Depacito Time indeed waits for no-one. Amazing comparison between 1979 and 2019, what a difference! Those months by the beach and the surf in the family camper van must hold so many wonderful memories for you ?
I couldn't resist a quick blog after I found that picture. Things have changed so drastically. It's depressing actually, but I can't do anything about it. My memories are keeping me going there for sure.
Costa Rica Wow, Costa Rica looks stunning! The monkey incident can't have been fun at the time, but I love the precision with which the monkey is checking through his potential spoils! I'm sorry to hear that you and your POBE had to part, I completely understand the soul-mate thing. Thank you for further inspiration to visit more of Central America ?
Things change - and not always to the better I know exactly what you are talking about when you say that things change and that you look back and sometimes think that there is something missing today. I can give several examples of places that have changed for the worse. But instead I am going to tell you about two places that changed for the better. I visited Bosnia in 1997. It was then a war torn country. I went back in 2010 and things were much better. I have posted a handful of before-and-after-pictures on two blogs from the 2010-visit. If you want to find them you have to scroll down until you come to summer 2010 to find them. /Ake
Yes, it can be hard, all this change. Wow! Bosnia would have been very sad in 1997. You bet I will be looking at your 2010 blog on it. I'm glad things have drastically improved for them..
Going back in time Wow, you are so fortunate to have seen Baja before the hoards of tourist. It is great taking a step back to those childhood memories. Evidently, you got your sense of adventure through genetics. Most parents back in the day would not have been making that trip. Priceless. Loved reading your old blog again. Thanks for adding it.
Mexico! Yay, great to hear you're off again soon - look forward to hopefully reading more of your fantastic travel blogs from there! No worries about the weather, I'm enjoying experiencing all four seasons in my week here!
Travel Indeed, travelling is rather more-ish! Funny you should ask, I am currently in your mother country of Canada! Having a lovely time here, visiting my family near Toronto. Just got back from a few days on the shores of Lake Huron. I plan to write up a blog entry on my time there, hopefully next week when I'm back home. Loving your country though, and the super-friendly people, eh!
So glad you are enjoying my country! It is pretty great. But Sorry eh, it’s still a little cold. Over here on the best side, Vancouver. It is warmer! Not quite enough though, I’m headed for Mexico tomorrow to warm up a bit.
Great picture It is sad when places you once visited and loved some years later has turned into something dreadful and unlovable. I have a couple of those myself and there are some places I don't know if I should revisit. I want to keep the memories as they are and don't want to spoil them. /Ake
Costa Rican sunsets are stunning and I've been told its because of the land positioning on the western coast. Oh and I find it hard not to compare previous trips, especially if the place was once pristine. I probably won't go back to Costa Rica again.
Trading sand for some snow Not a good time to leave Central America. It is still snowing up north. I'm glad you listened to Brown Eyes... he knows things. I'm glad to hear some good has come from the flood of American expats on this part of the world. I enjoyed Costa Rica and spent a most of our time in the Monteverde area but never feel in love. We enjoyed zip lines, horse back rides, and ethereal waters but seemed too commercialized. We absolutely enjoyed the bull fight but when we went the scuba diving was not good. I was laughing as I read about your battle with the monkey, knowing all too well he didn't have a chance. My heart breaks when you had to say goodbye for now.
Too commercialized, I agree. Very touristy. I'm sorry that the scuba diving was poor. Cocos island has spectacular diving apparently. Expensive though. I think I could be talked into go back for that. but overall, I probably won't return to Costa Rica.
Reminiscing Ah, it must have been thought-provoking and emotional to visit a former travel hangout again after time had moved on. I see myself doing the same at some point soon. Love the fireworks, and your border-crossing with them...! It seems like it was well worth it in the end ?
Re-reading your blog Andrea, I know I've read this blog in the past but can't figure out why I have not commented. We are thinking about a trip to Russia. I may have to email and ask you additional questions. The small villages sound intriguing. so many places to travel and so little time. For us, the people are always the heart of any trip we take.
I hope I was able to help. What ever you decide, your trip will be epic. Russia and Siberia remain on top of all the places I've visited. I was completely smitten by the culture, the people and the experiences. Siberia was a once in a lifetime experience!
This Canadian girl's passion for travel comes from my adventurous parents. My brother and I spent most of our youth traveling all over North America in the family’s camper van, airplane, and boat - going as far west as the Hawaiian islands, as far north as Tuktoyaktuk, and as far south as Mexico doing lots of adventurous stuff...canoeing, surfing, fishing, camping, hiking, skiing, exploring, jellyfish poking...it was the best childhood ever!
That same adventurous spirit fueled my travel passion for over 30 years. I’ve been all over the shop. Now that I'm newly retired, I split my lif... full info
