Day 127-128 Although it was a great piece of quiet motorway from Volos to the Turkish border, it was a long slog, the major towns in this part of Greece are few and far between, its mainly agricultural with mountains in the distance. But on the 7th September we crossed the Turkish border our furthest country east. With a day to spare before we entered Istanbul, we decided to visit Galipolli. It was here in 1915, that Allied Forces tried to capture and secure the Dardenelles a narrow strip of water with the aim to march on Istanbul to take Turkey out of the war and start another front against Hungary. In the 1950’s nobody visited this sparse, but lovely piece of land that is now a National Park. Nowadays many people come to visit the ... read more

After our island hopping, we arrived back to the mainland at Rafina, just north of Athens and drove firstly to Marathon and then on to Volos. In the tradition of checking out film locations we decided to make a quick divert to the island of Skopelos, one of the Sporades islands made famous by the filming of Mamma Mia. We left the Bongo in a campsite (there are no campsites on the island and car ferries are few) and headed off on the hydrofoil, which was fast but scary especially when it went round tight corners. We were met at the port by a lovely Greek lady called Evelina, who offered us a room in her house. I was suspicious but had no need to be, the room was lovely and the house right in the ... read more

At home we have a book called 100 places to see before you die. Lots of the places mentioned in this book are far flung around the world, like to Cook, or Galapagos Islands. One of the more do-able locations was Santorini, which is 3 hr ferry ride north of Crete. Santorini was once a huge volcanic island when an immense eruption blew a hole in the middle around 1450 BC. It is thought, that this could be a possible site for the lost city of Atlantis. Today, Santorini is a stunning Island with white villages, clinging to the cliff edges. Although touristy, with many cruise ships, backpackers, and couples searching for that romantic place. The villages and the views - particularly at sunset, are a must see. It was here at one of the restaurants ... read more

We had planned our itinerary to include a 10 day break in Crete to meet up with Megan and her friend. Unfortunately for various reasons Meg was unable to join us, naturally we were very disappointed. However, we decided to make use of the apartments booked in two locations, Gournes in the North East and Rethymno in the North west . Crete was surprisingly cooler than the main land with an ‘unusually high wind’... according to the holiday rep. (We later found that the wind here is quite common in August, known as the Meltemi). It was the first ‘weather’ we had encountered for several months, and we had a balcony overlooking the sea in our first apartment, which was just great for watching the waves and sunsets. Our routine of sightseeing included Knossos Palace- a ... read more

In 1963 the most popular film in British Cinemas was ‘Summer Holiday’ the story where a group of young people take a converted bus to Athens. I don’t know if I was emotionally or psychologically damaged by watching the film at the Roxy Cinema in Blackheath, but since my early 20’s I have wanted to drive to Greece. Spookily here I am driving a converted vehicle, albeit a lot longer route than Cliff did it, into Athens. Although I would have liked to say we arrived in style, alas no, Alison who had done a sterling job navigating us through, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, Macedonia and the best part of Greece (Tom Tom’s coverage ended once into Croatia) was overwhelmed by the Athens road system when trying to look for the campsite. Twenty quid of petrol and ... read more

Every now and again we have clear out, where we strip everything out clean and repack. After a while things get misplaced and it helps have a reorganise, as we have gained things along the way, the lounger for instance. It has been pointed out to us on occasion ‘have we won the lottery’ . Sadly no, although travelling this distance seems extravagant we are working to a budget. Our largest expense is Diesel and accommodation. Diesel we can’t get around the costs. Most expensive? Switzerland and Albania cheapest so far, Montenegro. As for accomodation – We had budgeted for between £25=30 for camping per night. While travelling in Austria several people said ‘have you got your ACSI card?’ Well we hadn’t but promptly had one sent out to our next destination in Switzerland. This is ... read more

After a brief divert to Parta, one of the larger towns in the Peloponnese, to buy a new camera. We stayed at a campsite near the colossal Rio-Antirrus Bridge, The World's longest multi-span cable-stayed bridge that crosses the Gulf of Corinth. It was a brief stay as our next port of call was to be Olympia, home to the famous games of antiquity, and inspiration for the modern Olympics (it is here where the Olympic flame starts its journey). The Games started in 776BC until 394AD where Athletes from all over Greece, later to include Romans, would compete, in the nude, over 5 days. Although we can only wander through ruins now, you certainly get a feeling of what things were like 2500 years ago. Next stop was another important site, Delphi. Again this site started ... read more

So fortuitous to have good friends that book their holidays along our route! Just a few days before they flew out Cally (one of my oldest friends) emailed to see if we were going to be anywhere near. A quick divert in the itinerary and we were off to Parga. Its a lovely old fishing village, a harbour with shops and houses set against the hillside. The next bay is a lovely beach, Voltas where we found a campsite, and surprise surprise we were right next to Cally and her partner Chris’s hotel. We spent a lovely few days being totally spoilt. We explored Parga using a little ferry boat service from one bay to the other, stopping frequently for sustenance and ice creams, culminating in a lovely meal overlooking Parga harbour. Cally is rather partial ... read more

I have got one word to describe Meteora-Fantastic! Before the trip to Greece we hadn’t heard of Meteora, the Acropolis, yes, Olympia, Santorini certainly. It wasn’t though until we started researching, that Meteora kept cropping up in the tourist guide and in the top 5 places to visit in Greece. These are a group of magnificent 14th century monasteries perched on top enormous rock formations, and are still used today. One of these Agia Trias was used in the James Bond film For Your Eyes Only. Originally the only way for monks to get to them is by rope ladder, these days there are steps. Some of the larger more accessible monasteries attract many tour coaches. At one called Metamorphosis which had a single approach road with a steep drop one side. There was just about ... read more

Yes I know, I had to look up on the map where it is too!...east of Albania and North of Greece. It’s a small country, with a population of only 2 million. So why did we head there? Well the roads heading south in Albania were reportedly worse than the ones we had already experienced! Hard to believe! We thought it would be good to visit a new country and had heard that Lake Ohrid was nice, so we went to find out. No problems at the border, only they did not have electricity at the time and had to log all comings and goings manually which took time. We also got stung for 50 Euros for the car insurance. We eventually found a campsite 15 km from Ohrid town alongside the lake. They had recently ... read more
