Going Back to Portsea ... The Officer Cadet School was never a place that attracted me back for sentimental visits. I think that I drove down once with the family when they were quite young, and turned away at the gates without going any further. I was glad to be overseas when it closed and was absorbed into the Royal Military College, Duntroon. That, at least, let me avoid avoid going back. Even then, I couldn't avoid begging letters from past graduates flogging this history or that limited edition sketch of the old buildings. After the Officer Cadet School closed, the site was taken over by the the School of Army Health, and I visited it on several occasions in the early and mid-1990s. It had started to lose its horror, and become just another set ... read more

Visiting Brian ... and Helen and Lucian Elaine and I have flown to Melbourne for the Queens Birthday Long Weekend to celebrate the 30th anniversary of my graduation from Portsea. About 20 of us will be gathering. Some arriving tonight. Some, like me, making the trip down the Mornington Peninsula tomorrow. Today, though, is really Elaine's shopping day - the sweet siren song of the outlet centres is calling, and I know that there is little point in trying to resist. Last year she planned to come down for the weekend with an old friend, and somehow they ended up in Hawaii visiting the outlet centres there. Oh, and there was a little bit of sightseeing, or so I was told. So we arrived at Brian and Helen's place in Brunswick, where we will be staying ... read more

South America » Chile » Santiago Region » Santiago April 17th 2005

Heading Home After nearly a month away from home alone, I was finally on my way back. Getting from Quito to Canberra was not going to be easy. It couldn't be done in one hit unless one went up to Miami, across to LA and then to Sydney, and even then there were some quite long breaks. Another route seemed to end up in the US mid-West for half a day in some city whose name I barely recognised - not enough time to go anywhere, but too long just to hang around the airport without getting horribly bored. So I had stayed a couple of extra days in Quito, and was now on my way to Santiago for a couple of days before catching a LAN Chile/QANTAS code share flight back through Auckland. The plan ... read more

We must spend two days in Cuenca Lisa, the Kumuka guide had been adament that Cuenca needed a full two days, and we had altered the proposed itinerary in Peru to make sure we had an extra day up our sleeves for just that purpose. Arrival So far today we had done a temporary repair when an accellerator spring had snapped, and it was impossible to rev the engine. We also put a bit of grease into the pivots and hinges which had not seen grease for some time. By the time this was fixed, Mark was not only relieved had not having got us stuck without accommodation, Fran was apparently quite a lot easier to drive. It was Good Friday, and we were arriving late in the afternoon. I'm not sure whether this was a ... read more

South America » Peru » Tumbes » Punta Sal March 21st 2005

The long road north The travel dossier entry makes it look so easy - 'we drive north through the Sechura desert to the tiny beach resort of Punta Sal'. It doesn't say 'we will abuse the driver by forcing him to drive for nearly 14 hours with as few rest stops as possible, give him almost no help when he has a flat, ask him to turn the truck in an area that would be tight for anything bigger than a small car, and still expect him to drive the rear wheels'. Nor does it say 'at every opportunity there is to make take a wrong turn, the guide will'. But it should. If I had thought that the first travel day was long, this day was longer. We started earlier, finished later, and Lisa got ... read more

Finding the local guide There was a bit of too-ing and fro-ing as Lisa sorted out the local guide who would be showing us Chan Chan and the Temples of the Sun and the Moon today. The original guide did not seem to be available, but had recommended a stand-in for the occasion. All this became known after the original guide failed to show up at the agreed time and place - which all went to make the whole arrangement seem a bit amatuerish. Eventually, a fortyish something woman did show up. Lisa began spruiking her up as one of the best local guides for the two sites we were going to see today, which caused me to wonder why she had bothered with the guide who had failed to show! Arrival - Day Zero Its strange to think that this is the first overseas trip that I am really doing by myself. Every other time that I have travelled outside of Australia, it has been with spouse and when the children were at home, them as well. In the middle of the night last night, I arrived at Lima airport, and about 90 minutes later was getting out of the airport bus at this hotel. Tomorrow I join a Kumuka tour, and will overland over the next 20 days, ending up in Quito. Lisa, the tour guide, has rung and made arrangements to meet me, as it appears that I am the only one joining the group here at Lima. So there are no other pax here to share my concerns and expectations with, which was ... read more

The Evening It was going to be a long night. We were returning home to Canberra from England on a Air NZ flight via LA and Auckland after being on the road for five weeks. Two legs were over nine hours, and they other two would add another five hours. Almost a complete day in the air! Our seats were quite close to the front of the aircraft, just forward of the door we boarded through, and several seats around us were unoccupied for the London to LA leg, so we were expecting a quiet time. It was not to be. At first we didn't notice the woman in the centre seats just in front of us. There was nothing obviously unusual about her, even when she was escorted back from the front cabin by ... read more
