Travelling back into Spain, although I bemoaned that Portugal did not say ‘hello’ when we drove in it certainly said goodbye and thank you for visiting! We’d loved our travels there. Seville was next on our agenda, we were rather dubious because of the heat, but it was less than 2 hours driving, and right on our route so we dived in. At times our travelling may seem glamourous with all the sights we are so fortunate to see, but travelling by camper is certainly tricky when visiting cities. We’d found a safe secure parking place with good bus access to the city...fab! downside was it was basically a warehouse. We were persuaded to camp inside due to severe heat, but boy was it hot in there! Not wanting to sit in a car park, we ... read more

Its always exciting when driving off to new location. Leaving Lisbon it was extra exciting as we would be driving over the Vasco de Gama bridge, 7.6miles long with 2 elevated sections for vessels to pass under. Later we would meet a Portuguese man, (who incidentally works and lives in Luton, who said when it opened in 1998 15,000 people had a street party on it, with tables joined end to end over the whole length of the bridge! It was time again for a bit R+R again. So we headed for a campsite inland that was situated on the edge of a reservoir and was as close to nature as you could get. The receptionist said you could pick your own spot as long as you are 10 metres apart. Well, we could have had ... read more

Arriving in Lisbon, the cicadas are singling merrily indicating it’s getting hotter! and we are looking forward to a dip in the beautiful campsite pool. However, relaxing at the campsite was a challenge, there are hoards of children, primary school aged, seemingly in summer schools, identified by different coloured hats. They are everywhere, including over 100 in our campsite pool! Tram 28 featured highly in the guidebook and social media as the ‘best way to experience Lisbon’. We arrived via bus from our campsite, duly bought our public transport tickets and headed to the recommended start of the tram route, only to find over 100 people queuing! The trams are delightful vintage stock, but they only take around 20-30 people at a time and run every 15-20 mins. Plan B -walk the tram route, its only ... read more

We leave our perfectly located, but postage sized car park late in the afternoon intended to park around the bay, in Canidelo, but it is a popular resort and the two campsites were full. We headed south for 30 minutes to the Municipal Campsite at Espinho, another average looking campsite, at least it had a pool. The campsite was a poor reflection of the town of Esphino. It had a wide modern promenade with many cafes. For the sporty people, a sign that displayed the towns name - was also a climbing wall. There were many beach volleyball courts and a large open air swimming pool, with 3 high diving boards that look like 3, 5,and eight metres. I’ve dived of high boards but what scared the bejesus out of me, was from the 5mtr to ... read more

Our first sight of Porto was early evening, bustling crowds crossing Ponte Luis (bridge) on two levels, alongside cars and trams, and a funicular railway lifted you to further heights, whilst cable cars traversed the Vila Nova de Gaia bank. Colourful houses piled high above each other, intertwined by cobbled streets. It was delightful. Music came from all directions, the bars and many street entertainers, soft, sultry, jazzy sounds, and not a bad voice to be heard. In the evening the crowds gather across the river to watch the sun going down, quite an event, there must have been several hundred people on a hill, listening to music and applauding the sunset. Our campsite for the night was certainly not so romantic, a tiny car park. We got in with the help of a guy named ... read more

Travelling through Europe it always amazes me how many songs I hear in English whether it be on the radio, buskers playing in the street or piped through the supermarket. On our camper’s radio we’re listening to Radio Comrcial a mixture of modern English music dotted with some Portuguese and international songs. We’re heading for Vila Real just for a stopover. I’ve mentioned before, you always have high hopes that the campsite will have wonderful amenities, or perhaps a lovely view. This had neither, but once settling in we make do and get used to what we have. Down the hill from the campsite across the river there was loud music and a commentator speaking through a PA system - we decided to investigate. So going down many steep steps and crossing the river there was ... read more

Europe » Portugal » Northern » Viana do Castelo July 7th 2023

We arrived in Portugal, without any fanfare, no passport control and not even a sign saying ‘welcome to Portugal’, but there was a warm welcome at our campsite. With a short walk over the dunes to a fabulous, very windy beach we were astounded by the number of kite and wind surfers in the water, the colours, the tricks and criss-crossing it was incredible they didn’t get knotted together! We had inadvertently chosen a kite surfer’s paradise, Praia do Cabedelo. A short hop on a ferry from our beach location and we were in the bustling town of Viana do Castelo. A medieval centre with lots of small shops and restaurants, houses and other buildings are decorated with some beautiful tiles. Just behind the station is a 100 year old funicular railway that takes you up ... read more

Santiago de Compostela When we got off the ferry, we had no idea what specific direction we would go. We knew we were going through Spain, Portugal and France, had a couple of firm destinations like Seville and Granada in our minds, but hadn’t a route or had anything else in our minds. After staying in the Picos and having bit of time to study the maps and guidebooks. It seemed the next destination must be Santiago de Compostela, in the Northwest of Spain. Since the 9th Century pilgrims have been travelling many miles to visit the shrine of the Apostle St James, where tradition holds that the remains of the apostle are buried. There are several routes including from France, Portugal and from within Spain itself, with the French Way, or Camino Frances, being the ... read more

1. Picos de Europa When Spanish mariners returned from their early voyages to the Americas, the first sight of land they had from far out to sea was that of the giant mountain summits just behind the northern Spanish coastline of Asturias & Cantabria. They called them ‘Picos de Europa’, and in 1918 became Spain’s first National Park. We were naturally drawn to these mountains, although there was also some anxiety about driving ‘Django’, our new to us, but rather bigger than our previous camper, through the mountain passes. However, we had our trusty guidebooks, and even a ‘Back roads of Spain’ driving tour, what could possibly go wrong? The gateway to the mountains from the East is Potes our first stop, and a visit to a fantastic information centre. The pictures show some of the ... read more

Best laid plans and all that. After a busy week packing up the house we finally set off on our travels. A 10-week tour of Spain and Portugal returning through France. But first a few days in Cumbria to see family before catching the Plymouth-Santander Ferry. It should have then been simple a straightforward drive down the M6 and M5, a stop near Totnes in Devon then a short hop before embarking. Just south of Birmingham I arranged, albeit late some breakdown and personal insurance. At the end of the conversation the very nice lady run through a checklist of thing we should have Ehic card, (tick) insurance (tick) driving licence (tick) Logbook (aaaagh) I checked we had it but in the rush to pack up it was still in the folder back in storage. Dilemma? ... read more
