I passed a border once myself having a roll of cash that I might or might not be allowed to bring out of the country. I was told it was illegal to bring the local currency out of the country so I hid it at best I could. The customs officer looked through my entire bag. Every little thing I carried he opened and examined. The only place he missed was the little space where I hid the money. I can't remember how nervous I was. I don't think it would have been a problem but I don't know. By the way, I think Giant's Causeway is vertical too. It's just that you only see the top of the pillars there where as you here see more. /Ake
Stop the violence against women I have posted this in our 'Signs, Signs & more Signs' thread in the Photography Forum. The message is so dramatically portrayed. I have also posted some of your fabulous pics in the 'Streetscapes' thread. Check 'em out, Andrea.
Time and the art of returning 'Going back' is a dangerous game... but only if you have high expectations. I like your approach of living in the moment, because however hard we try we can never re-create a past happiness, but can certainly create a new/different happiness. I totally share your love of rum, and Brown Eye's love of papusas - especially when filled with cheese! :)
Ah... you and those brown eyes Beginning to think the two of you are a bit of a thing. Laughed at all the intrigued surrounding your fireworks. Glad the blast was enjoyed by all. Those dang millennials can learn how to travel from you! Loved women power. You always set the example. Never go backwards... keep the precious memory. Glad you caught your wave. You slapped time in the face for a moment. Travel on.
Thank you Binkleys! This has been fun reminiscing my last trip to Central America and I have loved seeing things that I missed the first time around. Added bonus making new memories with a good friend.
The more I thought about this blog, the more I found it fascinating. Especially interesting were the interactions you had with locals, and in particular when you visited the women's cooperative and you said you came to understand their tough but strong character. You revealed a lot about yourself too. Your blog is sharp and edgy and I felt as though I was reading a novel rather than a travel piece -- I really liked it!!
Hi Andrea, loved the blog as usual. You've certainly whet our appetites for El Salvador... Hoping it'll be our Central American India/Bolivia. The fireworks were inspired. Shame re the old haunt, but revisits way down the line nearly always disappoint. Intrigued as to your new country with "brown eyes". We dashed through Belize (which was a shame as it did have a great vibe, but was simply out of our budget) and arrived in Guatemala yesterday where we are already feeling at home. Continue to enjoy. All the best A&A.
Honduras Wow, what a visit! I love the variety of travel experiences you encountered in Honduras - Mayan ruins and jungle, Caribbean bliss, and the coffee picking... This will make me think somewhat over my next cup of Guatemalan. I'm glad you explained the slang meaning of this blog's title, I was wondering...!
Honduras - safe or not? I totally agree that buying fruit directly from the vendors is the best way. I can add to the benefits that your money is likely to benefit the local economy more than if you buy the fruits elsewhere. I have to ask you, is Honduras a safe place to visit? If it is dodgy, where can you go and what should be avoided? /Ake
Honduras, is it safe? That is the million dollar question isn't it. Right now our Canadian government has NO GO directive on its website for parts of Honduras. Its really hard to predict where the gang violence will occur. I didn't feel I was in danger but I do practice very safe travel and I am extremely vigilant. I change plans and listen to feedback on the daily. Making my way around Honduras by myself I didn't feel any more unsafe than other parts of the world. I think it's up to the individual's own comfort zone.
Wag the dog So sad for the people who are stuck in Mexico. Sadly, easy to take advantage of people who are poor and willing to try anything to help their families survive. Glad you found and enjoyed those rough edges. I will now appreciate my coffee oh so much more. Thanks for the education. Good luck in El Salvador.
Wag the Dog Yes, very sad. I don't know if I can completely believe the story the bartender told me, but the theme sounded awfully familiar. It sure makes you think about how manipulated everything is behind the scenes. I loved my coffee practicum, I now REALLY can appreciate that cup of Joe and all the people that helped make it.
Que Pedo A beautifully written tome that is enthralling and enlightening Andrea. Yet the insight into the migrant march is like peering into a crack in a wall and discovering the unexpected yet the whole scene is otherwise hidden from view. Poignant yet fascinating.
This Canadian girl's passion for travel comes from my adventurous parents. My brother and I spent most of our youth traveling all over North America in the family’s camper van, airplane, and boat - going as far west as the Hawaiian islands, as far north as Tuktoyaktuk, and as far south as Mexico doing lots of adventurous stuff...canoeing, surfing, fishing, camping, hiking, skiing, exploring, jellyfish poking...it was the best childhood ever!
That same adventurous spirit fueled my travel passion for over 30 years. I’ve been all over the shop. Now that I'm newly retired, I split my lif... full info
