal plants and buildings constructed on what appears to be solid ground. We met up with the Norths again for a few days in the Kauaeranga Valley at the South end of the Coromandel peninsula near Thames which originally developed because of the 19c gold rush. The pace of life here seems to be zzzzzzz.... (sorry fell asleep). We stayed in a wood cabin in what appeared to be the middle of nowhere. It ... read more

Hi bloggers, we've seen glowworms in nz, the glow on the worm is the maggot poo burning. they have these long string that hang from the ceiling and the little maggots crawl around them, the strings are for catching the prey. After being maggots they turn into caccoons and roll up it the string. a couple of weeks later they turn in to flys and buzz around the cave. the flys die after a couple of days from starvation because they dont havev mouths. we saw them in these dark caves full of water when we went water rafting, black water rafting is where you put your bum in these black doughnut shaped floats and you float down a stream. the glow worms really show up in the dark. Later that week, we went on this ... read more

No, I didnt know what it was until a few days ago. The Tongariro Crossing is a one day trek across 'steep volcanic terrain'. It took us 9 hours to complete and hats off the the kids (especially Fabulous) who seemed to take the whole thing in their stride!! More than I can say for the Family 5 adults - we are still suffering from sore muscles a couple of days later! The start of the crossing is at Mangatepopo. we got dropped off there by bus. The intention was that Myself, Fabulous and Nagging would probably not make it and therefore turn back after an hour or two - for some reason this did not occur and I'm still not sure how that happened - the question of stopping just did not seem to arise. ... read more

We arrived in New Zealand last week and had a good flight over - there was a small problem at the airport as a sniffer dog found the scent of fruit in my handbag as we were picking up our bags. The dog promptly sat down by my bag and ensured that I was the centre of attention for a while. After ensuring that I did not possess any of the aforementioned fruit the dog was led away only to return promptly to my bag and sit down again beside it - once again we turned out my handbag - no fruit. It was generally agreed that as I have a reputation for retaining things in my bag for longer than is strictly necessary that the smell was probably from some putrid fruit that had long ... read more

Well this is the chance for you lot back in the UK to have a little laugh at our expense because for the past week the Queensland coast has been on the receiving end of the far reaches of a mini typhoon. It has been wet and windy nearly every day. So much so that at one point we cancelled all activities in order to build an ark! Anyway it really hasn't stopped us enjoying ourselves (what's a few spots of rain between sisters!). We have still hit the beach and as you can imagine the surf has really been up- the kids have enjoyed the boogy boards and once you are in the sea you are wet anyway (Yes I a putting a brave face on it!) On Sunday for Fiendish's Birthday we went north to ... read more

Hi - we had a Foam Party at the beach. The Mums got scared that we might go under the foam cos it went over our heads. Dad and I went in. I was the only Edge child to go in. The foam was quite deep and we jumped from foam free island into the foam. My cousin slipped over and all the foam rushed around him. It was great fun. I dont know why the others didnt come in. At the Zoo we fed the kangaroos and patted the koalas and we saw a massive snake called Millie who was about the size of a car. We watched a croc show at the Crocoseum where a man stood in a river with Crocs. We got free Kanagaroo food and we fed the kangaroos again. When ... read more
