I created this blog to provide details of my 2015 through hike of the Superior Hiking Trail. The trip lasted 26 days including 19 days hiking (265 miles), 4 days on a BWCA canoe trip and 3 days off trail playing tourist in Cook Co.

I am attempting another SHT through hike in Sept 2017. Differences this year include a more focused trip without the canoe trip and scheduled days off trail. I will be hiking the entire trail including the Duluth section (310 Miles).

This is a brief description of some of the gear I used and how it performed. Pack: GG Crown 60 – I bought this pack for one reason, because it is light, weighing only two lbs. It is also not that big which prevents me from stuffing in too many last minute items. It always seems if you have room you take along more stuff than you should. For this trip, I did buy a cap for it to store things like maps and the trail guide in to be able to access them without opening the main compartment. This pack doesn't have any secure external pockets. The pack functioned well even though I was carrying more than the recommended 30lb load. I was usually carrying between 35-40lbs. It could have a little longer shoulder strap ... read more

This is the second post about people I met on the trail. After a day on a section of trail that combined flat muddy sections with some rugged hilly terrain, I camped at Horseshoe Ridge. There was a tent set up there when I arrived. After I set up, Jon from Shakopee arrived from his day hike. He had hiked in the day before and was taking the opportunity to cover some miles without a heavy pack. We had dinner around the fire pit and I had gathered some wood for an evening fire. We sat around the cowboy tv and shared our outdoor travel stories. Jon had led a number of trips during his recent college years and had gained some valuable experience. He was currently working at a hospital and applying to med schools. ... read more

People I Met on the Trail The one thing I found out from the very first day of my hike is that you will meet some very interesting people along the trail. Everyone has a story of how they enjoy the SHT. Many are on a mission to hike the entire trail whether it’s a through hike or hiking it in smaller sections. The underlying theme is a love of the SHT, the North Shore of Lake Superior and northeastern Minnesota. Also when asked most people said they enjoyed the fall season the most with its spectacular colors, usually more temperate weather and the relative lack of bugs compared to other seasons. Below is a brief account of my interactions with people I met on the trail. I told most of the people I met that ... read more

10/10/15 Day 22 Hiking Day 16 The sound of a train horn woke me up early but I went back to sleep until 7:15am. It felt good to sleep in and I didn’t have to be on the trail early because I only had about five miles to get to Hwy 2 and the Reeves Road parking lot. It was an easy walk even though I had to traverse a wet snowmobile trail, which got my boots damp again. I met Maureen just before noon – it was good to see her again. She brought plenty of supplies and a cold beer, which didn’t last long. She also brought lunch and that along with the snack and beer I had already consumed made for a tired sleepy hike in the afternoon. With only 52 miles to ... read more

10/05/15 Day 17 Hiking Day 11 We were up early and had a good breakfast with coffee and tea. With an early start and taking the scenic County Highway 6, we were in Finland before 8am. I was back on the trail with a heavy pack and made good time on a level trail through a maple forest. I passed the biggest glacial erratic I’ve ever seen. It was at least 20ft tall. I put my hiking poles next to it for some scale. At a large beaver pond / meadow, there was a bench with trial log book where I stopped for a snack and left a note. I saw that Andy and Nels had left a note in this trail log. After the trail reaches Section 13 it become very hilly and rugged with ... read more

9/29/15 Day 11 Hiking Day 7 I was up before sun rise at Lake Agnes on a chilly, clear, calm morning. Watched the sun rise and the full moon was still in the western sky. A great start to the day. Packed up and said good bye to camp mates and hit the trail around 8:30am. Signed the trail log at Lake Agnes overlook and read others entries. Enjoyed the great views of the almost peak fall colors. Had a snack at West Poplar River camp and just after I got back on the trail I saw a male grouse trying to impress a couple of female grouse. Passed by Lutsen ski area access road and Poplar River bridge. Climbed huge hill – Moose Mountain – and had lunch on a flat rock on top in ... read more

This portion of my adventure was the BWCA trip. I typically go on a trip with some friends and my son each year during the last weekend in September. Its usually an easier trip that targets lake trout fishing and bird hunting. There is always lots of good food, laughs and stories from the years of BWCA and Quetico trips. I thought I would have to miss the trip due to the SHT hike but my son and friends were kind enough to offer to pick me up off the trail and drop me back where they found me after the canoe trip. It was also a chance for me to have them bring a food resupply for the next phase of my hike. It made for interesting conversations with other hikers I encountered. After telling ... read more

9/22/15 Day 4 Hiking Day 4 Woke up at Kimball Creek camp to another beautiful day. It was warm overnight and I slept until 7am. I’m starting to get in to a packing routine, which consists of packing clothes and sleeping stuff first thing when I get up. I then pack up the tent and load everything in the pack except food and cookware which go in last. After a breakfast of oatmeal and tea, the food is packed and its time to hit the trail. All this usually takes about 60 – 90 minutes. This stretch of SHT is really nice without the mud from yesterday. Great vistas of Lake Superior throughout a string of grassy meadows. Called Maureen from one of the meadows – it is good to hear her voice. I wish she ... read more

I am in the process of typing up my notes from my trip journal. They are organized by date, day of my trip and finally hiking day. I will be adding posts as I get the notes typed. This post has the first three days. 9/19/15 Day 1 Hiking Day 1 Stayed at Ella’s (VRBO) in Grand Marais after the Mountain Stage concert last night at North House Folk School. We packed and left by 8am, arriving at Otter Lake Road SHT parking lot around 10am. Maureen and I walked a little over a mile to the northern terminus of the SHT where it connects to the Border Route Hiking Trail. On a beautiful sunny day, we took pictures and signed the trail log book at a spot called 270 degree lookout. It was a beautiful ... read more

Its finally over! I made it home today at 2:30pm after hiking the last 16 miles. It was really nice to be able to walk home and not have to rely on a ride or drive myself. It was strange to walk with my pack on the familiar trails near my house. Usually I am hiking without a pack, biking or trail running on those trails. My thoughts as I was finishing the final miles was that the full hike was much harder than I thought it would be. When planning this trip, I thought I would be able to cover more miles in a day or not feel as sore or tired as I did at the end of each day. But I think that is the reality of many outdoor trips we plan. Overall, ... read more
