To many people in life fail to see the adventure in daily life, the love in a smile and the beauty in the day. With life in general we sometimes get to busy to see the simple things the lovely things in nature and the awe in the world. This trip brings to much of this at the same time to the forefront to even begin to describe, so a travel blog seems like a good thing to put into the world.

Everyone always plans for travel; where they will go, what they will do and how they will get there, but the thing you never think of (or I never thought of) was what happens when you come home. I returned to Canada nearly a year ago from a 7 month trip - see previous posts- yet it has taken this long to see how much it has altered my perspective on things. I am writing this post from my desk, in my post graduate school in St John's Newfoundland where I am writing my Masters degree on Children's Right to Play - a topic, by the way, that I decided on while travelling Thailand. (Impact one of travelling- picking a masters topic I had never even given a second thought too) While I watch the spring ... read more

Three months to the day since we left the last days of summer in BC to come around the world to some beautiful areas. We left Oamaru on the east coast of the south island with a new found friend and decided to finally camp our way in NZ. We hopped in the little black car and headed south, within an hour and a half we were in Dunedin looking at the town, crowds and enjoying some great food before pushing on towards invercargill on the Southern tip of NZ. Gregg had to stop just outside of Oamaru to drop off some wine from a vineyard that he worked at in Christchurch so we were granted the pleasure of meeting a great weaver and were told that Invercargill was once called the A**hole of the world. ... read more

Things from home seem so important at the time and when you leave you realize its not the things at home, its the people. The people who stand by you and wish you luck and send you love from around the world no matter what time of night are the ones you find you miss and wish could see what you are seeing. It is this thought that follows me throughout the trip of NZ and it is this thought that I continually had runing through my head as we made our way south from landing in Auckland, NZ to Wellington to sort out passports and then onto the south Island. It is without a doubt a beautiful country and yet the odd things are so similar to home its hard to explain to people. The ... read more

Waiting is never my strong point, but waiting for a train seems different. You sit in a train station and wait, but its not like waiting for someone to come over or for santa to come down the chimney when you are 8 years old; it;s strangely peaceful. It is watching fellow travellers with interest, wondering where they are going and thinking of what they must be up to just to pass the time. Or in this case its sitting outside Starbucks with your little travel companion of a computer to update your blog. Our Mad dash through Malaysia has sadly come to an end, as the train station I am waiting in is the end to Malaysia for us and we cross into Singapore in a little less than 5 hours. So here it goes. ... read more

correspondence 2: October 1 2009, Realization that this update is long in order I have dedicated this raining day to update the blog. In the last post we were only in Bangkok and Autyuata in the north and kata beach in the south just out of phuket, the party central zone of southern thailand it seems. We stayed in kata beach where we met a lot of people including Linus, the german psychology student, the 4 welsh boys, Rhodri, Paul, Matt and Gaz who we are now back near Surat thani with now. After Phuket we headed to the island Ko Phi Phi that was struck by the tsunami too and can the pictures, stories and horrors of the days can be seen throughout the town and the locals. Whether through reading of the stories in ... read more

september 16, 2009 The days have flown by and even though its only been less than a week since we left we've seen so much its hard to even start to write down. For the first two days we spent them in Bangkok where we were taken for rides by tuk- tuk drivers, stayed in seedy hotels and met lovely british ladies, but the city was overwhelming, dirty and smelly (like most major cities) so we took off north to Athuytya (I-U-TAYA) to see ruins from before the 17th century and a city built partly on an island where three rivers confluence. It was amazing, it had the chillness of the beach but the city in it too. It was a population of about 90,000. We stayed in a hostel that was like a tree house and had ... read more

Departing from Prince George, BC on the 10th was a long trek to get to Bankok but when we arrived we thought we were set to explore, except once we landed here on the 12th, gathered our gear and went thru customs and into the taxi line at the airport we realized we had no idea what we were getting into. We found our first hotel the "sawasadee smile inn" and expected a suitable place to rest only to walk into a small box of a room with one double bed and a shower that spread the toilet and had ants crawling in it. It was our home for the night so we pulled out our sleep sheets and decided to grab food and explore, well we made food and then decided to go for a ... read more

Days two and three were full of new sites, new experiences and some new scars. We set out west along the Carrier pack trail that leads along the Blackwater river upstream to trading posts throughout the region. The trail was in great condition and someone had come in and brushed it out, but as the day wore on and we started to have to swerve off the beaten path to re gain the trail fromblow down it started becoming obvious the trail was heading down hill in up keep fast. It seems amazing looking back that these trails that were such an important part of peoples lives would just be left to, perhaps not be forgotten but left to the ravishes of time. Time had started to take back the trail as the dead, blown over ... read more

Everyone loves adventure, everyone loves to take to the road and experience something new (or at least I like to think they do) and as such this is the introduction to our adventure down the Mackenzie trail. Sitting on the front steps one afternoon we were contemplating adventures to do once Jeremy was down field school and I was done work when a proposal came about for writing an article from a magazine seeing Jeremy's photos on flickr. When Jeremy brought it up it seemed like the perfect time to put forward my desire to take horses down the Alexander Mackenzie trail and camp along the way. While I would have loved to ride the whole 427 km trail it was not to be this trip. We decided on a short and sweet adventure around the ... read more
