Black sand and crashing waves
We always like it when we end up in an unexpectedly nice place. Sometimes not planning provides a treat. Go with the flow. On to more islands.

Perspectives changes
Going off the beaten path and back to luxury changes your impressions. Always interesting when this happens.

Enjoying your travel ramblings
You've really gone off the beaten path this year and experienced some raw adventures. These experiences always make you realize how strong you are and open your mind in new ways. Life under the stars... could be worse.

Loggerhead Turtle
Amazing creatures. This event alone made your trip worth while. Nature at its finest.

Indeed, I couldn't agree more - I do believe it was the highlight of my trip. It was very emotional, almost spiritual, and very nearly moved me to tears...

West African Summary
A challenging trip provides growth and accomplishment. Hopefully you will check out Shane's trip to Tajikistan for next year. An epic road trip. Is it always nice when returning from these trips not to have people coming at you begging. Sounds like you encountered a few harsh attitudes. Great stories, thanks for sharing.

Summary
Thanks for this, and for all your encouraging comments :) I'm looking forward to reading about the epic road trip you took with Shane :) Thanks very much for reading my blog - I imagine you are also (or nearly) at the stage of post-trip reflection - definitely an important time for any trip I think.

Senegal
We've never given Senegal much thought but your recent trip has us asking questions. We will continue to read along and do some research. You never know where we may end up.

Senegal
Sure, please also feel free to ask any questions if you like :) Although a challenging place to travel, I do still think it was comparatively easier to travel there than most other places in West Africa - so still a good option to dip one's toes into the region perhaps. Now I'm back and have more time, not travelling any more, I'm looking forward to properly reading about your adventures in Central Asia - the photos look amazing!! :D

I'm glad you visited West Africa...
and not me. Reading about it was enough for me. Give me Asia any time.

Asia
Lol, I understand! My motto for the trip: West Africa is a place more to be experienced than enjoyed! I'm already looking forward to an Asia trip next summer :)

Turtles and Whales
I've watched turtles lay eggs and I've seen them hatch. It's an indescribable experience. Very spiritual. At home in Hawaii, we are blessed to be the winter migration destination for humpbacks. I love hanging out at vantage points looking out for spouts.

Spiritual
Indeed, I have to agree with you on the spiritual experience. I have never seen turtle on a beach like that, there is something very special about it. It must have been wonderful to also see the egg laying and hatching. Hawaii must be a wonderful place to live :)

I really enjoyed reading your blog! Last year, Santiago was my vacation spot too. I had so much fun... Enjoy the "morabeza" of my people.

Me and Tiago

I have a serious question...
Hey Alex, how do you keep your white clothes so clean when you are in the road? I daren't travel with white clothes...

Good point!
Hey, good point! I was just thinking that yesterday when one of my white t-shirts ended up a dusty yellow colour. I pack a lot of white t-shirts, so I guess in time they'll get less and less white till I get home and use my Vanish white on them!

Photo shoot The Gambia
We often struggle where to publish a blog from when we've been to more than one location. Your logic is sound. We should write a blog about all the characters that have been trusted to drive us in amazing countries around the world .... now that would be a colorful blog. Your motorcycle ride sounded interesting. This trip sounds memorable and off the beaten path...just what you were looking for. Toxic travelers are to be avoided at all cost (even if you have to lie) Life is too short to put up with that and it is your trip. What a great trip up the river to enjoy the wildlife.

Drivers and Toxic Travellers
Thank you Merry, lovely encouragement to read as I travel. I love the point about the people entrusted to take us on our journeys, these are indeed special people :) And thanks also for the comment on "Toxic Travellers" - an excellent word for them! I'm looking forward very much to reading your blog and seeing photos from your upcoming trip to Central Asia!! All the best with the packing and preparation :D
