Europe June 12th 2015

Today started out docking at Gerlachshausen. From there, some of us took a bus to Rothenburg which was an hour and some away. We walked into this walled city and all of the sudden we went back in time. It was like nothing had changed since the medieval times. Okay some things have been modernized like sewers and sanitation, but it looked like a different world, like you read about in Shakespeare's stories or Chaucer's tales. During WWII only a small portion of this town was bombed so the majority never had to be rebuilt. So some of the sayings we use today came from those old times. Back in the day, animals such as dogs and cats and birds and rats and mice use to live in the ceiling area between the timbers and the ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Würzburg June 11th 2015

We went to Wurzburg today where we spent time at the Residenz which was the grand palace for the Prince-Bishop Balthasar Neumann. It was kind of a "I'll scratch your back if you scratch my back" way of being elevated to that level. The interior was extremely ornate with Baroque and Rococo embellishments, paintings, statues, décor and design. Now mind you, this palace was for one man since he was a bishop and was not to be married (although rumor has it there may have been children). Pictures were not allowed of the inside, but take my word, it was dazzling! More than 80% of the city was destroyed in WWII bombings. The town repaired the buildings to their original state and there was also significant damage to the Residenz. The taxpayers have paid for the ... read more

Europe » Germany » Baden-Württemberg » Wertheim June 10th 2015

We spent the day docked in Wertheim on the Main River. There was a glass blowing demonstration and then a tour in the cute little town of Wertheim, pronounced “Ver-time”. Then we had free time to roam around and do some shopping, soooooo, that’s what we did! I might have to get rid of some clothes that I brought so I can take home my new clothes; or maybe ship them home. We also went to a local home in a nearby village, pronounced “Willage”, and got to spend time with a lovely couple in their home. I swear, the folks over here are so historically knowledgeable. I just love listening to them, and their accents are fun too! Since I didn’t spend any time talking about the food, you’re probably wondering if they’re now starving ... read more

This morning we went to Heidelberg and to the Heidelberg Castle as well. The ruins are very cool although there was so much destruction due to wars and a fire that burned it. They have left those parts “as is” and kept them, as Harold our program director says, as romantic ruins. They now use the exterior courtyard for concerts and the interior is used for some town meetings and banquets. There are several myths and tales that go along with this castle, but the best part is, and this is no myth, that there are two giant kegs in the cellar that used to be pumped up to the main floor and deliver wine. The first keg was 180+ gallons of wine and the second one was 250+ gallons of wine as seen in the ... read more

Europe » Germany » Rhineland-Palatinate » Koblenz June 8th 2015

We started out in Koblenz and had a wonderful morning then it was “All aboard” and we sailed down the Rhine River to Rudesheim. The scenery was amazing!! Gorgeous towns, vineyards, churches and castles! We stayed on the sundeck and just saw one after the other. It was magical. I found the castle I want to buy and fix and flip. It’s perfect!! We arrived in Rudesheim and that’s where the fun began! We went to a beer garden for dinner and listened to an Umpapa band. There was dancing and singing, marching and drinking, shots and good food! Chandler and I stayed out on the town to experience the night life, except the town closes down at 10:00. We then stayed up on the boat so Chandler could serenade some of the boat staff with ... read more

Europe » Germany » North Rhine-Westphalia » Cologne June 7th 2015

We had somewhat of a leisure morning with a lecture on Germany and a class on the German language. Then there was a special champagne pre-lunch for the independent (non-attached) travelers so that we could meet other people to connect with. We sat at a table with a bunch of lovely and funny ladies. It was really fun! We docked in Cologne (Koln in German) in the afternoon and left right away for a tour and beer tasting. Kolsch beer to be exact. We started walking along the Rhine with a history lesson of which I would do an extremely poor job repeating. We then ended up at the great Cathedral in Cologne, Kolner Dom, with building starting in the 13th century. It is amazing! Both inside and out. It is believed to house some relics ... read more

Europe » Netherlands June 7th 2015

So far, I'm finding Amsterdam to be a pretty dirty city. The architecture is beautiful, but it's just a little bit different. The quaint is gone and replaced with a lot more crowds, cigarette butts everywhere, and not really that charming. One of the highlights of the trip was meeting two ex-prostitutes and talking to them. They are actually called sex-workers and they are legal, registered, and proud of what they do. They are 73 year old twins named Martina and Louisa. You'll see a picture of Mom and Mary Ann with them. They were very interesting and appeared to still be willing to make some money if anyone was interested. They were selling books (Meet the Fokkens) and souvenirs. They are also on public television sometimes, at least over her in Europe...very interesting. The food ... read more

Europe June 5th 2015

We had a fairly early departure this morning from lovely Bruges. On the way to Ghent, our program director, Laura Cross, provided us with tidbits of information about our travels. There are three different national languages spoken in Belgium. The first one is Flemish which is Dutch with a distinct accent. The next is French, which the Flemish don’t like too much and the last is German. That’s probably why I was confused much of the time! Also, Belgium is where French Fries originated. They used to eat tons of sardines, but when there became a shortage, the people needed something to eat. There was an abundance of potatoes and they were inexpensive so they cut them up in the shape of sardines and deep fried them. They are fried in oxen oil twice, although, they ... read more

I wonder if there is such thing as drinking too much beer!? Today was spent in Bruges getting to do all of the things we ran out of time for yesterday. And then of course to do things we got to do yesterday but were so much fun, that we thought we'd do them again, like drink beer. We spent time going to The Basilica of the Precious Blood from the 12th century where according to tradition, the 'Holy Blood" of Jesus was brought back from Jerusalem by Derrick the Alsace and entrusted to the city of Bruges in 1150. We also went in to The Church of Our Lady, where there are amazing pieces of work including the Madonna and Child sculpted by Michelangelo. We also hung out in De Burg where the Town Hall, ... read more

We started out with a city tour from a local tour guide and it was amazing! We then took a canal tour, had actual Belgium waffles (super delicious!) went for some beers, cheese croquettes, more beer, ice cream cones, and more beers! I LOVE it over here!! I had no idea how much Spanish influence there was over here. At least 200 years of Spanish rule. We saw the house (I should say palace) where the Spanish mayor lived who started the Inquisition. The Bishop used to live in one palace, but then had to move to another...probably wasn't big enough! He still lives there today. We saw the Wall of Beers where over 1000 beers are on shelves with their matching glass. They closed down just about when we got there, so only a couple ... read more
