We woke up a bit later this morning and had our breakfast in the hotel. We had to pack up our bags for transfer to the train station later. With nothing planned for today, and a 3pm departure, we were in no hurry, so we just went out strolling. At Assi Ghat, we watched the yoga class for a bit, since two of our ladies were participating. I’ve circled them in the photo. What we saw was not what we thought of as normal yoga, in that many of the folks were sitting in chairs pretty much the whole time. I think a lot of it had to do with breathing and … enlightenment. After watching the yoga class, we strolled around a bit, then headed back to the hotel. Our bags would be brought down ... read more

We woke up after a good night’s sleep and went down to meet our guide for our included sunrise boatr ride. The boat trip last night wasn’t included, but was only something like 300 Rupees extra, so just about everyone went. We strolled down to Assi Ghat again and saw the sunrise ritual taking place at Assi Ghat as we climbed into our boat, this time motorized. The main sunrise ritual was being held at Dashashwamedh Ghat, so we headed that way, stopping briefly to observe the sun rise and take photos. It is supposed to be good luck to be on the Ganges when the sun rises. We then arrived at Dashashwamedh Ghat and observed their ritual for a bit before returning to Assi Ghat. After another good breakfast in the hotel, the five of ... read more

Well, we both ended up getting about 4 or 5 hours of sleep. We woke when it was still dark and hardly anyone else on the train was up and about. Soon enough, everyone started to stir, except the two ladies staying near us. Apparently, at least one of them had taken some sleep aid! We watched from the bathroom area as people came and went, using the bathroom and brushing their teeth. One guy must have spent 30 minutes brushing his teeth, rinsing his mouth, and hacking. By this time it was light outside, so I could watch the countryside near Varanasi as it went by, sipping the chay I bought from a train vendor. When the train pulled into the station at Varanasi, we eventually got our gear together, having to deal with lots ... read more

Asia » India » National Capital Territory » Delhi April 13th 2016

Our tour started today around 8am, with a walk to the metro station to make the trip to Old Delhi. The metro was like most large cities, but rather neat and clean compared to the rest of Delhi. We were each giving a metro card to use (and return to the guide afterwards) for our trips today. One thing this is different about the Delhi metro is that all trains have 1 or more “women only” cars, usually in the front of the train. Some women did choose to ride in the other cars, but only women in these. My wife said they were usually just as crowded, standing together tightly packed like sardines. The men’s cars were always like that. You learn quickly that you can’t be polite, just push your way on and off. ... read more

After all the hours of travel, and general lack of sleep, we only slept a few hours our first night in Delhi and we awake before 6am. We decided to go up to the terrace to take some sunrise photos and wait for our breakfast. The hotel’s terrace is quite extensive for such a small building, with a large mish-mash of decorations, many of them quite neat. By sunrise there were a large number of large black birds circling and sweeping down all around us. Some of the bigger ones had wingspans of 3 feet or more! Around 6:30 or so, we ordered our breakfast. We both got an Indian breakfast, mine large and Manoli’s small. The breakfast consisted of juice, coffee/chai, three types of bread (one with a delicious filling), a bowl of soup or ... read more

Well, we finally made it to Delhi, India. It may be exotic, but it is also a long ways away, even by plane. Everything went well, as far as connections. The first flight, from Pensacola to Houston took around two hours, in a rather small United jet with about 18 rows of 4-wide seats. Houston International is a pretty big airport, with lots of choices for food and such. Since it was lunch time when we arrived, and I’d already found out that the 4 or 5 hour flight to Newark didn’t serve an y meals, we decided to eat lunch in Houston, a t the Panda Express. We split a 3-entrée, 1-side “big plate” for about $9. We had Honey Walnut Shrimp, Mushroom Chicken and Broccoli Beef for the entrees and mixed vegetables for the ... read more

Well, here we are again, starting another great (I hope) vacation. This year we are taking an 11-day tour in India with Intrepid Travel. We leave Pensacola Sunday morning (actually, I am writing this at the airport), with our first leg to Houston. Next, we fly to Newark International for our final flight to New Delhi. This is going to be a real experience before we even get to India, since the flight from Newark leaves at 8:30pm Sunday and doesn’t arrive in New Delhi until 9:30pm Monday. Yep, 25 hours! 11 hours of time zone changes and a grueling 14 hour flight. I’ll let you know in my next post how it went, but I am prepared, I think, having bought a rather expensive travel pillow so I can hopefully sleep a good part of ... read more

Thoughts on countries so far: Scotland - Cold, windy, beautifully! Drive on the wrong side. People are friendly. Galic is weird! Really like Irn Bru soda! Neil, our guide rocks! Germany - Warmer, but windy on the Rhine. Enchanting towns. Everyone rides bicycles. Inexpensive for a tourist area. Dogs are everywhere... even restaurants, stores, and train stations! Luxembourg - It may be the country with the highest income per capita in the world, but they don't keep their streets and public places very clean! Spend some money on public maintenance! Clothing... women's at least, is expensive! Lower Luxembourg City (Base?) is quite pretty. Brussels - Very diverse in people and buildings. A lot of historical places. European Capital, and buildings to show for it. Never seen so many Kebap or Doner meat restaurants. Waffles are grrrreat! ... read more
