I'd never been to Singapore despite it being on the Malaysian doorstep. From several sources, Singapore did not receive the best reviews. Many said it was too perfect and slightly boring. I was hopefully only staying for a day but I still had enough time to make a judgement for myself. I arrived at the airport not having done any research or booking any hotels. A bit risky considering how expensive Singapore is. The helpful lady at the Information Desk, at the airport, found me a room for about £25. That was the cheapest rate around, although it was located Singapore's Red Light District. I arrived expecting the area to be awful and a run-down. What I had forgotten was that this was Singapore. Yes, ladies of the night did roam the streets, but it was ... read more

The Indians are consistent at one thing, at least: being late. This time my bus was eight hours overdue on arrival. That meant I spent twenty whole hours stuck with thirty rowdy Indians. I must have been able to reach London and beyond if I added up the total distances by train and bus, in India. Another Ball-ache (excuse my French) was that every budget hotel in my Lonely Planet was fully booked due the Cricket World Cup Final being in town. Dazed, I drifted around South Mumbai trying to find a room. It took an hour and a half to find a hostel where the rooms only big enough for a single bed and a bedside table. After almost a whole day journeying from Hyderabad, it could have been a five-Star hotel for all I ... read more

Remember when I said my train to Delhi was notorious for being late? Well, it didn't let itself down. It made my twelve hour trip into a seventeen hour mission. How can a night train be this late?! Thankfully, I had given myself an extra day before my flight to Hyderabad. I must be learning! Getting to Hyderabad was simple enough on the elegant sounding (not) local airline "SpiceJet". It was a different case when collecting my rucksack. I waited by the baggage carousel for a good forty-five minutes. My brightly orange covered bag was nowhere to be seen. Being close to slowly soiling myself, I checked the board again. I discovered that two flights from Delhi had arrived at the same time and I had been standing next to the other flight's carousel the whole ... read more

Asia » India » Uttar Pradesh » Varanasi March 23rd 2011

Before heading to the chaos of Varanasi I stopped off in Allahabad for a couple of nights. I'm not sure if this was a wise decision or not. The main problems were all to do with the hotel. Dusty, bed bugs, dusty, no shower and did I mention dusty?! Furthermore, the hotel had a 24 hour checkout policy. Since I arrived at 6.30 AM, I had to checkout at this time too. On a more positive note, the city was not at all touristy. Does not sound like an advantage initially but it meant I was free from any harassment most of the time. The selling point of Allahabad was Sangam. This is the meeting point of the two largest rivers in India: Yamuna and Ganges. This is a pilgrimage site for millions of Hindus. A ... read more

I could not be more excited about my visit to Agra. Could it actually be as startling as everybody says? On the way, I stopped off at abandoned city of Fatehpur Sikri. My Lonely Planet suggested it was a top 18 thing to go a see/do in India. Navigating my way through the dodgy dealers was the first task. Every couple of steps I was stopped by someone trying to sell me guided tours, postcards, Taj Mahal tickets and more. New tactic: iPod headphones on! It worked, although I did get some disgruntled looks on my way. As it was free, I entered the Fatehpur Sikri version of the Jama Masjid (if you've been concentrating, the other one is in Delhi). This one was far more impressive, even though it was apparently smaller. The mosque was ... read more

Being picked up from the station at 6AM was a luxury. What still surprised me though was the streets were choc-a-block. The traffic to get out of the station was unbelieivable. It was easy to see that Jaipur was a 24/7 city. Putting my head down until late afternoon seemed like a waste of valuable touring time but I have discovered sleep is the key to a happy camper. I only ventured out with my driver to eat at a local Indian restaurant. My evening was spent watching England beat the West Indies in an absolute classic. England are nothing without Swanny! (Apologies to anybody who doesn't understand or care!) With only one day to see Jaipur I felt I would be completely rushed off my feet. I ventured to the old fortified city of Amber ... read more

Asia » India » Rajasthan » Udaipur March 13th 2011

Due to my booking error the night bus was the only way to Udaipur. This was to be the worst journey of my life. The bus was old and dirty; the suspension was non existent on pot-holed roads; locals who did not seem to care it was the middle of the night; iPod running out of battery and a complete lack of English. At one point I thought I was going in the opposite direction. 8 hours of hell. The only good thing was that the hotel owner was waiting for me as I got off the bus. My knight in shining armour. My first day was to be a recovery from the torture of the previous night: extra naps, watching World Cup cricket and full body Ayurvedic Massage. If only I could afford to do ... read more

I am becoming much more accustomed to the long trips now. This time a mere seven hours to Jodhpur, "The Blue City". I arrived in the evening, where outside the station were the most homeless people I have ever seen. An impressive yet sad sight. After being dropped to my hotel, which I had already booked, I was informed that the hotel was full. The manager said I could stay with him for a night or two. Reluctantly I agreed but there was no need to be so hesitant. His house was enormous with an obviously homely feel. I even got a home cooked dinner. What a stroke of luck. The next day I hopped on a tuk-tuk to the town centre. As I approached, my eyes and mouth grew wider and wider. The most magnificent ... read more

I had to endure the longest trip of my life: 18 whole hours on one train. Getting on the correct train and finding my bed was a challenge in itself. The train had to be at least half a mile long and the locals' ability to speak English seemed to disappear when I asked them. Finally I found my slab that was to be my home for three quarters of a day. Getting my head down was hard to come by too. I was far to concerned with my valuables being pinched that I remained awake for the first eight hours of the trip. Not only was sleep difficult, going to the the toliet was like a battle. Taking valuables inside a room where there was just a hole in the floor and trying to keep ... read more

The trip didn't get off to the best of starts. Even though Heathrow T5 is a very impressive building, it didn't stop me from being sick of the sight of it, by the time I left for India. This was due to my flight delay of nothing less than five hours. Since it was only the first obstruction along the way, I shrugged my shoulders and said c'est la vie. Finally, 6AM Indian time, I arrived in Delhi airport. My man was there to pick me up with his sign that said "Daniel Havees". He dropped me at my musty hotel where I could only get 4 hours sleep due to an early checkout time. Jetlagged, grouchy and just plain miserable. Time to get down and dirty. I had to find myself a hotel for the ... read more
