Ok so I was dreading the next part of the journey, having decided we wanted to see some of Malaysia the question was how to travel. As you know our main plan was to take a train wherever possible, but to train it meant going backwards to Surat Thani (you remember that awful 3 bus, 5 hour bus ride!), and I’m not for travelling backwards! So we needed a bus, and we knew it was going to take about 8-10 hours. Our mantra became, let’s just ‘suck it up’ and try and enjoy the scenery. What a pleasant surprise, yes we were taken to a bus station, where we were duly labelled (stickers) with ‘Penang’, and where we met up with about 12 others also labelled with the same destination. A 5 hour drive in a ... read more

DI-SAS-TER….. the Lonely Planet Guide for south east Asia was left on the bus, Alison is bereft, it was like having her right arm cut off. After our train travels with cockroaches we were a bit apprehensive about the next, an overnight trip from Bangkok to Surat Thani, then meeting a bus to take us to Khoa Lak, a resort north of Phuket. The train although not new, was clean enough and shortly after leaving the station, the immaculately uniformed carriage attendant (starched creases and all) came through the carriage, assembled and made the beds, and attached the privacy curtains. It was a pretty cosy and we had a good sleep passing through the Thai country side. We had bought a joint train/bus ticket and was told the bus would meet us at the station for ... read more

Best laid plans and all that… we were back on a train on the 8.50 from Chiang Mai to Bangkok, it was a 11-hour journey but we thought it would great to take in the scenery. Problem number one - the seat we were assigned. The window seals had blown leaving it misted so couldn’t see out, we did move and for 3 hrs we had wonderful views of mountainous jungle scenery until the train filled up and we were directed back to our seats by the inspector. Then 2 hours before Bangkok as night fell, out of a crevice two cockroaches played hide and seek. Alison did her usual trick of attacking said creepy crawly, missing, which sends them scuttling in my direction! Bangkok is hot!, the temperature is oppressive, but pleased we booked a ... read more

On our original plan we weren’t sure whether we would go to Chang Mai. The easy route would be to go to Bangkok and either fly or train. It was due north and we needed to head south towards Singapore. Two things forced our hand one was if we flew into Thailand we got a 30 days’ visa as opposed to a 15 days one, the other was that Alison wanted to see some elephants. There wasn’t a direct flight so we took two Air Asia flights, the first a short hop to Bangkok then an hour north to Chang Mai. This city is known for three things temples, elephants and cuisine. We were going to experience all three during the next 3 days. On coming out of the airport the first thing we noticed was ... read more

You’d think we would have stayed away from long bus journeys after our last experience, but our journey on the Mekong Express to Phnom Penh was a much better experience. Our bus host provide us with water, a nice breakfast box, with a fresh wipe. He also helped with immigration and visas at the Cambodian border. With this and the nice change of scenery away from the endless open front buildings of Vietnam it was a great welcome to the country. At the bus station we had our first experience of riding in a tuk tuk, a four seater carriage towed behind a motorcycle, a small one at that. Mark, our Phnom Penh tuk tuk driver offered to take us around the city for the day showing us all the key landmarks. We are wary of ... read more

It’s only 4 weeks since we were freezing our wotsit’s off in Outer Mongolia, today in Saigon we are sweltering in the mid 90’s F, even got our shorts on! Boy, did we make a mistake getting here? As we'd had a good experience getting the night bus to Hoi An, we thought we would give it another go. Armed with a couple of books and a downloaded film, we took the 22-hour bus ride from Hoi An to Saigon. First thing was that the bus wasn’t up to the previous standard with broken and ripped seats. We worried also there was no emergency exit and all the emergency hammers for breaking windows for evacuation were missing. We were delayed while 5 motorcycles were dismantled for carriage with luggage below. The more we neared Saigon the ... read more

The overnight train was quite eventful as voyeurs, we were in a seat as they had sold out of sleeper bunks. Firstly, there was an announcement about the great Vietnamese railway (in English), at least 3 trolleys of food went up and down and then they started showing a Smurf film! People had lots of luggage all over the carriage, and they slept everywhere including the aisle which was difficult to negotiate at 5.30am when the train pulled into our stop. A cab was there to meet us to take us to our very grandly named hotel Mountain View, which all I can say did have a mountain view, and a very friendly landlady, and a room. Maybe it was the early hour, or lack of sleep, but we were quite stunned on arrival and took ... read more

We arrive at the very warm welcoming Rendezvous hotel in the Old Quarter in Hanoi. Nearly every shop front, hotel or business seems to be the width of a lock up garage. Even the width of our hotel room is the width of the hotel. We decided to put any ideas of what we will do in Hanoi until after we have had a good kip. Stepping out of our hotel, or anywhere in central Hanoi is like stepping out into a Hurricane, in this case a hurricane of Hondas, Suzuki, Yamahas, Vespa’s or any small cc’ed motorcycle transport you can think of. It’s easy to chuckle to see from our extremely regulated traffic, to the seemingly chaotic non regulated driving system here, especially when you see people riding 3 or 4 on a bike, all ... read more

The tour guide in Beijing said that ‘Beijing is China today; Shanghai is China - future!’ within moments of arriving I see what she means. We arrived at modern Shanghai Honqiao station and within minutes we were heading towards the centre on the busiest subway system in the world. Our destination for the next five nights, was to be a hotel near Peoples Square, as we would later find out, very convenient for exploring Shanghai. We thought we had booked a hostel, but had been previously bought and renovated by a big chain. The first words from the receptionist was that our room was in use, our tired bodies slumped, ‘so we have upgraded you’, yes-result! It turned out to be a very nice suite which done us well for our time here. With large cities ... read more

Before setting off for the heady heights of Shanghai our next stop is the beautiful town of Hangzhou, reportedly enjoyed as a holiday retreat by Emperors long gone. But first to tell of our new year on the train. The negotiation of the station was easy, having our own waiting area for the train, and on the platform the attendants were all smartly lined up alongside each carriage. We had magnificent peace and quiet, being the only passengers in the carriage let alone our compartment, after the noise and hustle of Xian it was a treat. Dozing in the compartment, which was the plushest of the trains so far, we saw many red lanterns and occasionally fireworks and that was it. Party poopers or not I enjoyed the peace! And so to Hangzhou. The scenery had ... read more
